Founded on Staten Island all the way back in 1830 as the city's first "poor farm,", this old, historic facility was yesterday's solution to the homeless, located deep in the heart of present-day New York City. The site continued to evolve and grow with time, and the Sea View Hospital, initially built between 1905 and 1930 and originally intended to handle and house the city's growing tuberculosis-suffering population, was built directly adjacent to the poor farm. The two sites were officially merged in 1915, at which time the combined facility was renamed "Seaview Farms." The site would continue to function in carrying capacities and in fluctuating, gradually diminishing population levels all the way up until 1975. What all transpired at the poor farm? How did it typify yesterday's solution to the homeless? What can we learn from its rich history toward possibly improving upon our own efforts today? What is the old historic facility's current status? And still located deep in the heart of present-day New York City, what does its future now look like today?
