In June 1995 the Queen granted a Royal Charter to St Davids in Pembrokeshire. St Davids has for centuries been deemed a City because of the presence of the glorious 12th Century Cathedral, dedicated to Wales' Patron Saint, but local government 'reforms' in the 1970s had rendered the legal position unclear.
St Davids Cathedral is unique in having the Sovereign as a member of the Cathedral Chapter and the Sovereign has a personal Stall in the Choir, alongside those of the Dean and Chapter. The Dean, and later Bishop J Wyn Evans welcomes the Monarch along with other distinguished guests, whist the whole community gathers to welcome the Queen and Prince Philip to the City.
This video, introduced by Lord Gordon Parry, from 1995, chronicles the events of the day, the Grant of the Charter, the Service in the Cathedral and the City's celebrations.
