I hike the Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State Park near Yarnell, Arizona.
It memorializes the nineteen members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots who died there on June 30, 2013, while fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire.
I wasn't exactly sure what kind of video this would turn out to be. It is a somber and arduous hike. I did my best to take you along on the memorial trail. This video is designed for those who cannot make the hike. I tried to take time at each plaque, take in the view and reflect on life. I hope the video reflects that. I am also fascinated at documenting the things people leave behind as their remembrance of their moment here. I left something. At the wall above. They request that you do not bring down items to the memorial.
Hotshots Trail - This 2.85-mile trail climbs up 1,200 feet. Along the trail to the site are 19 granite memorial plaques, each with a photo of a hotshot and a short biography. There are also memorial benches along the trail. The trail first reaches an observation deck 400 feet above the memorial.
The Journey trail: The portion of the trail from the observation deck down to the memorial circle is 0.75 miles away from the observation deck. It is a reference to the hotshots' final journey. The memorial is made of 19 rock baskets or gabions connected by chains forming a circle around the fatality site. It is surrounded by a pathway and includes a flagpole
The memorial plaques are embedded into rock formations along the trail, one approximately every 600 feet (180 m) and are arranged in order of the seniority of the crew.[6] The trail starts at an elevation of 4,318 feet (1,316 m) and climbs to 5,460 feet (1,660 m) at the observation deck. It is steep and rugged with over 200 steps carved into rock and several switchbacks.[6]
On June 28th, 2013, a fire broke out as a result of a lightning strike in the Weaver Mountains near Yarnell. A team of Hotshots was deployed to battle the fast-moving fire, which grew from 50 to 500 acres over the first night. Sadly, winds shifted on June 30th, and the Hotshots were trapped in the middle of the fire. Two years later in 2015, Arizona State Parks and Trails purchased 320-acres of land where the fire occurred in dedication to the 19 fallen Hotshots and became Arizona's first memorial state park opening November 30, 2026. The park is located off of Highway 89, which most recently was officially named the Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State Highway.
DRONE VIDEO: I could not find the AUTHORIZED drone video of the park. Arizona State Parks does not allow drone footage. Ranger Welsh had mentioned there was one video that they did promote to show, but I could not find the authorized video. there are a handful of other "illegal" videos, that you can find if you look. I do not want to promote that so I did not attach in end production.
