Completely agree. I put Douma up there as someone who has been most enlightening for how I think about Tesla, technology, machine learning, and more - high praise considering I watch Tesla Daily, daily! I am always impressed at how good a job he does of bringing things down to first principles or at least a constructable model and deriving valuable insights from that. It translates far beyond his machine learning area of expertise; this interview is a perfect example. Just the last 10 minutes of Douma discussing investing is some of the better content I've ever seen on investing. Thank you James - we appreciate you sharing your insights with us via Dave!

I came here to find out what James had to say about the FSD CNBS sham journalism video and instead found a perfectly articulated example and reasoning why I gave up on MSM being a good source of information over two decades ago and why I never liked "the news". The best thing that has happened (and I know it isn't perfect but what is?) is alternative media sources like KZitem that we can use via the internet. I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't found websites as well, that wanted to bring INFORMATION AND FACTS to me about the things I was interested in and passionate about like the environment; technology and science as well as societal issues. First it was websites that only covered these topics and relied on funding from different non traditional sources that were not part of the "system" and also donations from readers or writes who cared enough to work pro bono to get the word out and did it with passion and a high level of journalistic integrity. The signal to noise ratio... I've been using that for a very long time and it can be applied not just to sources for information but also people around you who also want your attention but might not be where you should be giving your energy.

47:13 Found this VERY insightful. How trying to convince other people can harm you: "We all have bias. One way to make your bias much more extreme is to get in an argument with somebody else. If you have position A, and the other person has position B, and you're trying to be open-minded about A because you know you might be wrong, if you get into one of these adversarial contests where you're trying to convince the person .. it's gonna be harder to be neutral .. if you put yourself through the exercise of trying to force your opinion on other people."

James has a very good point. Don’t listen to or pay any attention to the FUD. Just tune it out, turn it off. Don’t let them influence your thinking with bad data. Its not worth the effort to convince them they are wrong anyway. Time will tell who is right. In time FSD will happen 100% guaranteed. But the timing on when it happens is unknown and just speculation. And in some respects it does not even matter. Whether it’s next year or 5 years from now. Does it really matter?

This reminds me: when you do the interview with Elon, please condider asking him upfront to try and not dumb down or simplify anything. Stuff might go over our heads, but I'm sure we have experts in all the relevant fields to be able to break that down later on for everybody to understand, with a much greater level of detail. This also saves time for more questions. The downside is that maybe if stuff goes over the interviewers' heads there won't be many follow-up questions. AI originally solved Checkers, then Chess, then GO. At the time , people were skeptical AI would beat humans at these games. Currently there are no humans that can beat AI anymore on these games. Solving FSD vision only will occur, people are skeptical, but that will not be a issue in the future.

Thinking about it in this vein makes me think it will take even longer. Checkers, chess, and go have progressively more parameters, but the parameters are still fixed and narrow, relatively. FSD attempts to solve a problem infinitely more complex, with a rich world full of parameters, sub-parameters, edge case, and changing circumstances. When I think of an AI that exceeds a human's ability to safely drive on earth's streets, I'm a bit scared {or more than a bit} of that AI. :)

Loved your conversation!! Remember learning to drive a car with Cruise control? I do..ahem..I'm 62. So, learning AP and FSD is akin to this. Furthermore, FSD itself is like someone (a neural network or say a constellation of computers and Tesla vehicles) learning to drive at a much higher level like the Borg collective in Star Trek or VIKI in I, Robot. I get it now, more than ever. Planning on getting a Model Y in Toronto and will get FSD for sure. Thank-you!!

Great interview and I look forward to James each time. With regard to forecasting FSD, perhaps a clever way to approach James' bet is for Tesla to continuously drop the Safety Score threshold as the interventions decrease. For example, right now, you need a 98 score to have access to the beta. After the interventions decrease by 20%, the new threshold is 97. Keep dropping as needed until you get to the whole group. Then everyone is much clearer when FSD will be considered complete.

Guys, spot-on with the media. I love the noise to signal/anti-signal analogy. James succinctly echoed my experience with using my Tesla knowledge as a bit of a litmus test for all things media.
