I always thought that this was the gem of "It's Hard," and still remember the show in Pontiac in '82 when they put John up, front and center, when they performed this. Easy to play armchair quarterback these days, but am I the only one who thought they should have let John's songwriting carry the band for awhile when Pete's head was elsewhere?

I was 13 and remember watching the simulcast on the tv in the basement rec room, sound through the stereo on the local FM rock station. I remember some kids at school discussing whether it was illegal to record it on vcr but were gonna do it anyway, one of them had a betamax. We didn't have one for a couple more years, then it was vhs. Earlier that year my older brother got to take a bus trip to another city to see them, they didn't play my city. I was deemed too young to tag along though I felt I was old enough and protested that decision. Funny how old I thought the band was then, old as my parents but cool, lol. A few years earlier I had won a Who Are You poster but I didn't know who they were at the time, ha ha. I must've been 9 or 10. I put it up in my room because I was proud to have won something. I'd look at it and think 'who are these strange looking weirdos anyway'. Ended up becoming my fav band.

Lol i was that same age too in 82 and also thought they were old then, too. Never would have guessed i'd ever see them, let alone 4 or 5 times over the next 37 years!

Definitely Pete's songwriting strengths were being poured into his solo albums rather than The Who. Given how strong John's 'Too Late the Hero' was perhaps he should have been allowed more of a contribution. The title track to that song would have been a great Who epic.

There’s a professionally produced video of this tour that was shot in Seattle. I only found out about it around 5 years ago. I was at that show. The sound is much better on You Tube.

Around this time, Pete was putting more of his energy into his solo work. In a sense, John was putting out better Who music. But he didn’t get very many songs on the album. Never did.

I had the VHS video, but it was nowhere as clean as your copy. I thought you might have the Japan DVD or something else even better. Compare your vid to the other vids from this concert on the 'Tube' and yours is the best by far. I seen the Cleveland concert before this one and Pete was on fire that night also. I strongly think he is the most overlooked guitar player of all time. The lead solo in 'Eminance front' from this same concert is proff of that! Thanks for posting.

interesting thought on John's songwriting carrying the band for awhile...thing is, as good a writer as John was, his talent as a writer was not enough to carry a band like The Who...The Who were spent by 82'..including Pete's songwriting and overall vision to move the band into a new decade
@braydenfletcher8159

peacemonger1967 Just my opinion. But I think the death of Moon sort of took the wind out of their sails! They knew they lost a key piece of the band and no one would ever be able to fill that spot. Zak Starkey is as close as you can get talent wise as far as Moons sound goes and he wasnt touring with them for 14 years

It's funny to see them changing their fashion to the early eighties MTV look, all zippers and slicked back hair and dance moves. They didn't want to be a dinosaur band living in the seventies, Moon was dead, the times they had changed, so you either change with it or be left behind. Even Zeppelin did that, you look at them in 80 and plant was sporting shortish hair, stone washed jeans and sleeveless shirts, just like everyone else, they were trying to stay relevant. I'm kind of glad both bands didn't go much further in that era, it just didn't fit them well. God bless them for trying though, but when you think of either band you don't think 80's, thank goodness, the fashion and music doesn't hold up very well decades later.

"Trying to stay relevant" is about the best you can say about The Who in the 80's. I've been a loyal fan since the late 60's, and absolutely loved Kenney's unique drum sound in The Small Faces, but listening to them soldier on together with the same old 70's riffs was... It's Hard. Definitely the low point in their careers for me, especially since the 80's remains my favorite decade of all.

@@lishlash3749 Sometimes I wonder what It's Hard and Face Dances might have sounded like had Keith Moon lived. His struggles at that time were so great he might not have even been in the band.
