I am a stutterer too, I understand why some people ask these questions like "Are you cold?" "Did you forget your name?" etc., they're just trying to rationalize why we don't speak fluently. I feel like the worse is when I'm talking and I stutter and the other person just ends the conversation or doesn't say anything. It makes me feel like I'm not worthy to speak to :( Anyways, thanks for the video educating others about stuttering!

“Did you forget your name/birthday” I HATE IT. I can’t stand when people say this. Like yeah I freaking forgot my own name. What do you think? “Slow down” is another one that ticks me off. “Spit it out” just makes me wanna slap them. I once had a super nice elderly man that knew what stuttering was and he was very patient with me and I swear it made my entire day! But I’ve also had someone be very impatient and mocking it and I hate when people do this. It makes me feel stupid and not wanna talk ever. I stutter the exact same way you do and I know how you feel. I hate it but sadly there’s nothing we can really do about it. Great video and keep it up!

You're a very brave woman for making this video Paige. I developed a stutter when i was 9 years old due to mental trauma caused by a death in my family. I have lived with my stutter ever since; i'm 42 years old now. I know how difficult and distressing it can be living with a speech impediment. My teenage years were very difficult for me, my school work suffered severely and i found it near impossible when speaking to girls. This affected my confidence in a big way and i've never had a relationship that's lasted more than 6 months or held down a long term job because of it. I don't like being interrupted mid sentence as it halts my flow entirely, and as for stupid things people have asked me...well i could write all day long about that. I often struggle to form words with certain letters like it's a mental block i have with them, and my breathing can become erratic and i begin to hyperventilate. It's comforting to realise i'm not alone, struggling with this debilitating afliction...and you're not alone either Paige, always remember that. Thank you for making this video, keep doing what your doing, you're an amazingly strong person and i wish you all the best. 🙂

Do you stutter when you talk to yourself? For me, it's very rare. Edit: Recently I tried to leave a voice mail and I was surprised that I couldn't do it even though no one was listening, just the fact that someone is GOING to hear it. It took about 20 minutes and a lot of tries to finally finish the call.

Thanks for such a helpful video. I've worked with a number of people who stuttered badly and all of them have surprised me in their ability to speak perfectly normally (but only in certain circumstances) One of them was a regular Friday night 'pub singer' who had the most beautiful clear and harmonious singing voice. The second chap who had the most appalling stutter could speak normally provided you did not look directly at him. The third chap would always speak clearly and without his stutter when he was deliberately 'wound up' by his workmates. At the point where he realised that he was being 'wound up' his stutter returned.

I do get the weird stares and I’m always worried they are irritated when they daze off because it’s hard to get up there and present everyday to a class. Even teachers have to be hold that I have a stutter due their ignorance, no it’s not confusion, they tell me “Well speak up??” or “I asked you a question” and it’s definitely hard. Paige, thanks for sharing to all of us. Having struggled with severe stuttering into my young adulthood, I have been shaped by it into a kinder, more patient and tolerant person. Thanks to the outreach and support of outspoken champions like yourself, I refused to yield to public embarrassment and personal isolation. Unlike non-stuttering people, I am aware of our keen awareness of the precious value of each word we can communicate, so we have almost no impulsive, negative things coming out of our mouths, so there is a far less negative mindset as a result. Yes. There are some shining positive aspects to our seeming “disability”. Warmest regards to you, and your family!

I don’t really socialise and prefer to be alone but I enjoy that quiet time where I’m able to think without a challenging verbal communication.
