To my sixteen year old self, Do you want the good news or the bad? The good news is we're happy, The bad is we're still barking mad. Right 'bout now you should be leaving that strange emo phase, Where black nails, ribbons and lace and a moody face were all the craze. Now, I'm still convinced that all that you're about to witness All the heartbreak, all the mistakes, all those failed attempts at fitness Every tear and shout and giggle has gone towards creating me. And I wouldn't change a single second of your happiness or misery. But, with all that said, I think there are some things you ought to know, Just to make your journey smoother, a bit less bumpy on the go. One: don't compare yourself to every girl you've met. Their bigger boobs,their longer legs, their better makeup because I will bet That every girl you've ever met has compared themselves to us. Our curvy waist, our curly hair, when all we thought was what's the fuss? You're not them and they're not you. And, holy crap, that's nice. So stop comparing and start self-caring, because all you are will more than suffice. Two: hold your horses, take things slower, think it through, 'Cause you're so good at jumping in the deep without a freaking clue. You fall in love with best case scenarios while ignoring all the worst, So when the worst come rolling round, your bubble's quickly burst. Fight the urge to race ahead. Be the tortoise, not the hare. You'll see the end before it's here, not fall over it when you're there. Three: take time to date yourself and don't let guys state your worth, Because half the guys you end up being with just didn't deserve Everything you have to offer because you didn't learn to love yourself Before you asked a boy to love you, which got you left up on a shelf. So figure out exactly who you are and THEN be daring Because you've just got to be more careful when it's your heart that you are sharing. Aside from that, I don't think I'd change another thing. Even that stupid decision you make that 2012 will bring. But remember there will be times when it feels like all is lost. When there's no way out from all that doubt and every bridge has been crossed. But if you call it quits, you'll never get to see where we end up. And I've gotta say it's pretty freaking good so don't give up. Life has got this funny way of being really bad, but then just like that, the light comes on And you will be so glad that you held on that bit longer so you can lay out in the sun. And I hope that I can make you proud. Love from me at twenty one. :)

@Flowerpaffer

Same. Sometimes the regret for not having done things is even worse than getting hurt or disapointed from doing them. But at the same time it doesn't mean that what you're doing is wrong or bad. It might be wrong for others but right for you, if you know what I mean. You don't necessarily HAVE to have your heart broken or had 15 different boyfriends at 20, life is different for everyone and you have to do whatever you feel is right for you.
@mymoviecalledlife

I think you are more of an observer. Someone who learns from watching others, so when you go through those situations yourself you will know how you want to respond. I don't know if that made any sense but all i can say is don't worry. You have so many more years to make mistakes. :) xx

@Dragonetoscone

I'm a lot like that myself, only I'm 22 and I think I've finally accepted that I do things at my own pace. I haven't made many so called "mistakes" and the few I have done are pretty recent. I don't really regret them though, because there's no way I could have not done them, because it felt so right at the time. And that's the way I hope all my future "mistakes" are too, because I don't think it's worth it to risk your own and someone else's feelings if you're not going to be wholehearted about it. But if you desperately want to make "mistakes" or to rephrase it, gain some experience, I might have a little something to share. I didn't make any of my "mistakes" until I was confident that I had friends around me who I could trust. I just didn't take any emotional risks until I knew that if everything went wrong, someone would at least listen to me and try to cheer me up. And how do you find that out? You talk to them. Everyone has problems, and when you find someone who tries to understand and help you, no matter what the problem is, you know you've found a winner. Good luck! :)

Annie Zeleznikow Then you may have to wait until you're 26 to have to read this poem/feel similarly to 21. That's the great thing about life (and the worst). It progresses, it changes, you change, and you grow. If you couldn't send a decent letter bak now, make it your goal to keep moving forward and growing so that in another 5 years you'll be able to send an amazing letter back. Keep your chin up, keep moving forward. Keep learning about yourself and exploring (the world and yourself) and it will get better. One day, you won't have a letter, you'll have a magnificent novel.

i don't know anything about you, but if you don't want to then fudge everyone else, don't! I agree that you can't even see blonde leg hair most of the time, so its relatively pointless and a waste of time. BUT social pressure is a big thing, and caving to it isn't always a bad thing, you can't fight every fight, you can't stand against every social wrong, you have to pick which ones are truly important and save your energy to fight them and I realise this has gone slightly deeper then it probably needed to! BUT if your happy then leave it, do what makes YOU happy, because its your body, don't change it to please anyone else. x

So inspiring and true! You have captured those feelings perfectly, especially about life having a way of being really bad and just like that the light comes on. Mine feels more like "to my 20 year old self" (I am 34 now)...that was the beginning of several emotional rollercoasters for me...and you are so right that you will be so glad that you waited it out. The resiliency of your heart and spirit is amazing.

This is such a good idea :) I really want to tell my 16 year old self (I'm 21) that life will be better and there will be up and downs with every little mistake and regret made but these mistakes and regrets have made me stronger as I've got older and that I've accomplished things that I never even thought about doing! I love your videos, they always help me when I don't even know that I need help (if that makes sense)

Did this remind anyone else of Tim Minchin?? (I mean that in a respectful "Carrie has good taste" way, not "Carrie copied his style" way). I once wrote a poem a bit like this because of Tim Minchin putting his rhythm in my head. There's something fulfilling about getting your words out in a clever way. Oh, AND, I would have done the same with boys - not learning to love myself first - and it would have screwed me up so much if I had ever been drawn to those boys (plot twist, I'm gay) so I'm glad Carrie is putting the word out there so young girls (and boys) know they're worth more than the flippant attention they'll get from the opposite (or same) sex. TLDR; Great work Carrie :D

That was incredibly sweet, and it kinda hit me hard because I'm currently 16. Honestly I'm petrified for the future. I'm scared that I won't become a great person and won't get the chance to be happy. All I can really do is hope. Sorry for the little self-rant, but all in all, thank you Carrie for that burst of inspiration.

"I hope that I can make you proud"- I love that, definitely something to live by: doing things to make *you* proud of *yourself*, things that you as a child would find so cool and exciting, and things that the future you will thank you for.

When you mentioned 'like a light being turned on' it reminded me of a video you made 2ish years ago, about having a bad couple of months and finding friends that help you turn on your 'light' ... I always felt I could relate to that video, and hearing you reference it (intentional or not) made me smile (:

Could you possibly do a "curly hair appreciation video" for all those curly girls and boys out there like ourselves? With like the top ten rules of curly hair/ how best to embrace it etc. Too many times are we told straight hair is "tidier/more beautiful" and that the only type of curls we should have are done by rollers. My sister has about a decade of heat damage due to straightening her hair so much since age 10 and it makes me sad : ( I have curls like yours and I've learnt to love them but it took me *years*

I get the curly hair reference even though everyone asked if I was electrocuted at birth! I'm glad my 20-something could hear this now because she still has the same worries sometimes as her 16 year old self.
