I started with an afro and I simply stopped combing it...my hair is thick and grows extremely fast and I love my hair...I doubt I would be a fan of buildup and I like the freedom to washing my hair several times a week...I don't like scalpy parts...I like the volume and body of not twisting and I like my edges...you are exceeedinly beautiful and you are a pleasant person.

First off, I want to say I appreciate this beautiful woman for making this video. I recently cut off my locks after growing them for about a year and a half. It was a great experience , in fact I'm in the process of restarting them. I believe I was somewhat ignorant to the fact of the different types of growth processes quote on quote. However, im a barber/cosmetologist and I like hair all types. I simply got tired of cutting my hair, because of my lack of trust in other barbers. So I've been watching videos, tutorials and sort to see how I want to start my journey again. Here's my thing with these different types of terminologies, referring to freedom locks, semi free locks and fashion locks. I'm from Chicago, and dreadlocks did not originate here obviously, it sort of evolved here from people watching and idolizing celebrities and television(lil Wayne,flocka) and generally just the down south look. If your not from Chicago or don't know about Chicago ,we are a rebellious city who follows trends and feeds off violence( chi-raq). I only cut my locks because they were too thin and began to fall out. I didn't realize how hypocritical I was being watching these dreadlock videos.Intially, I started watching them because I wanted my hair to be stronger and healthier than before alone with my spiritual walk. Now I'm seeing people differentiate freedom locks and or fashion locks. This is my thing isn't it all a fashion, trendy look. Everyone has locks now different types,sizes, colored etc, and are making daily,and monthly KZitem videos on their hair.Whats even more disturbing is now the discussion of "free locks" or traditional locks verses comb coil locks. Real Jamaicans never differentiate this, because this was there culture and they didn't have technicians. True enough Bob Marley talked about his matted locks but it wasn't a trend or major topic, it was apart of him. I choose to post this overly long message on this woman's video because she is the first to make sense of this stupidity and to realize it's only hair. It's doesn't make you tough, cute, or real. It's all about you and how you choose to express yourself. let's wise up black people and learn your heritage. Embrace the beauty in you. God bless 2017

You are beautiful, a great video the best that I've seen. I'm a Rasta and first locked up up when I was 14 back in '76 with beeswax what a feat! I didn't twist my hair then and didn't even know of the concept of twisting, I was told beeswax was used so I got some and grabbed sections of hair and dipped it in raw melted beeswax. My locks turned out flat. I cut them four years later then locked up again when I was 20 by plaiting my hair un plaiting and leaving it. I had them for 2 years then cut again. I finally locked for last time in 96 using the twisting method, and washed every 2 weeks. I had a full head of hair and used oils, gels and finally stuck to the oils because of build up. My hair got to waist length and over the years because of commitments etc I find find my self washing my hair once a month, every three months and when I can't take it no more. My hair started to thin due to weight and bathing in the sea every day while in the Caribbean. I decided to stop twisting 2yr ago

+Levi Mercury wow! Do you think it was because of the salt water that caused thinning? What kind of oil did you used to use? And do you still have locs now? Thank you so much for your comment! I can't wait to have waist length locs myself! I'd appreciate your advice!

Great, great video! I was watching another KZitem vlog-ger with neat, grid-patterned, yarn-sized salon locs. Beautiful locs! The thing is that since this person chose thin locs for thick hair, the vlog-ger has to rely on going to a salon and shelling out money because it's too time-consuming to re-twist that much hair. This person also didn't have the time to get to the salon so a couple of months went by. I mention this because of your "relaxed syndrome" term. The person's roots had thickened and were matting a bit and this person called their roots a "rat's nest." I thought, "Wow." They were just itching for that re-twist. I don't want to be in that kind of mental space or feel that pressed or reliant on someone else to care for my hair every month . . . for time and memorium. I could relate to that vlogger because I used to be in that cycle with my first set of locs. I was in the salon alot - for hours and shelling out all this money. I had medium-sized locs but my bangs and edges on one side started to thin out from all the pulling, over-styling, and excessive every 3 weeks or monthly palm-rolling. My hair grew back, but thinner in one small spot where I suffered the most tension. I had to do a big chop and become a loose natural even though I didn't want to at the time. I'm on my second set of locs, they're thicker than my first set accept around my edges and bangs. I put them in myself - TODAY! - with neat, geometric parts but I plan on only re-twisting once every 2-3 months and I'm okay with not seeing my parts all the time in lieu of having hair on my head.

+4mydearlady I'm glad to hear your loss have gotten thicker this time around! While there is no right or wrong way of going about styling locs, I've noticed the "I need a retwist" thing happens and the need to cover the roots with monthly twisting. Not my style, but twisted locs are beautiful none the less. With "semi-freeform", they have their cons as well lol, but the health of my hair was most important and leaving the roots alone I think is important. Thanks for commenting! And thanks for watching :)

Very good video! I've seen a few on the difference between freeforming and "semi-freeforming." I separate my locs, but I've always considered them just freeform. Maybe not. At 3+ years in though, I don't really care about the labels anymore haha.

I'm in the same boat! While there are still labels out there, how you go about obtaining the locs you want is all up to you! Good luck on your journey and congrats on 3 years! How are your "semi-freeform" locs after 3 years?

Lauren Jackson Overall they're pretty solid. I've come across some weak spots that have me worried a bit, but going thicker means they are stronger overall. Sometimes I want to go back to loose hair, but that's a momentary thing. :P

So basically the bad things of freeform is that it MAY not look that well, yeah it had way less cons compared to twist. I think I may go for semi freeform, I just think twisting is more expensive and time consuming. Thanks for the video, though I'm a couple years late lol Love your hair in this video by the way, a semi freeformer, cool

Hi, I really want semi free form locs, I have healthy strong afro hair that I have been twisting with my hands and a sponge for a bit. My question is can I get my hair twisted to get it locked (to help get the form) but I dont want the part sections of a FRESH re twist I like the fluffy growth and I dont want squares in my head. Is it better to just wax lock it myself...I will only do it ONCE so then it free forms after, but I really don't wanna twist and have wax in my hair.
@LaurenJacksonlocs29
8 жыл бұрын
+Monk Music thanks for your question! What you're suggesting is exactly what I did. The very first month I got my hair twisted was by a loctitian, so at first my hair was sectioned and you could see the squares, but after that month I never got my hair re-twisted and I let my hair do its thing. So over time, the squares will disappear with new growth. I believe my loctitian did use gel to help loc the hair, but after a few weeks I gently began washing my hair so the locs would not come undone. Eventually, they slowly began to lock up on their own and now they are semi-freeforming. I like the natural look as well, so don't worry, one twist with gel won't affect your hair too much in the long run. Hope this helped!

to remove the build up this is why we do a deep wash with AVC and baking soda every once or twice a year ..but you don't need gels only oils such as jojoba oil (solid form of it or shea butter is enough to twist your roots..for the roots that grows back ... having locs manicured or not .you are still unik since not even 2 manicured locs heads look the same and wearing locs is not a common thing as such we are still minority..moroever it make me lugh when people say they embrace their roots .and have organic locs ..and love them just the way they are but yet end up dying them ! ...commercials colors are chemicals as harsh as relaxers .. so ...and you will find very few loced persons who do not dye their hair ...but still will compare their hai r to somone who retwist earthy and organic ..smh...good voideo

@LaurenJacksonlocs29
8 жыл бұрын
+Brandeth Mackery Thank you! :) I don't ever oil my scalp, and I just started adding lavender oil to my regime a few weeks ago. I generally stay away from anything other than water based products. I only use shampoo (about once a week), and I spritz my hair with either rosemary water or aloe juice (with drops of lavender oil), and that's it! I don't get itchy scalp much, so I don't feel the need to oil my scalp. How often do you lubricate your scalp? And I've never heard of carrot oil! :0

+Brandeth Mackery Anything with water as the first ingredient, and that is mostly organic. So far I've only used Dr. Bronner's and Mill's Creek. But it's all personal preference. Whichever shampoo doesn't leave buildup and/or works best for your hair is all you need.

I do wear a scarf to bed. I've slept a couple times without it and it does seem to help the dreads lock only a little bit. But you have to be more careful with lint getting in your hair! @LaurenJacksonlocs29

+Amin Cowa I went to a loctitian first; she sectioned and twisted my hair with gel. But two strand twists are another popular way of starting lots if you're not freeforming. And in the beginning I did have flat locs first thing in the morning after sleeping. But every morning I either spritz my hair w/ water or wet my hair while showering so they aren't dry and flat. I'll make a video explaining more about that! Thanks for watching!

I would like to do like you but I am scared that it doesnt find that balance of yours, and that ill have to cut it all off. I tried to watch all ur videos, specially the first ones, but I am still not sure how you started it, and what makes it so balanced between neat and wild. Please help me get locks like that ? +Thara Messeroux your hair will only turn out the way it wants to! This is simply the way my hair progressed over time, and I didn't do anything specific to make it wild, yet neat! I promise I'm not leaving anything out! Haha I appreciate your kind words about my locs, but if you decide to get locs, you have to love and accept the way they will turn out, because they are YOURS. We can't compare or want other people's hair, because it's theirs! Lol we should support and appreciate others, but we must love our hair the way it was meant to be. You gotta let go and see how your locs want to grow!! It's a journey that is so worth it in the end. You can do it! You'll appreciate yourself more when you accept your locs they way they are, not compared to mine :)

There were no ways people could have had single locks back in the day without bee wax . Or else they will look like Bob Marley......bless his soul!
