The sewol ferry accident is so tragic in many ways and I still cry over it whenever it comes up. It's important to know that while most of the senior crew abandoned ship while students were still inside, the crew person with the lowest level, the boat's cafeteria worker, Park Ji-Young, went through great lengths to save as many students as she could. Survivors said she took them out of the ship to safety just before the water fully entered the boat, and when the students told her to stay outside to escape with them, she told them the maritime rule that "the crew leaves last" and went back in. She died. She was only 22 years old.

What's wild about Armin is that he was posting this on a cannibal-enthusiast chatroom online. And actually one other guy responded to it first, went over to Armin's house, said "um actually no I don't want this", and Armin said "okay, thanks anyway, have a nice day!" and let him go without a fuss. A very polite and considerate cannibal, all things considered. 🤷🏼

When Armin friend it up in a frying pan. Armin really wasn't a murder he just did what someone asked him to do. So I really don't think Armin should have received a life sentence . The worst part is the divers who recovered the bodies weren’t from police forces or the government. They were normal people volunteering to dive under and drag their bodies out. If I remember correctly one of those divers dragged out over 50 of those bodies and ended up killing himself later on due to how horrific it was.

Probably because police aren’t trained to be divers. It’s kinda ridiculous how people just assume police are these super humans when they are just as human as everyone else. It takes time to send in pro divers. So what they had, they had to work with. Unless they wanted their bodies to be swept away, eaten and so forth. I also saw the part where you put the were volunteering... they knew they were going to be hauling dead bodies. They could have stopped anytime. Honestly it’s a pretty f’d up story and the volunteers deserved better for saving the kids families from not having their bodies back with them.

Kim Gwan-Hong was a civilian diver that volunteered to help retrieve the bodies of the students that drown in the ferry. It was so horrible that he ended up killing himself. In one of his last interviews he said something that truly broke my heart: “When we left the scene, there were small birds in the rain and wind. Those tiny birds… were flying around… in the storm. The birds were so tiny and beautiful. And their call so touching… but it sounded like the students’ wailing, asking me not to leave them behind.” May he rest in peace

I watched another video of this horrible incident and there were videos of the kids trying to make jokes to stay calm, saying goodbyes and "I love you" to their parents and family, some jokingly, unaware that they were gonna die. the story of Armin Meiwes and Bernd Brandes is actually even more interesting, if that's possible. they agreed on his method of death before the murder and cannibalism. it was one of the men's (I believe Brandes') fantasy that involved cutting off Brandes' penis and cannibalising it, and then allowing Brandes to bleed out from the wound in a pool or tub filled with water. this is the body part that Meiwes cut off in the beginning, and it's why Brandes was bleeding out. however, their agreement was that Brandes would die from exsanguination/blood loss, but Meiwes eventually decided it was taking too long for him to die this way and killed him himself. and it was _this_ deviation from the plan, the lack of consent from Brandes to allow himself to be killed in any way other than exsanguination, that allowed law enforcement to prosecute Miewes. as Mr. Ballen stated, there was extensive video showing Brandes consented to the rest, and there was actually considerable doubt on the law enforcement side about whether a charge would stick due to this extensive consent. But because Brandes did not consent to being killed by Meiwes before he lost enough blood, they were able to prosecute.
@barefoot6745
Жыл бұрын
I am glad the cannibal was prosecuted and jailed. Clearly the victim was mentally ill and incapable of giving consent, and the psycho took advantage of that. No sane person in their right mind would want to go through such a painful death and then consumed after death. Very psychotic and disturbing! Actually, I think that psycho deserves death. He worked with a literal serial killer that was only caught and put away a few tears ago, Andre Crawford, and from what the drivers at the Chicago Sun-Times know he killed WAY WAY more prostitutes and women from the Southside because a guy I consider a brother was given a bag of a dozen+ pairs of women's shoes by Andre and so those never made it into the record. My mother was hit by a train in her early 20's and if not for being a trauma survivor addict from a crime filled addict family it could have been an inspiring story but instead the story is full of everyone in her family killing themselves or dying in prison. There is so much more to the Maura Murray story, it would take a complete podcast to tell it. There were lots of suspects, and a strange encounter with a witness who saw something strange as she drove past the car. No footsteps in the snow, but the mountain rescue dogs had her scent for about 100 meters, then it vanished. Other similar murders that may be linked. This story is very puzzling.

This is definitely the most puzzling case I’ve heard of and knowing she is from close to where I’m from makes it even more puzzling and I just hope they solve it. People believe she got picked up by someone and she went to start a new life but I don’t know there’s so many pieces to this puzzle it’s crazy

No footprints in the snow leading away from car. So she entered another vehicle that had pulled up in that small window of time. It's all documented, ignore all the other garbage possibilities. ...problem is, she took a ride from the wrong kind of fella. She then was rated and murdered in some way over a certain amount of time and she is part of the past. 😢

@@dibyaudhdas1978 @Dibyaudh Das It's not that bad when live here without much thought tbh so I'm afraid that I might've given you the wrong impression about Korea. I myself, haven't really been involved in these kinds of incidents, and Korea is definitely overall a very safe place to be considering its crime rates and stuff. In terms of overall safety and convenience, I'd say Korea does nail it though it may vary depending on which area you are in. However, as I did state in my previous comment, the corruption thingy is kind of annoying. To be more exact I think that unfair incidents often occur in Korea due to personal connections especially regarding politics. For instance it's seldom questioned how incapable ppl with not much enough knowledge for a certain position was given such position in the first place, and a lot of our nation's financial resources seems to get wasted here and there which is often speculated to be caused by bribery and corruption caused by personal connections interfering in formal matters. For this particular incident, I heard that there were military vessels that could've rescued ppl before this situation happened, or while it was happening, but the vessels were in fact defected so they were not given permission to go help them with those vessels by the higher ups in the military. Why did they have defected vessels in the first place? Their gear was not in the right shape if I recall correctly and I think this must have happened cause they attempted to save costs for additional profit. But all of this doesn't affect you too much if you don't give it too much thought, so you wouldn't have many or even any problems even if you do move in to Korea. It just gets pretty annoying if you get to know more about it through various means.

I was living in South Korea when the Sewol sank. Such a sad day for everyone that could have easily been avoided. Your recount is spot on. This was actually a Japanese ship sold to Korea. It operated for 18 years in Japan without incident (because it was being operated correctly and safely). From what i remember the Japanese seller told the Korean buyers not to make any modification or carry additional items on the bow, which they did....which also contributed to it listing and eventually capsizing.

The ferry story reminds me of the Korean shopping center collapse that killed a bunch of people. The building has originally been designed, engineered and approved as an office building. Then during construction the developer made all these huge changes to turn it into an indoor “shopping mall”, cutting out huge sections of the floor and roof diaphragms to create a massive atrium and skylight, reducing the size of the structural columns, and adding a massive a/c unit on the roof. The developer has bribed the inspectors and gotten all the changes approved without making any engineering corrections to compensate for the weakening of the building structure.

I actually saw a video online a while back now.. it was from the third story. It was the students recording on their phones in their rooms all with life jackets on and water starts running into the halls / rooms and they’re all so confused...some are scared, some are laughing anxiously, some are recording themselves telling their families they love them and that they don’t want to die. I didn’t know he even gave the order to evacuate! I was under the impression her told everyone to stay and await instructions and put on life vests...it’s believed that if the people hadn’t been wearing they would have survived! Being so far into the ship, on its side, with the life vests on basically made it nearly impossible for anyone to escape once they realized there wasn’t going to be any more instructions! That captains negligence and cowardice literally cost the lives of nearly 300 CHILDREN! I thought Scetino (not sure of spelling, the captain of the costa concordia) was a coward and scum of the earth....but THIS guy takes the cake!

If anyone was wondering about the Sewol Ferry Disaster, the President of South Korea, Park Geun-Hye was impeached due to corrupt budget cuts to the South Korean Coast Guard. The recovery efforts were also cut short for god knows what reason. There are still volunteer divers that go out to try and recover bodies to this day. The history and information about this disaster is insane. If this interested you, I suggest going and doing some research. It is 100% worth your time and the negligence will infuriate you.

I watched a documentary about the Sewol disaster and always wondered why it sank as it wasn’t properly explained on the documentary I saw. Terrible disaster and it makes me so angry as well as sad. Due to the illegal refurbishments and the negligence from the majority of the crew and the authorities. Also on the documentary I watched, one of the students trapped on the ship said that the people who don’t stay put in disasters and try to escape normally survive and the ones who stay put normally perish.
@caitlin6935

I watched a couple documentaries on it. In all of them they stated or alluded to the captain never put out an evacuation notice, but proceeded to evacuate himself. Either way is messed up. But when I heard that the last command was to stay where you were and then nothing. I was shocked. It took a long time to sink and divers were willing to go in and rescue but they were told by the government/authorities not to. The US military ship was there in 40min. As well as a ship from Japan but they turned both away. The political tension made them decide it was worth killing all those kids and not get help. They had many people trying. There’s even footage of fishing boats getting yelled at for not turning around. They weren’t even letting fishing boats help. So sick.

That last story is terrifying. I cannot imagine being completely helpless in your own death. I do know for sure that if I'm on a ferry, or any kind of boat that capsized or fell over onto its side, there's no way in hell I'm just staying in my damn room like what? I cannot comprehend doing that. I don't care how much experience the captain has, its not made to float on it's feckin side and we sure as hell aren't gonna get out and push it back over like a rolled over jeep
@nottoday3561

To understand why they stayed, you have to be aware of korean culture. Firstly remember they were children, and you're already taught to listen to adults. Secondly there is a big thing in korean culture about listening to those older than you, and people who hold positions above you, which also explains why most of the crew listened to the captain and abandoned ship with him. Not doing what you're told isn't seen as an option.

Most teenagers don’t know any better. Their whole lives have been spent, conditioned to take orders from adults, to respect their elders and do as they’re told by the adults in charge. That captain has a special place in hell. He should have been served the death penalty instead of life in prison. He didn’t deserve air, he still doesn’t deserve to have air in his lungs. Just like all those kids he killed who were denied air in theirs. The bastard.

Brent Haney not entirely too sure but what I do remember is that the "piece of meat" they attempted to eat was actually the Brandes' penis so I assume it was also somehow sexual. Also Meiwis was known to having bitten and almost killed his previous gay sexual partner. Edit: That last part is wrong it was actually Brandes who tried to have his ex boyfriend bite his penis off and even took a knife into bed with them once.

Something I learned from ship sinking documentaries is the moment a ship is starting to list you get on deck and close to a lifeboat. If told to go back inside ignore it and stay on deck. If a ship is listing it is taking on water, doubly so if it's on its side entirely. Not that am blaming the poor people who died, the captain and crew is at fault.

Maybe or maybe not. It's open to interpretation. From an article about the song on genius.com: “Spring day” seems likely to be a tribute to the Sewol Ferry tragedy. Though not the complete song but one part is dedicated to that. There are no official confirmations from BTS themselves on saying that “Spring Day” was actually about the Sewol ferry tragedy as BTS wished to leave the interpretation of the songs and MV to the viewers as they mentioned during their Wings Tour in Seoul Press conference.
