Unfortunately the model x in this video was at standstill when the accident happened. Depending on angle at which a vehicle is hit and at which force, a Airbag could potentially cause more damage to the human body then it would prevent. With a vehicle unable to determine forward speed, it is safer to not deploy front airbags.
@syrena911

If you're not wearing a seatbelt, airbags deploy above 10-12 mph, if you're wearing seatbelt then it's 16 mph. Or the equivalent force. But, rear end accidents don't always have airbags deploy as the sensors are in the front. That's for ALL cars, not just Teslas.

Even though battery fires are less common, they are way more dangerous than gasoline fires, as the best way to put out a lithium fire would be with CO2, and you would need a lot of it for a car. In gas fires, you just need loads of water which a firetruck and hydrant can easily provide.

Either way 13 mph and 22 mph are too fast for any parking garage, especially a narrow one.
@JohnH0130
2 жыл бұрын
It's bizarre that the info would be reported in inconsistent units [km/hr for deceleration. miles/hr for vehicle speed]. Might be because vehicles sold for US markets report speed in mi/hr, since that's how speed limits are posted and how the speedometer reads. Possible cars for markets where speed limits are km/hr report speed in km/hr. The report clearly shows the vehicle had reached a maximum speed of 22 mph at the moment of impact, and vehicle deceleration reached a maximum change of 22 km/hr at a point 0.2775 seconds after the impact event in the longitudinal direction; that is, front to back direction. There was an additional small increment of speed loss recorded in the side to side direction.

I think a big reason why fires on normal cars vs EVs are not really getting reported is that normal car fires are easy to extinguish while a burning EV will basically burn to the ground without anything stopping the flames.

#4 The reason Tesla fires are a big deal is because they are ELECTRICAL FIRES which are WAY more dangerous since they are MUCH MUCH harder to put out and they almost always re-ignite. Here's a quote from a new article "Eight firefighters ultimately spent seven hours putting out the fire. They also used up 28,000 gallons of water - an amount the department normally uses in a month. That same volume of water serves an average American home for nearly two years. By comparison, a typical fire involving an internal combustion car can often be quickly put out with approximately 300 gallons of water, well within the capacity of a single fire engine."

1st one, this is all on the Tesla driver Joe who started the incident by camping out in the left land and cutting off the jeep, Joe kept it going and even lied to the police several times. It starts with Joe camping out in the left lane enjoying his "slow pace" which ticked off the Jeep driver (would most people)- black car didn't look like he was driving "erratic" - Joe turned on his turn signal to pass the black car just as the Jeep was going to pass Joe, and caused the Jeep to slow down (again). The Jeep was then forced to pass Joe on the right because Joe continued to camp out in the left lane, that's why the Jeep gave him the finger. Joe either lied about not knowing why the Jeep gave him the finger or Joe is totally oblivious to everything around him. As soon as Joe passed the black sedan he went right back to camp out in the left lane again which ticked off the Jeep driver again (would me too). That's why the Jeep jumped in front of him. When Joe passed the Jeep on the right he didn't hit a bump, he intentionally swerved toward the Jeep (as in road rage swerving). Joe then goes back to camping in the left lane for the upteenth time. Joe said he waited until the last minute to take the off ramp but what really happened is the Jeep was trying again to pass Joe on the right but Joe blocked him intentionally. Says, "Joe began driving normally" as he again intentionally swerves into the Jeeps lane, then in the roundabout Joe again crosses over into the other lane and in front of the Jeep just before the Jeep hits Joes front right bumper. The Jeep driver brake check Joe and Joe hit the Jeep in the rear. They weren't going fast and I think Joe hit the Jeep on purpose because they weren't going very fast and Joe was driving to close to the Jeep's bumper. The officer may have declined to view the recording because Joe was "one of those people" and the officer could tell Joe was lying. Not only that but by the time the incident went up the chain, people like Joe would only show an edited, or partial video showing the Jeep responding to Joes antics. People like Joe only show certain parts of the video and not the whole video. I'm sure the original officer could tell Joe was lying so Joe was one of those who called the officers supervisor to him the edited story of what happened and since the supervisor wasn't there he gave Joe the benefit of the doubt, which is what Joe was trying to do.

The clip at 19:40 the speed was to low for an airbag to be of any use so it didn't go off
@gajustempus
2 жыл бұрын
the reason the Model X airbags didn't deploy: The impact speed was too slow. The force behind it (thanks to the truck's mass) was intense, but the speed was quite low, just a little above a car compactor. All airbags have minimum deployment speeds preset. So that's why they don't deploy on low speeds (and they wouldn't been able to do much as well, as they aren't built for stuff like that)

Correct, a lot of airbags even have 2-stage gas generators. So when the impact sensors notice only a minor (but with anough force, as you said) accident only the the small gas generator fills the airbag. That way it doesnt hurt the passengers. I hope thats halfway correct english.

I 'believe' Tesla has since resolved this issue as we've had reports of people who have been hit in the side whilst stationary and their air bags deploying on that side of the vehicle. Though it's worth noting if you're hit from behind I don't believe an airbag would deploy straight away anyway as by the time your head goes forward it won't be much use. The chance of injury there comes down to the head rest on the seats generally and how well positioned your seat is to reduce the gap between your head and the head rest I would imagine! Of course in this case it was really low speed, probably why the air bag didn't deploy on being pushed into the vehicle ahead.

Regarding incident #2, in California you are supposed to make your right turn using the bike lane - that's why the solid white stripe gives way to a dashed stripe when you get close to the intersection. The video clearly shows Doug's Wife was NOT in the correct lane for her right turn, so obviously the BMW driver assumed she was going straight and was (correctly) trying to use the bike lane for his right turn when she turned across his path.

11:50 Well it was unintended acceleration. He intended to stand on the brake but stood on the accelerator :D But yeah, still drivers fault. 18:42 The impact to the rear of the tesla was more to the side (can see this in the video and the photo afterwards at the yard) . I don't know if there are airbag sensors at the back but I know front sensors are typically in the middle of the bonnet / hood. As for the front sensor. The impact didn't seem that hard on the front . Sure, the truck had hit it and shoved it forwards into the other truck but the actual front of tesla to truck in front wasn't that hard a hit. The airbag sensors don't go off on minor crashes. The other thing to consider is because the truck was locked up and sliding sideways the hit to the tesla on the side / back would have pushed the tesla crooked making the impact more on 1 side of the front end instead of the middle (can see this by how the bonnet / hood is folded more on 1 side and not equally ) As for the truck trying to "take advantage of the opening". Looking at the truck the wheels are turned sharp left which would suggest to me that they were locked up for a while and trying to steer away from hitting the stationary traffic in the lane where the tesla was. In other words they didn't want that space. They were just out of control and trying to stop the truck in the lane they were in plus steer it out of the skid. Of course locked up steering wheels don't steer. They just slide. 28:48 Kurt. Escalating the situation by following, then passing, then getting out of his car, then cutting him off and so on. This is a good way to get shot.
@jacobcarlson4010

To your point of the collision sensors; point blank, you're wrong. If that were the case, then the air bags wouldn't deploy (nor would they be required to) in a collision involving only the frontal corners of the vehicle. I don't remember exactly what year it was, but here in the US there was a whole hullabaloo about cars that had previously gotten 5-star crash ratings were suddenly getting demoted to 2 or 3 star ratings because the NHTSA had updated crash testing to include frontal (1/4 vehicle width) corner impact testing; specifically because they were finding that those types of crashes were becoming more common, and the existing crumple zone designs of the time were apparently inadequate for those types of crashes (lots of moderate to severe injuries, even in "5-star" vehicles). Now, I don't find the actual impact speed that should trigger the airbags to deploy (at least, not on the NHTSA site; google gives a number and cites NHTSA as the source, but the site that it's citing says nothing of the sort) so that's up for discussion; but the severity of the damage, plus the fact that the driver blacked out and had impact injuries from hitting his head on the wheel tells me that this was a severe enough crash that the airbags SHOULD have deployed.
@infinitiman4570
2 жыл бұрын
@@jacobcarlson4010 just so you know. That had nothing to do with the air bags. It was a weak point in the structure that would collapse if you caught a tree at a diagonal angle around the headlight area between the wheel. Also, you would never want an air bag that deploys straight forward when going sideways. At best side airbags would deploy which is why they started being installed. Sensors for driver and passenger air bags are located in the front for front impact only. The real question should be, why didn’t the seat belts lock him in? In this situation, the seat belt should have locked the moment he jerked forward causing him to not hit his head on the steering wheel and knocking him out.
