In this first episode of TREKYARDS we take a look at the Romulan Bird of Prey as seen in the TOS episode "Balance of Terror". Also know as the Warbird or War Eagle. Enjoy!
In Balance of Terror, Scotty makes the statement that the Roman vessel only had simple impulse drive. This of course could not be true because each of the Federation Listening Post were in a different solar system. The USS Enterprise had to use Warp drive to travel between these systems and the Roman vessel would have as well. The answer to this is very simple, while cloaked at sublight speeds the Bird of Prey/Warbird purged the plasma from its warp nacelles to enhance its stealth profile while cloaked. Also the Romulans were already beginning to use exotic warp cores which were not recognized as such by the Enterprise's sensors, especially considering the limited data collected while the short time while it was decloaked. The battle between the Warbird and the Enterprise took place within a solar system which means the romans would have need to utilize its warp capability, especially if it was more focused on health and utilizing its cloaking device. I run the LUG RPG for Star Trek and this is how I address the issue in my game universe because it best fits the information available.

I suspect that the issue was one of being able to operated tactically -- i.e., in a combat environment -- at warp. The Constitution-class can do so (as seen in "The Ultimate Computer"), but the Romulan Warbird pretty clearly cannot. There's also the power consumption issue: if the ship is cloaking and arming it's torpedo, it doesn't have the energy to spare for anything else.

When it comes to propulsion and the lack of a warp drive, one line of thinking is that these ships were carried by a larger vessel that dropped them off in order to patrol an area. Another line of thinking is that since the Romulans didn't get warp drive technology until the trade agreement with the Klingons in 2267, the Romulans had developed a one way warp propulsion system that allowed them to travel to various destinations that hopefully had bases or depots that would allow them to refuel. In all actuality, you could probably combine the two since the Romulans didn't leave Vulcan until 470 A.D. and find/colonize Romulus until sometime in the mid to late 500 A.D.s. Sometime in that 1600 years, they had to have come up with some kind of FTL propulsion in order to actually colonize as many planets as they had and create the Romulan Star Empire that Earth encounters by 2152. I thought about this a little more and there is another possibility but it is never mentioned or seen and that is a warp sled of some type. The only time we see this technology is when Mr. Spock is ferried aboard the USS Enterprise in ST:TMP. That being said, I think the most plausible theory is a mothership that picked up and dropped off the experimental Warbird that we observe. I say this because even with impulse, the distances required to travel to and then destroy 4 outposts in a short amount of time would have to require some kind of FTL technology.

Going to say this on here so hopefully I don't need to repeat myself again. MANY of you have stated that I need a new camera. I do not! Its the same camera I use for all my videos, a perfectly fine HD one. However considering Samuel is in the UK and we record our Skype calls for this show, sometimes the quality suffers on one end or the other. He does the recording on the England side so, unfortunately it is my side more often then naught. I DO NOT WANT TO HEAR THAT I NEED A NEW CAMERA AGAIN. Thanks for listening. - Captain Foley

In Star Trek Online, the T'liss (Romulan warbird) is used as a starter ship (for new players in the Romulan/Reman "faction"). It does'nt have the super charged plasma torpedo (giant red ball), however, the "modernized" version (the one who's more "edgy" and who look like a dagger) having it (the tier 5 version, level 40-50). During one of the romulan first quests ("Crossroads at Crateris"), the ship's engineer said "i don't know how this ship can still fly and don't explode... its place is in a museum!!" As far as we know, Romulans invented the cloaking device (or maybe stole it from a conquered specie and then pretended having invented it). Much later, for a brief period, in a cooperation effort with the Klingon Empire (against the Federation), they shared some of their technologies to create the D7 (the Romulan and the Klingon versions, but both having similar specs). n_n

Over the years I've had a few thoughts about why cloaking devices can't be used with weapons and shields. Weapons fire would give your position away, perhaps the power of shields would be detectable. So it could be not that it's too much power to use both, but that too much power usage would render the cloak useless.

Great episode. Although this Romulan ship is made in the 60s, it’s still a beauty. To help ties this ship to ENT & TNG, I wouldn’t change the design at all but maybe change the color from white to greenish and the nacelles lights be green as well.

Wow the first ship is The Romulan Warbird. from TOS. Well I know that the enterprise warp drive was out in the show where no man has gone before they use impulse drive to get to a near by planet it was only a few light days away . Also in Star trek online the impulse drive can go at full impulse and it would be like warp 1.1 or more. The ship that does this is the enterprise D when the ship is two ships the one ship does with impulse drive is warp 1.1. Also the Romulan people live along life they can travel at warp 1.1 and still get to the federation and back to the home world in their life time. All in all a great start to this youtube channel

The "low profile" from the front & rear is to make the ship more difficult to target and hit when in combat. Klingon ships (D-class) also have a low profile when viewed directly head on.

Very well done. Some suggestions for further episodes: 1) A Winged Defender episode. The Winged Defender is one of the FASA Star Trek RPG ships. It's one of the non-cannon ships that people have pushed for to be in most media including Star Trek Online and fan productions as well as official productions. 2) a two part video of the evolution of the Enterprise. The first one being the pre-production drawings and such from The Making of Star Trek and other sources showing how the Enterprise evolved on paper and through the show's 3 years on air. The second being the onscreen and behind the scenes evolution of the Enterprise: TOS, A, D, B, C, E, NX-01, J, etc. Yeah I listed them in a specific order. 3) when fan boys sneak stuff in. Next Gen was notorious for references to other shows. A LCARS long range sensors plate that sold on eBay in the 1990's (show used) had the TARDIS from Doctor Who on it. The eponymous Yamato from Space cruiser Yamato was referenced several times and also showed up in LCARS panels. Many, many other examples.

I have a fan theory about the Romulans having a cloaking device in the 22nd century. The Romulans did have cloaking technology, but it could only cloak small devices such as mines due to the immense power consumption. They did have a prototype encountered by the NX Enterprise, but it proved ineffective by causing power surges throughout the ship on a semi regular basis and it was dangerous because it also caused several near warp core breaches which led to it scrapped soon afterwards which is why they weren't used during the Earth/Romulan War. By the time Balance of Terror came about, the Romulans had solved that problem. And both sides used futuristic weapons in the early days of the war, but after a while they had exhausted most of their hardware and supplies forcing them to revert back to nuclear warheads. Eventually both sides realized that they were going to destroy one another unless peace could be reached. Soon there after, a cease fire was declared and the Nuteral Zone was created.

+Jero Briggs The ST:ENT episode "Minefield" does show the 22nd century BoP/warbirds cloaking as well, and were good enough that even the 31st century quantum plexing beacon supplied by Daniels couldn't pick them up. I think the ENT season 4 Babel One story arc answered what the Romulans really were doing by showing the warbird drone ships made use of an advanced holographic cloaking system, which could mimic other races starships.

The game was created by the same people who created all the ships from TOS. You can find specific ship SSDs online with upgrades that follow the timeline. My memory of the episode was that the Bird of Prey was slower than the Enterprise, and was not even warp capable. Warp 6 and Warp 8 speeds would have it equal to the Enterprise, not slower.
@Djarra

Actually Scotties line is that the ship only has impulse signature, but is delivered in such a way as if he can't work out how it is keeping speed with the Enterprise. Its probable that the ship had an artificial quantum singularity rather than matter anti matter to get FTL speeds (later Romulan ships use this, as it is a real world theory developed in the 50's) but his sensors were not calibrated to read that. The first cannon mention of the Romulans using that technology was between their two appearances on TOS when it's used by another ship. In the novelization the ship is warp capable, and as with the remastered a BoP involved in 'The Enterprise Incident'
@AbelMcTalisker
9 жыл бұрын
Al Hartman Those nacelles on the end of the wings always looked like warp drives to me and Scotty in the episode seemed to be talking more about the ships power generation rather than its propulsion. It was only later in the series that impulse engines were defined as being sub light engines. It was Franz Josef in the blueprints they published that decided that the ship was sub light and that was caried forwards into the SFB game later. So `Romulan warbirds are sub-light` has never really been cannon and Scotty was in the episode actualy talking about power supply (Anti-matter Vs Nuclear fusion) and its effect on sub-light maneuverability.

I did not remember that the Romulan Bird of Prey used in Balance of Terror was not warp capable. I was thinking it did not travel at warp while cloaked because Warp travel might give it away.. Sort of like a modern Submarine can go faster under water then on the surface but generally does not because that would cause cavitation noise and a wake on the surface above the sub.

I like the Romulan Bird of Prey, it's a nostalgia factor. I don't think it looks that great but it's solid. I love what John Eaves did with it in Enterprise BUT...it's far to streamlined and contoured to be a predecessor (like many thing in Enterprise) it doesn't fit the universe.

saquist I think the problem is that if it looked pre TOS. It would look extremely dated. TOS Enterprise looks dated, it's from an era when CGI wasn't available an being honest in many ways we use technology more advanced than it had on screen now. So it just wouldn't work, it would be hard for people to suspend their disbelief. Hence why I think JJ's new Constitution, while not in keeping with the old ships. At least updated it to what we would more closely expect to see of something from the future. It looks impressive an futuristic regardless of if you like the aesthetics or not.

+yonumpty You've got a point there but I would have preferred that the Enterprise look like the TOS era Enterprise but I know that I'm probably in the minority there! I thought it was really good when the USS Defiant made an appearance in Enterprise and it was a completely faithful depiction of a TOS era vessel, but the alternate reality spin is a satisfactory reason why it is the way it is.

+ajs1031 The wording is impulse power though aka fusion power. This warbird would be still capable of warp travel but much more limited than a Constitution or D7 (providing a good rationale for the Klingon-Romulan Alliance that involved technology exchange where the romulans got D7s with their better warp drive and M/AM power cores).
@jder06

I like this ship but I never liked the idea of no warp drive. Later I remember learning that they did have warp ships to carry a group of these ships into the battle area. An old story about the reason they switched to the D-7 for the Romulans , was Paramount some how lost or damaged the original Romulan model, and they had to make do and change on the fly , the story idea.
@jerobriggs6861
9 жыл бұрын
You are correct. Sometime after Balance of Terror the model was destroyed in a fire. For season three, the studio had built a model for the Klingon ships so they just decided to use that for the Romulan ships as well rather than go through the time, which likely they didn't have, and the money to build a new model.
@jder06
9 жыл бұрын
Jero Briggs Shame, I had always wanted the idea to be , the Romlans tried one last time. This time I wanted them to go steal a Klingon ship and then have their engineers make a new class of warp warship, but still look close to the original warbird, but no.
