the brass bushing has two notches that go inwards , so when they are all the way in to hold the gears in place the oil can get into the bushing and lub the shaft

I’ve found that heating a case with a heat gun for a few minutes helps a lot when installing bushings and bearing races.

I should have kept watching, my question was answered when I saw there is not enough room to insert the shaft key if the bushings are installed first.

Thanks Thomas, It does seem so easy until you try it but it nice when you finally get past that step and move on to the next one. I am looking forward to putting this tiller to work in my garden this spring. Thanks for watching.

Putting those bushings in the freezer for a few hours might help before install...

It seems like you could use a little Loctite to hold the key on so it doesn’t fall out like that.

Why not use petroleum jelly on the key to help hold it in place?

Could the axle bushings be drove in first, then slide the shaft through?

Only the left side because you install the shaft through the right side with the woodruff key in the shaft. The R/S bushing would interfere with that process.
