Your work is fantastic and your passion shows it. Making the canopy full length for the other platform would be awsome and would take it to the next level 👌 keep up the great work

Ah thanks for that, that was a really nice comment, thank you. Yes, you are right about the dogs, they just need love and not to be put in the hands of morons, my Rottie is 10 years old now and killed anyone yet and the American XL Bully is 18 months and a complete doughnut. I really hear you on the full length canopy and I reckon I'm going to end up doing it, even if it means I can lift it in half for when the trsins run. But yeah, definitely with you on that. Take care and thanks for taking time to watch and comment. All the best, Lee

It will allow you time to think about you've done so far see how it works and maybe some changes if necessary. Also the other part you'll work on will give you fresh ideas and something else for the viewer to look at. Hope this helps and hope to be at GETS on the 14th. Susannah

Hi Lee, You are right that part of the layout is looking great a super place to get some nice video footage for YT so well done. You asked about the canopy for the wider platform well I think one the same length as on the other one will be fine because if you look at most stations even terminus ones there is always some platform open to the elements and as you do want to see the trains I think the full length one would be to much. The platform lights if your model is like the real one then the platform with 2 seperate lights is wider so as the edge of the platform needs to be well lit the centre one would not do it. Keep up the good work and remember I have a Train Set so what do I know!!!!!keep well. Cheers Robert.

Hiya Lee. Your layout so far is an excellent work in progress. If you are modelling an exact station then best to get as near as possible to real location. If it’s a representation then personally I would repeat the canopy on the other platform and put some kind of shelter on the station building side too to the same length as others. My opinion of course but it is your railway and you have done a great job thus far.. Dog wise, I think you are right about the idiot owners of an animal that can be a very loving companion. They have bad reputation due to the bad press the 1 in 100 incidents attract. Also, if you show the animal love and care it will repay that love.. Definately owners imo.. All the best mate, take care..Chris

Hello Chris how are you mate. Good to hear from you as always. Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you like it. Right okay, canopies... if tried so hard to replicate Upminster as best I can so far and for that reason, I totally agree that it should be long length as of the real thing or representation, so I think have both. Long length but have it so I can also half it if I want to or for a running session. The canopy still needs to be done for the old station platform but the runs an equal length as the one I've just made, so I'm sorted on that. Thanks for your views on dogs too, I'm glad we are on the same channel with that too. Chris it's a pleasure talking to you mate as always. All the best and speak soon. Lee

Hello mate, how you been keeping? Glad you like the canopy and yeah, I know exacly what you mean about the waiting room being lost if it extends over it because I was thinking exactly the same thing. I'm in this dilemma, I don't want the canopies too long because it drowns out the waiting room and the veiw of the trains, but at the same time, it is how Upminster is, and it might give it that different look. The thing with modelling, is that you have to make compromise. I don't know mate, I really don't. Anyway, I'm gonna start something a bit different on the layout, I've got 3 bare baseboards so really looking forward to working on the blank canvas. I'm glad like it though, means a lot. We will definitely have to book another hot tub and beer session, as long as Ky aka devil dog doesn't lick you to death! Glad you know ky because when people talk about them, you know it's not true. Hello Norman, good to hear from you as always mate, hope you've been keeping well. Yes, you are definitely right. What I thought I'd do, is make the canopy the same length as the one I've done, but, also continue to build it to the full lengh as per Upminster but have it detachable, so I can have the full length or lift it off to have it equal length as the other for when I run trains, if that makes sense? I reckon that'll work. Also the break ftom the station will do me good and make me more enthusiastic about the layout. Norman, I've still got got the 3 other lengths of the layout that are bare baseboards, so it really is quite exciting. I've thought of a few ideas already, but just getting the bottle to commit to it. In regards leaving the station side & working on another area instead, keeps the brain fresh. Just stumbled on your channel and have subscribed. Great model and keep up the steady work. When you get tired of an area - move on to something new, you can always return at a later date! The long awning, in my opinion, would really enhance the station - it may hide some detail but as with the existing awning, think of the low-level views. With regard to the class 302, Britannia Scale Models produce a ready-to-run version but the price is eye-watering!!!! DC Kits did produce a kit for a while at a reasonable price.

Hi Keith (going by the user name). I don't know how I never found this 302 model, but wow, you wasn't kidding with the eye watering price, I pumped a good few quid into getting the tube stock, but to be honest, it actually tempts me, just because it's a 302 and they are what Upminster was all about in the 80's and something that means so much to me growing up in the 80's. As for the canopies, there is the benefits of shorter canopies (same length) and this means more train view, but... I know exactly what you mean by eye level veiwing and leys be honest, I'm modelling Upminster as best I can over the past few years and maybe go the full way with correct length canopies. I'll be starting on something new with the layout to give me a break from the station and hopefully bring more interest. You really have made a great comment here and thank you for that and the info on the 302 model (never knew it existed), but thats the great thing with sharing content. Hi Lee. I'm with the majority here, you should do the other canopy as well, especially since the one you've done looks great. If you want to get closer to the I beam legs you might find something in brass? Sounds as if you need to step back from the station for a bit and think about it, go and make a viaduct with some grotty workshops under it or something for a change. I had a Staffy cross rescue dog that reacted badly to small children. Nature or nurture? I don't know for sure but I suspect he'd had bad experiences when he was young. Such a shame as it meant I had to keep him on a tight leash when we were out.

However I understand what you mean about missing out the view of the great work you have done on the far platform. I guess the best thing is to live with what you have, and if you get that little niggle in your mind that you need to add the canopy, do it. If you are happy, then apply your time and skill to another part of your layout.

They are too near the platform edges and don’t look safe. Another canopy on the open platform to match the first one would finish it all off very nicely indeed, mate. How about a Bully dog attacking the man who has fallen onto the track? Foot off, blob of red on his leg, job done! That’s what I call realism. Your hard work is being rewarded, so don’t lose heart, just move onto the next part of the layout.

But I think if the owner is responsible and the dogs is under control it’s fine. As for the canopy it looks great and i see no harm in doing another one although I would be tempted to do a couple one by the main bridge and one by the footbridge, but then you have the dilemma that you’re not then being faithful to Upminster station 🤔 If you’re a bit fed up with doing the station, have a go at another project for now, something that you really want to do and come back to it later, it’s a hobby not a job as someone once told me! Some great scratch building Lee, you are becoming quite the dab hand. You asked about the canopy. Personally Id keep them all the same length, but what is the real station like? I dont know many stations that have canopies to the very extreme ends of the platforms. Richard from Everard Junc made a very good comment regarding what you want to do. It sounds youve reached a limit on the station (for now) and perhaps you need to start elsewhere on the layout. Keep it fresh, its all about having fun and the moment it becomes stale or hard work you should move on to areas new. You will feel better and the content will be quite fresh for viewers. New viewer here with some catching up to do on the previous videos. Looking great so far and a great subject choice too. Always had a soft spot for Upminster station and it's something I would model if I had the time and space. Will the layout include the old BR signal box at the eastern end of the station? Only asking as my dad was the signalman there back in the late 70s/early 80s. Used to spend a lot of weekends in there with him (wouldn't be allowed now I'm sure) and as a result, got to drive a Class 302 one Saturday on the Upminster/Grays branch. The driver invited me along for a cab ride when he was picking up the token and I got a go at driving it (doubly wouldn't happen today). Great childhood memories for me! Keep up the great work....be fab to see some flare sided LT CP stock on the layout. Loved those trains!

Wow! What an interesting comment. You got to drive a 302? That really is amazing. I'd love a couple of 302's on the layout because it would be the ultimate addition to the model, but sadly, none of the manufacturers model it, which really surprises me. The br signal box you speak of, was it on the other side of the road bridge (elevated entrance to the station)? I'd like to look into this as it's fascinating. Thanks. Lee

I used to work for Ian Allan as a Buyer (aviation/military) for their mail order dept. Got to see lots of reps and I remember asking the guy from Bachmann once if they would ever consider a Class 302, 304 and some LT tube and subsurface stuff. He told me there wouldn't be a enough liveries or public interest to produce them. Naturally, I strongly disagreed and I have no idea why no one makes a 302 or 304. Such a staple of BR commuter services for so many years and after all, they did a Class 205! The BR box was situated near to where the IECC Box is now but a bit nearer to the station and in between the Grays branch line and the main line. I did a Google maps screenshot and marked where it was, but realised I can't post an image here. I've yet to manage to find a photo of that box at Upminster. Found a few of the other box he worked at Purfleet. Another one long since demolished. Yep! For the 11 year old me back then, driving that Class 302 was a great moment. Funny thing is, no one at school believed me!

Well I certainly believe you and an interesting and impressive story. I reckon the 302 would be a great seller and I heard (how true, I don't know), but the manufacturers couldn't get licenced for the LT stock. I'm going to google the signal box and hopefully get more info it and hopefully might even model it. Thanks again. Lee

Hi Lee hope you're doing OK mate. Firstly the station canopy looks great mate however if you're going to put a canopy on the other platform I would just build it to the same length as the first, just my opinion. Overall mate it looks great to me. Atb Andy

I think it all looks really good.. one idea, my friend. What about dropping down 2 extra rails between the platforms. To copy station safety derailing bars. Also, greeny white bird poo on top of buildings with a few birds hanging around. The XL Bully lovely dogs, I had dogs, I love weimaraner's. My friend had a cross rotty boxer full male and looked like some XL's. The problem was other male dogs. If one growled at him, he went mad on them very stupid dog but fast as anything with lock jaw, bad combo. The government will let you keep your lovely dog but sadly may ask you to muzzle him. All the best.

Hi James (I assume James by the user name). A very nice and interesting comment, thanks for this. Also thanks for sharing the info on your friend's dogs, sounds lovely. Those 2 rails you mentioned, where exacltly do they go? And would they be rife at Upminster? If so please tell me where because I'll look for them and whack them on the model in the appropriate place. Thanks in advance, Lee

@leewhall2504 I don't know actually if that station or indeed every station have them or had them in the past, but you must know what I mean. If you look at train photage on a main line their's extra tracks, 6 instead of 4 for a twin line station platform area. Maybe it is outdated now. But Google Maps will tell you if your layout is based on the present day. I just think it gives it more interest to the eye and don't see modelers using them much. All the best, Lee. From James

Hello Dave. Thanks for this message mate, I really appreciate it big time. Well I took Kye (the American XL Bully) to the vets for a health check and he was really healthy and weighed in at 8st 1lb! Lol. I'm in the process of getting him registered under the 'Dangerous Dogs Act' but just making sure his details are spot on. How you bern Dave? Always love hearing from you mate. Sorry it's taken a while to get back to you, only just seen this. Anyway, how are you mate? Lee

Hi Lee - On the dog front we have a Cava Poo and she is very friendly but I am sure if something upset her she could turn. The issue I see it is when big dogs are used as status symbols by the so called hard men who have no interest in taking responsibilty for them and owners like yourself suffer as do innocent dogs who get tarred with the same brush . I hope you make it to GETS and I note there is a KZitemr meet up at 11am on balcony 1 so that might be the oppotunity to meet up. I like the canopy and it does give some nice low down shots , a second canopy would look good and I dont think it will spoil the the low down shot but my only concern is would a full length canopy be a view blocker . Although if you are modelling Upminster then should you be true to the real station ? I have found some times you can get a little overwhelmed by one area of the layout so maybe a move to another side of the layout and then come back to the station area. Cheers Kev

Hello Kev. Your dog sounds absolutely lovely. The problem I have with my one is he is not only an American XL Bully, but he has a 'Juggernaut' bloodline, which means he's an XXL version. Shame though because he loves running around with dogs and playing in the forest, but since this has happened, I don't let him off the lead because everyone gets scared (real shame). Anyway, GETS. Yes my plans are still on to go, unless something comes up last minute. Thanks for letting me know about the 11am meet on the first floor, I don't have Facebook or anything else, so I never know half the things happening, so thanks for this and I'll see you there. I think your right about the other canopy, it has to happen and yes, I personally think I've come this far with Upminster, there's no point in cutting corners. I am however, stepping back from that part of the layout and starting a new project. The rest of the layout is all blank baseboards so quite exciting. Thanks as always Kev. See you on the 14th. Lee

It’s too easy to blanket ban a breed . My dog loves her mate a German Shepherd who is 4 times her size but doesn’t like a happy small one . I think balcony 1 is on the first floor but might suss it out before 11am . If we miss it how about a fall back of meeting at ground floor food& drink area at midday. I’ve taken up my station to redo the platforms and looking for a new station building plus accessories which I will look for at GETS . Keep safe …….Cheers Kev

Kev, I'd be more than happy to see you ground floor at midday and have a catch up. You say about your dog being best mates with a german shepard, my Bully has a best mate over the forest that is also a german shepherd called 'Buddy' and he absolutely loves running around with him, but unfortunately he can't do that no more because other dog owners get really paranoid at Kye (my bully) going near them. It's so sad. Anyway Kev, I'll defo see you on the 14th (even if I do a tanoy message) lol.

Definitely owner I would add the extra canopy. It will look good but very hard to work ,clean around. Unless you build it in away you can lift it of. Try using metal rod for legs ( b and q sell thin Roding).

9 ай бұрын
Definitely gets a thumbs up from me with it being down to the owner. Yes your right, I forgot that B&Q do all sorts of different metals and maybe I'll get something, brilliant suggestion. This other canopy has to go ahead, you're definitely right there, It looks weird without one. The question I'm facing now is, do I do I do one the same lengh? Or the full length like the real thing? Full lenght blocks trains out a bit, but prototypical, an equal length shows the trains but not prototypical. What do you reckon? Thanks for this. Lee

I would make the length with a bit of card. And just support it a the right height with a bit of wood. Just to get an idea. But what ever you make in the end. Make sure it’s removable

I think the canopy looks good but you have to do the other side too. I need to ask the lamps on the platform are they too high? As for the dog . I had 2 staffs and they were both as soft as s..t . Why because I was boss. It's down too the owner mate . Oh yeah I'm from Essex know upminster station well . Looks good.

Brilliant comment. Thanks for this. Yes, my dogs know I'm boss too and proves the point when you see their behaviour. Right as for canopies, I'm with you on this one and defo need to do the other side or it'll look weird. The lamps are too high? There's an interesting question, I actually set the height against the footbridge height to how they actually are on the station. Maybe the footbridge is not scale? Not actually sure lol. And I may have some figures for your platforms the caveat is "MAY" your about 20 years out of my era and you will have to paint them yourself, but they are a bit good I’m told.
