have a a6000 right now that I'm considering swapping out for an a6300 for 4k and have been looking at the 17-50 sigma for a month now. Happy to see how well it does with the fotodiox. best part of the 17-50 on an crop sensor is it gives that 24-70mm range that full frame shooters love so much for video/film. Thanks for the review. You've made my decision much easier now! :)

Hi, I have Viltrox II, A6000 and Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 I cannot get fast focus on the A6000 body. I am think of upgrading to the A6300 because you are able to get fast autofocus, a few questions please, which setting did you make on the A6300 to work well with the Sigma 17-50mm lens? ALso is the autofocus accurate? I appreciate a response.
@DLoPhoto

Yes, the A6000 does not have the hybrid autofocus of the A6300/A6500, A7ii and A7Rii. On the A6300, you set the AF system to phase detect (not contrast). The AF modes available are single shot and continuous, AF areas available are flexible spot, wide and center. Af is fast and accurate.

hi, Sorry for the late reply. I was on vacation for a week and hadn't checked for comments. The Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 works very well with the MC-11 and has never locked up on me. I just tried again at different focal lengths and apertures and in single shot and continuous AF modes and it works very well. Even though the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 is not officially on the "MC-11 compatible" list, I definitely feel it works better than the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-f4 Contemporary (which IS offically on the MC-11 compatible list). Additionally, if you are only planning to get the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 to use with the A6300, the Fotodiox and Viltrox adapters really do work the same and offer the same functionality as the MC-11 for less than $100 for each of those adapters.

+dlomus1 thanks for sharing your findings! That's great news! It's crazy the officially supported lens doesn't perform 100 times better than than the unsupported lens. I have the 17-50 and I use it on my canon 60d and adapted to BMPCC, so I'm glad it'll now work on my new a6300. I'm tempted to get Sony glass but I hate their focus by wire design. I guess a big drawback to the sigma 17-50 is the loud motor. Anyways, I really appreciate the detailed response. I bet this video will become very popular once it rises in the Google rankings.

Hi, it's me again. I know this has been a while for you. Do you remember how the MC11 adapter on the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 functions and behave? Sigma does said they have full functionality with the 17-70 f2.8-4, but I personally like the constant F2.8 better. so just want to see if I should go this route or get Viltrox speedbooster with a canon lens. thank you for your time
@DLoPhoto
7 жыл бұрын
Note that the Sigma 17-50mm is made for crop sensors already. You would not use the focal reducer for crop lenses. You use the focal reducer to convert full frame lens to have full frame field of view on a crop sensor. If you are looking to get the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8, the regular Viltrox pro EF-NEX II adapter (without focal reducer) works well. Note that it does not give eye auto focus or lock on tracking modes. Please also note that I don't really shoot video much so all my findings are for photo shooting. Some quick tests with video show that they don't autofocus well with video but still allows exposure control but manual focus. The Sigma 17-70 f2.8-f4 only worked with Sigma MC-11 on the A6300,. It did not work at all with the Viltrox adapter. Hope that helps.

Do you know if the lens OS functioned while in video mode? Does the lens ever "crash" the camera? I'm looking for something reliable for manual focus video.
@rsmith02
6 жыл бұрын
Answer to my question is that the OS does function with the MC-11. The camera locks up from time to time in photo mode and just needs a quick reset. So far it's been okay for video. Main problem is a bright flash when opening up the aperture in video mode. It goes all the way to 2.8 for an instant and then to the chosen aperture. Supported lenses (at least the Sigma 30mm 1.4 Art) don't do this.

Thanks for the review. I think any alternative options to having to pay the knee-buckling price of Sony lenses. Just to be clear, you have Sigma lenses with a CANON mount and are putting it on the Sigma MC-11 adapter, right? That offers the best performance, right? Or are you using sigma lenses with a SIGMA mount and putting them on the Sigma MC-11 adapter? And optical stabilization works on the Sigma lenses, right? If this is true, this would be awesome!!! P.S. No idea why Sony doesn't license Sigma some of the technical know-how to build some lenses in the always popular 17-50 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8. I mean, a lot more people would probably by Sony cameras if there were more lenses available.

Thank you!II I saw another review where the reviewer said that NON-compatible lenses actually work BETTER than compatible lenses because you can select phase detect only (instead of hybrid AF) with the NON-COMPATIBLE LENSES. Thus, he said that AF is faster with NON-compatible lenses. Any thoughts on this since you have both a compatible (17-70) and a NON-compatible (17-50)
@DLoPhoto
8 жыл бұрын
yes, when comparing these 2 lenses, even though the Sigma 17-70mm C is on the Sigma MC-11 compatible list with all the auto-focus modes, I feel it does not focus as well as the 17-50mm f2.8 especially in low light. Another advantage of the "non-compatible" 17-50mm also works well with the cheaper Viltrox and Fotodiox adapters while the 17-70 C completely craps out and locks up with the cheaper adapters.
@heysalsaguy
8 жыл бұрын
Thanks again for the explanation and the insight. I really appreciate it. so it looks like the way to go might be the cheaper adapter and the NON-compatible sigma for Canon (and / or Canon) lenses. I guess the drawback with NON-compatible is that you won't get the eye-autofocus and the facial recognition features. While the benefits are that you will get full time phase detection autorfocus (at least with a6300 and A7R II, don't know about other models) and you won't have as many lockups. Someone else said that the metabones IV adapter locks up with compatible canon lenses, while Tony Northrup seemed to imply he got MORE lockups with the MC-11. he also said the metabones adapter had better sharpness - particularly in the corners - than the sigma mc-11 did wwhen using the canon 16-35 on an a7 series camera (not sure if a7 II or a7s, or a7r series). Thanks again. Really appreciate all your experimenting with this.

Personally, I recommend the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 over the 17-70 f2.8-f4 Contemporary. The 17-50 fully works with fotodiox, viltrox and mc-11 adapters (good AF and image stabilization) while 17-70 C only works with MC-11. I found found autofocus faster and more accurate with the sigma 17-50 over the 17-70. I don't know if the 17-70 had any firmware updates since I made this video but I had since sold the 17-70.
