First thing I did when the plane touched down on American soil was shed a few tears. (Had a hard time over seas) ... Desert Storm and two tours in Afghanistan, I was missing home. To be honest, first thing I did when I left the airport/base was to find a burger joint and get a bacon cheese burger with fries .... MY GOD ... how GOOD that was. Two years, mostly on MRE's ..... give me fast food any day.

Years ago a co-worker was talking about her husband after he came back from Vietnam. I remember when my older brother came back from over seas for his 2 weeks and him and a couple of his army buddies wanted to go out so I offered to be their DD so they could turn up and not have to worry about driving. I was 19 or 20 and some places weren’t going to let me in but after knowing why I was there they all let me in as long as I didn’t drink. Had a blast that night .

Billy, thank you for your service, brother. I was in the Army for six years and got out 28 years ago. I was there in Panama surrounding the chopper when we took Noriega and served in operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. One of the first things that I wanted to do was to see the girl that I was seeing before I went to the Gulf. That was disappointing because I come back to find that she wasn't my girl anymore. So, the next things to check off my list were a huge steak and lots of beer. I'll not lie. It was tough transitioning back to the States. I had changed a lot. I was used to being on alert constantly. I felt naked without my M16 with me all the time. I even had a panicky moment when I woke up that first morning back and I didn't immediately find my weapon with me. I was used to being around much smaller groups of people, but I knew that if I didn't force myself to get out and be around larger groups I might never be able to make the transition. I stayed in several months after my return from the Gulf and then transitioned out. Returning home was something else. Everybody wanted to know everything about what I'd seen and done in the last six years since they'd seen me. Of course, I was asked by a few, mostly younger people and always civilians if I'd ever killed anybody. I just learned to change the subject. What's the use in talking about such things with those who'd never be able to understand. Like you, though, I never lost my sense of humor. I did, however, develop a low tolerance for bs that caused many who'd known the old me to think I'd grown meaner. Back in the old Army we were just used to putting everything out there and up front. Often times, we could be blunt as hell and most civilians just weren't used to that I reckon. It seems that a lot of that has changed over the years with this trending towards PC and all. I just want to wish you a happy Memorial Day and thanks for the song.

When I got back from Nam, I got off the plane (in uniform) and just breathed the air...for about 5 minutes... and then headed to the next connection in the SF International Airport when a guy walked up to me and spit in my face and called me a baby killer. I kicked his ass up one side of the concourse and down the other. When the Airport Police got there and cuffed me, asking what happened... when I told them, they stopped, took of the cuffs, cuffed him and took him away. That stuck with me for a long time. What was even worse was a young girl ran up to me and grabbed me crying "I thought you were dead!". I didn't know the girl. When I was able to get a word in, I told her I wasn't Michael, I was Dan. She looked at me for the first real time and collapsed to the ground in tears. Her Mom and Dad were with her and her Dad told me that I was the spitting image, the twin almost of her boyfriend who was shot and killed in Nam. He showed me the boys photo, I swear I thought it was me. That hit me harder than all of the other stuff I ever went through...thinking about that poor girl. The War is still with me...I'll never be rid of it.

it took me all most 3 years to see the v.a. for mental health. I spent 3 years drinking my nights away, only sleep I got is when I passed out. felt allways like I was on edge. I had an old man lived across the street I grew up with like a grandfather ( he was a vet him self) after him standing there for 3 years with his front door light on to let me know he was home and awake to talk. he came over one day and told me that I was slowly committing suicide by drinking my self to death and told me either go get help or just get it over ( I know it sounds cruel but its what I needed) he took me to the V.A. and stood beside me as I sobered up. he is the one who introduced to my wife before he passed. I lost a grandfather but he gave me my wife. from one support to another support. god bless the angels out there that give us strength to do the things we need to.

It's maturity and discipline a guy who goes into the military for four years grows different than a guy who goes to college for four years. I served in the Navy escorting Kuwaiti flagged tankers in the Persian gulf, Iran and Iraq were at war and our ships were hitting mines and were hit with missiles. This was before desert shield/ desert storm. When you serve on a ship, that ship is considered to be a sovereign nation it is America so there was no need to kiss the ground. I recall landing in Benidorm, Spain and our ship could not port there and we came in one of the ship's boats and there were some American tourists on the dock and one of them a nice lady, said to us, "Howdy boys" it was like saying we are safe now because the Navy and Marines are here. It felt really good.

One of the truest statements I ever came across was in a magazine article. A female (I think a psychologist) said that going to combat was like going through a one way door. Once you go through, you can't come back that way. Everyone I know, myself included, had so many family members telling us we were so changed. My wife told me she didn't know me anymore, that's how much she said I changed. We worked through it, though. Kudos and salutations to all former and current service members, and thank you for your service.
