The species Lipidium virginicum is popularly called in Brazil mentruz, mastruço and watercress. In other countries it can be known as mastuerzo, lentejuela, pepper grass, virginia pepperweed, virginia peppercrass, among other names.
Lepidium virginicum is a medicinal and food plant, as it is used to treat some health problems and also in the preparation of salads or stews.
The plant has some medicinal properties already confirmed by scientific studies, but not all therapeutic actions reported by the population were confirmed, as they still need more research.
The tea of this herb has a mild and sweet taste, while the flavor in salads is spicy and very similar to that of some other plants of the botanical family Brassicaceae, such as watercress (Nasturtium officinale) and mustard (Brassica juncea).
