I just saw Jon Anderson last night. He's 76 and still sounding great with a lot of energy. He is on a small tour with about 15 high school musicians to give them a shot at doing stuff on that level, very cool. This is one of my very favorite Yes songs.

Certainly one of the best Yes songs ever, from a very crowded field of superb Yes songs. I saw them play this live in 2003, and it was wonderful. We used _Wondrous Stories_ as our processional, transcribed for solo [small] harp. She was just playing background music before the actual ceremony, relaxed, playing w/o any need for sheet music. As she began _Wondrous Stories_, suddenly she became serious with 100% concentration on the sheet music. A memorable experience.

The biggest insult was YES was finally inducted in the Hall of Fame after Chris Squire passed away. It wasn't so much that but this is one of the greatest band ever yet it took decades before the hacks at the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame inducted YES. What a joke that organization. People will be listening to YES couple of hundred years from now just like how people are listening to Beethoven, Mozart, Bach at present day. And while 95% of the music in the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame would be forgotten.

Brilliant song, and great reaction. If this song doesn’t touch an emotional nerve better check your pulse you might already be gone. Amazing that both this song and Awaken are on the same album Going for the One which some Yes ‘purists’ who don’t like anything after Relayer whine about. I loved what you said in your Awaken reaction (paraphrasing from my sloppy memory): This sounds like the music they play in Heaven.
@adriangoodrich4306

Well This Yes fan thought the album after Relayer (my favourite Yes album, by a whisker) was - as near as makes no difference - just as superb. If anyone does not feel the emotion in "Turn of the Century", and "Soon" - IMO two of the most beautiful and emotional pieces of prog rock music ever written (TOTS is perhaps THE most beautiful? Certainly of what I have listened to) - what IS wrong with you?
@benoitdesmarais2948
3 жыл бұрын
I do think Close to The Edge and Relayer are at the very top of their discography, and Going For The One was only a deception to me cause of the summits reached before. Turn is a beautiful song, Awaken is quite the piece of work (the 2nd part in particular) - BUT, the rest of the album is far from that level of excellence: Parrallels is maybe the worst song Squire ever wrote, Wonderous Stories is pretty (but Anderson could write that sort of song in his sleep as somebody else once wrote), and the title track was a sort of attempt to "rock'n roll" (on the 76 tour, they encored with the Beatles' I'm Down), but the excellence of Howe's riff is rapidly lost in trying to make it more "complicated". And Tormato and Drama are not horrible either.

The Yes "Purists". I saw Yes in 2017. I long ago determined that the band Yes is more than it's band members. It is it's own Entity, it's own Spirit. The band members past and present are a part of the Yes Family. In 2017 I had a meet and greet with the band and ran this idea past Geoff Downes. He said that's Exactly It. He said 300 years from now Yes will still be touring and performing Yes Songs, because it has its Own Life.
@LetsDoEntertainment

You confuse me. Awaken is your favorite YES song? Awaken is my favorite. But I'm a 50-something white boy who grew up and into this music over the last 40 or so years. When I first heard the band, I was 13 years old. It was the age of disco, 1977. The #1 song in the country that year was "Tonight's the Night" by Rod Stewart. Other top artists that year included Englebert Humperdinck, Barbara Streisand, Helen Reddy, Kenny Rogers, Stevie Wonder, and the ubiquitous Bee Gees. Fleetwood Mac had released Rumours which dominated the album chart that year. The Eagles Hotel California, Boston's first album came out, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Heart, Foreigner, for God's sake KISS had 3 albums in the year-end Top 100 chart! ... and YES released "Going for the One." My dad got a copy. I listened to it, with headphones, laying the length of an Orange loveseat in our hip, green-rugged den with the only light coming from a red lava lamp and the glow of dad's stereo. By the time the final track of side two played, I was floating above the sofa. I played side two three more times. Then I burned my disco records. Literally. Melted them in the heat of the wood stove, then hung them on the wall in my room.

My only complaint about this piece of heaven is that it's too short. I went speaker shopping in 1978 in Buffalo and brought this on vinyl to play in the shop. Hey man, loved your reaction, I remember as a teenager back in 1977 waiting for the album "Going for the One" to be released and rushing home, putting it on the turntable and being transported to Heaven for what seemed like eternity. Have adored the album ever since, like you and many Yes fans I immediately fell in love with "Turn of the Century", it has lived in my heart ever since. Likewise "Awaken" which is my favorite piece of all time, would recommend the remaining tracks on the album: Going for the one, Parallels and Wonderous Stories, the latter I suggest you listen to next as like Turn of the Century is one of their most gorgeous slow songs. Enjoy and Best Wishes
