This poem evokes the seaside bravery of young people flinging themselves off a stone pier on the west coast of Ireland. Groarke admired the wholehearted abandon with which swimmers hit the foamy waters below, but said her bravery was in writing about the idea, and would be "far too chicken" to ever try it.
Groarke read this poem during an interview in 2019. "Pier" is from her collection, Spindrift, about which poet Eamon Grennan, in The Irish Times, wrote, "The poems in Spindrift serve as a reminder that in the strongest poetry there’s always the sound of someone confronting with courage and craft the outer and inner worlds of hazardous matter."
Sarah Luckadoo reads an introduction to offer context and background on the poet and the poem.
