Don't increase the length of your steps, folks - this will exaggerate the heel strike and increase the impact forces. And high impact forces lead to all kinds of issues in the feet, knees, hips and spine. A healthy walking gait comes from a rapid cadence with a short stride and a gentle, rolling heel strike.

Thank you for this, i have been doing this for two weeks and i can already start to feel my core muscles strengthening. It's also easier to stand and sit up straight now!

I have used yoga breathing very successfully during my walks. I count 2 steps for the inhale through the nose and then count 4 steps for the exhale, puckering my lips to control the outflow and using the lip resistance to control the outflow. Almost as if you were whistling. Slowly releasing your breathe this way actually stimulates the creation of red blood cells, which of course carry the oxygen we need for strenuous exercise. Also, I walk with a military posture, that is, shoulder's rotated back and up slightly, and chest out. It makes you look bigger than you are and this is of course the effect a marching soldier would want in order to intimidate the enemy. "these guys are really big and powerful, just look at the way they walk."

nice strategy. my only caution would be to be careful using a military posture because you might get rib flare. cheers.
Oh my gosh! I just found your videos and you are amazing! This particular topic, “blew me away”...as last summer, while on a beautiful trail, I actually did envision that I was running, even though I was walking in almost slow motion (haha) and my belly looked incredibly toned by doing so by autumn! The reason I thought to do this is because I once saw a research study that said that just by “thinking your abs thin”, you can create tonation. I.e. in bed at night...visualize. That too, is what I did and I seriously looked pretty great in a bikini at 50 without doing one sit up! :)

i hope you don't mind my 2cents, but absolutely!!! I discovered that many years ago doing zen meditation and belly breathing! I went from flabby abs to concave abs with very minimal exercise! I was stunned!

turn around and walk backwards for 20 or so paces. alternate b/w walking forward using all these techniques and then walking backwards. You will find that your heart rate takes off and you get a hell of a workout even though you are still just "'walking". Athletes like basketball players, football and soccer players, badmington and tennis, ping pong players, all are walking and even running backwards just as much as they are going forward. And don't forget salsa dancers.

Very nice also to teach country skiing with the dynamic work of the arms swinging and the counteracting natural rotation of the trunk and the pelvis.

fantastic! i've had difficulty with poor posture all my life and have been using hand held weights and forcing my shoulders back while drawing in my abs and engaging butt/thighs/legs for 30 years; this routine is gentle, relaxing, beneficial (seems to me, intuitively) and provides immediate results. i'm going to try out the whole program. bravo!!

That seems like a very healthy workout because it seems to be good for you, the deep breathing is healthy for your lungs, the walking is healthy for your heart, legs, and glutes, the arm movement seems like it’s healthy for your arms, shoulders, back, and chest and that the faster you do this the better workout you’ll get

Thank you so much for this video. It confirms and adds to what I have started doing recently. I wanted to be able to strengthen the core through daily activities without a yoga mat, to help with my swim. Your method reassured me that it is, indeed, possible to strengthen the core by walking if we pay attention to think about and activate particular muscle groups. Great encouragement when we are banned from indoor gyms for refusing to be the big pharmas' guinea pigs.

I’m right handed and I still don’t get the counter rotation of the upper and lower body. I always start to walk with my right foot as much as I hate it because I feel better when I make the switch to walk left foot/ right foot which makes me feel better but it’s not long lasting. Any advice?

Thanks for the video! When you say breathe deeply, you mean breath in expanding abdomen and out retracting it? Cause it could be the other way round and it is very different on the pelvic floor.
