the major problem that many guitarists encounter is about UNFINISHED MAPLE FRETBOARD.it's a huge PIA,some claim that orange oil is better than lemon oil, some say that orange and lemon oil are the same since mineral oil is the essential element of the two products, many talk about Murphy's oil soap, other point directions towards Ernie Ball Wonder Wipes, then there are those who recognize tru oil as the ultimate solution...what's the best method to clean unfinished maple board and condition it?

He said it is not recommended because of the lacquer finnish. The wood is already sealed, a humid cloth would do the work... If you have an unfinished bright scale, I suppose you could clean it with lemon oil

I do what Scott Grove does. He made tons of videos on how to take care of your guitar and you don't need any kind of oil. Water works just fine. Just make sure you rub it really good to the water doesn't stay in there. And as for the Lemon Oil. It's a conditioner not made for cleaning like they said in this video. You clean the fretboard first then use this and rub it in until it's dry. But I've never used it. But I know how it's suppose to be used.

Nice video! I'm only thinking that is it possible to over use lemon oil? I play guitar and I change strings to my number one guitar like once a week. Some resources say that lemon oil should be used only once or twice per year. How long time do you mean when you say once in a while? And what happens if lemon oil is over used (if that is possible)?

***** Most lemon oil isn't really oil from lemons, it's lemon-scented mineral oil. It works well on rosewood fretboards. Real lemon oil is acidic and should not be used on wood. It will dry it out.

I don't understand WHY you SHOULDN'T use (boiled/purified) linseed oil ? It's strange because everyone has a different opinion (it's like... well you know) on how to clean and condition a fingerboard. Fender says this (actually they are less restrictive than Warwick): "It is a good idea to give your fretboard a “drink” of lemon oil, boiled linseed oil or other non silicone-based wood/furniture oil, periodically to preserve its integrity and natural beauty."

I have used linseed oil on my rosewood boards for years- never had an issue at all- but like other oils- people can misuse it. First, oils are not a cleaner, you should clean the wood with a slightly damp cloth or naptha first, then use the oil. And only use the oil maybe once or twice a year- I respectfully disagree that it should be used "every string change". Also, people use too much oil, then let it sink in, or marinate- this is usually not necessary. Rub it in, wipe it off. Linseed Oil is different, in that it dries to a thin finish, which is usually the reason people say it should not be used. My experience has been, the wood looks better and stays that way longer than when I used lemon oil.

dmedicFF I agree, people use way too much oil, they let it sit for too long. I think doing it more than once or twice a year (some do every 2 weeks or so!) may cause problems. Linseed oil has been used to protect wood for thousands of years, I don't see why you couldn't use it on a Warwick bass. Maybe they have a contract with Dunlop. BTW, do you use raw or boiled linseed oil ?

ChurchillCigar Agreed- and do you wanna know how I know about the effects of too much oiling? I had a fretboard that I oiled regularly, and it became fragile because I oiled it every string change (Lemon Oil). Small chips of rosewood were coming off near the frets. Even when using Lemon Oil sparingly, I never felt it did much for the wood compared to Linseed. If your board is Clean prior to using the Linseed Oil, it stays that way because of the thin finish- dirt and gunk doesn't have a chance to get into the pores of the wood, and it's easier to clean at string changes. I use the Boiled Linseed Oil, but either one is fine for fret boards.

ChurchillCigar just a bit more of a reply (kinda passionate about this topic)- at string change with a board protected with Linseed Oil, I clean the board with a 100% cotton cloth dampened with hot water. Very Damp- well wrung out. I rub the board and frets like crazy. This lifts dirt off and also buffs it to a rich look, and shines the frets too. Also- you may notice a comment below where someone said if you use linseed oil your board will burst into flames. I'm sure he's joking- but there is a danger with rags soaked in linseed oil spontaneously combusting. Rinse them out with cold water and hang them outside to dry, or run them through the washer

groovydjs "Use lemon oil and watch those frets pop out like popping corn." You could also try rubbing french fries on your fretboard, that too would oil it up and would leave your guitar with a lovely McDonald's odour. If it's that dry then your room is incorrectly humidified or the guitar maker used some seriously awful wood...or how about playing your guitar more, your fingers have a ton of oil in them and will do the same job if you bothered to play the damn thing instead of farting about with gimmicks.
