I've physically read The Hobbit, LOTR and Silmarillion several times over the years, and have listened to the Unabridged audio books every few years. I still pick up new insights and things I never caught before every time. Truly love Tolkien's work and depth of knowledge. Keep up the good work.

This is a true story, believe me or not: When I was a child, about seven or eight years old, an "elf" tried to take me away. It looked like the classic Peter Pan mythology, green outfit, pointed ears, elf hat, elf shoes, etc, and it floated around the room, almost dancing against a backdrop of swirling glowing clouds. It had pale skin and spoke, almost singing..."Come with me little boy, come with me." Now, here's the really weird part... Natural I told my parents what I experienced. My Mother of course just passed it off as a childhood dream or fantasy, nothing more. But, my Father didn't. While I was telling my parents this story and Mom was dismissing it, Dad looked really terrified. Mom pressed him as to why he looked that way. Then Dad revealed a secret. He hadn't told anyone before but, when he was eight years old, the same thing happened to him. Elf, green outfit, "Come with me little boy, come with me." How could Dad and I dream the exact same weird fantasy? Unless...it actually happened.

Interesting story, thanks for sharing. My mind goes to alien abductions which are commonly multi-generational and where the abductor can appear in a disarming recognizable form. This is all speculative, but it's where my thoughts went to. From my reading, I think there is a correlation between faerie, elf, deity encounters and what are considered alien encounters

Player 2: All female and scantily clad, but you didn't ask for that haha Me: Hahaha I know but that makes what is about to happen even better. You hear sleigh bells. Something's on the roof. Player 3: ... Player 1: I... I draw my swo- Me: Coming down through the inn's chimney. A large dwarf like red coated man standing near seven feet tall comes out and glares at you. So I got this historian friend. He comes to me every once in a while and rattles off some obscure ancient history trivia. I don't exactly remember the details so this is one of those "bro trust me" stories since I can't point at the actual historical figures but there was this roman general that was investigating what the hell elves were. He had heard of these fair haired tall men of the woods who attacked caravans. So the general talked with tribes all around and asked them "who are these elves and where do they live, who do they descend from?" The answer he was always given "I don't know. They attack us too. They live in that direction. I don't know they just showed up one day." And the area they all pointed to was modern day Belgium. So the general goes there and actually finds what he identifies as "fair haired large men" who the other tribes call elves. When he could establish communication he asked them "where do you hail from?" And their response was "I don't know we just showed up one day." And then my friend pointed out something. These elves just appeared one day right around near modern day Belgium. Belgium is a country full of "Fair haired tall people". Belgians are elves.

I've always been suspicious of elves. My Grandfather would often tell me tales about the Fae and how they couldn't be trusted and how they lived in a world that overlapped our own. How they would challenge people to contests that were worded in such a vague way, that even if they lost in the spirit of the challenge, by their words they won.

Fillipino mythology has their own version of elves too, they have the dalaketnon (dark elves), engkantos, tamawos etc. Have you heard of Biringan? (The alleged/fabled home of the Engkanto)

Love hearing your vulnerabilities! Are dwarfs the same as elves? I’m from the far east, originally, and I was so surprised to hear that the Norwegian trolls are very much the same as the ones I hear growing up? Could they be real? How do two far away countries with relatively no relation can have creatures with the same characteristics and behaviors?

After speaking English for 15+ years I can’t believe I never realized it only has one word for elves in both the Santa and the Tolkien sense. This is so wild to me, since in my native language we have tonttu for Santa’s elves and haltia for the Tolkien kind. In mythology these terms can refer to the same creatures, but you would never use tonttu for the Tolkien elves, that sound straight up blasphemous!😭
