The Dalai Lama's office asked me to record a video message as part of a tribute video for his upcoming 85th birthday, because he's been involved in three of my initiatives over the past fifteen years - including writing an Open Letter to Youth as part of Film Your Issue.
But I barely know him. What could I add? And that was the point, I realized.
That he doesn't know me - yet he's been there to add his voice for humanity's dignity and respect and well-being. He has been there for me over and over - joining me to oppose the War in Iraq, encourage and empower youth voices, support the message that each person's unique individuality contributes to this world.
As I say to him in the video: he is as divinely-lit a human as walks the earth.
I also needed to include a few video moments of divine inspiration from Cashel Gardner, one of my cherish Everyone Matters Ambassadors. Cashel was born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and can't move, breathe, eat or even talk on his own. But his indomitable spirit triumphs. You will hear part of the video message he recorded for Everyone Matters Day a few years ago, speaking through a digital synthesizer. His inspiring words for humanity resonated in my head as I thought of His Holiness.
Happy, healthy 85th birthday to His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
