It was also in there for 15 excruciating minutes and when the emt got there they were legitimately more worried about her swallowing my finger than the seizure. The only cruise I've ever taken happened when I was 16 years old. We sailed from Miami to San Juan, Puerto Rico, then to St. Thomas and then St. Martin before sailing back to Miami. On the day we were supposed to arrive in San Juan, a guest had a medical emergency that the ship's facility couldn't treat. His appendix needed to be removed and was about to rupture. Even though we were only 4 hours sailing distance from San Juan, they had to do an emergency helicopter landing on the top deck of the ship, in order to fly the teenager to San Juan's hospital. Due to the speed we were traveling, the captain had to very swiftly slow down and turn the ship to allow the helicopter to land. My brother and I had been on the top deck while they closed the back pool and then set up the heli-pad. Our parents were in the casino, so we ran straight there to tell them what was happening. When I reached our parents at the casino bar, I was telling them about what had happened when the entire ship banked starboard. Two legs of my Mom's chair lifted off the ground. Several glasses at the bar went flying off the bar and crashing onto the ground. My Dad reached across the bar counter and helped hold more glasses back so they wouldn't fall. There was a collective gasp from the entire room when this happened. The captain had announced the medical emergency and that they were closing the top deck, so everyone on board knew there was an emergency requiring a medicvac to San Juan. However, due to the difficulty the chopper had with landing on the ship at the speed we were traveling, there was no warning about the sharp turn the captain needed to take. So, everyone was taken by surprise. After the ship returned level, the captain came on the loudspeaker and apologized then explained why the ship had banked starboard so abruptly. The teen was flown with his father to San Juan where they remained the rest of the week while he recovered in the hospital and was discharched near the end of the cruise. Thankfully, he was okay. In the meantime, the whole experience certainly added some excitement to our 3rd day in a row out at sea... it is a long cruise from Miami to San Juan.

I was forced to keep working. I was galley crew and I pleaded with the chef manager to allow me to go to medical. I only got a chance only if I agreed to return for my 12 hour shift. I was fit for duty, but I was still sick: I was nauseous, tired, fever, and had diarrhea. The doc thought I was just hungover because I recently turned 21. Several other crew members got sick and they got the same treatment; nothing. Tw ok things to Remember: Take care of yourself, and the statute of limitations is much shorter in maritime law.

Taking that exact route on the Icon of the Seas (June 15, 2024). Did you guys do anything specific? What were Kitts & Thomas like?

I live in st. Kitts. It's beautiful, have a beach day, and shopping at port zante is overpriced.

So you have a helipad, I assume in a very severe case you could get a medevac helicopter out there (assuming you're near enough to land)?
@dawkutt
Жыл бұрын
Probably, yes They can also be used to airlift people to safety in the event of a disaster and to deliver supplies to a stranded ship (poop cruise) I'm sure there's many more reasons to have one that's just what I can think of

It's probably not really a helipad but more of a hoist point. Helicopters are more for deadly emergencies, often times close to port a Coast Guard small boat will pick them up from the ship out at sea.

i work for a cruise company and let me tell you... BOOK A TRAVEL HEALTH INSURANCE because a simple unplanned stop off-oute is VERY expensive. depends on the size of the port but even for a smaller port it can be starting from 15.000€, i've seen the invoices we've had to send out to passengers who had medical emergencies that required extensive care on land so they had to be disembarked... if you still don't book health insurance for traveling, at least bring pills for sea sickness and save yourself the stress and money of buying some on the ship if you end up needing them

Love how you are not going to address the unfortunate fact that this individual will likely be billed sooo aggressively in that PR hospital that they'll barely be able to afford to leave the country to return home 😅

This would have been nice to know cause I was on a royal Caribbean cruise when I was a teen and sat down on a stair and got a pretty deep cut from the corner piece but didn't get it checked out cause I didn't want to pay

I have a feeding tube stoma. It got infected last time I cruised. Doctor onboard gave me antibiotics and didn’t even charge me! Then I was back a day later as I’d slices my finger open. Same. Stitched it without charging me! Although he made me promise to leave him alone for the rest of my holiday 😂

Isn't it cheaper to have the passenger collected by air without rerouting the ship? Since it probably costs way more to reroute the vessel than to have a helicopter fly in to collect the patient

What is the flying range of a helicopter? Sure it might be able to make it out to a ship but can it get back????? “Helicopters nowadays fly an average distance of anywhere between 250 to 400 miles on a single tank. There are, however, better-equipped helicopters, such as certain military helicopters, that can reach up to 1200 miles.”

You didn't cover the price for non insurance people. Don't forget when you use the doctor you might have to spend like $200 out of pocket if there is no health insurance.
