Plants lack vitamin A (as retinol), D3, K2, B12, choline, taurine, phosphorus, selenium, heme iron, sat fat and chlolesterol. We also don't have the enzymes or bacteria to deal with fibre and anti nutrients (unlike cows). Veganism is a deficient diet and cannot be done long term - eventually you will run out of stored vitamin A, B12, D3 etc.

I have been vegan for 3 years and have also reversed many of my nutrient deficiencies. The cashew milk I drink is fortified with B12 and I supplement B12 on the side weekly. B12 is not exclusive in animal products because it is not produced by animals, it is actually a bacteria found in water which is then transferred to the animal. Since we live in a modern world where everything is sanitized, there is a lack of B12. Many physicians will support supplementing B12, regardless of your diet. Fibre is incredibly important and necessary for human health, we don’t have the physiology of a carnivorous lion, our physiology is highly comparable to a herbivore. Instead of worrying about protein, iron & B12, we should be worrying about fibre intake, especially soluble fibre. Heme iron, saturated fat and cholesterol are the very things that cause many problems represented by the traditional western diet. Cholesterol is naturally produced by the body and there is no factual evidence showing the consumption of dietary cholesterol having positive effects, if anything it increases the risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Heme iron is linked to so many different issues, including faster aging, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, etc. If done properly while including healthy fats, plant based proteins, carbohydrates, etc., a vegan lifestyle is very sustainable, arguably more sustainable than a typical meat based diet, both on an individual and planetary level.

@@SabrinaKoundakjian - Fortified B12 is artificial and has a different chemical structure vs natural B12, making it more stable and cheaper to produce. However, it is toxic and more difficult to absorb. - Humans are not capable of making B12 from any other source. We MUST get it from meat. - Fibre is not needed in our diet, in fact high fibre worsens constipation. Our digestive system is similar to that of meat eaters (cats, dogs etc) - we dont have the multiple stomachs and cellulase enzymes required to process plants. - cholesterol is essential and must be taken from food. It is required to build our cell membranes, and the amount produced by the liver is not enough. There is NO link between cholesterol level and heart disease. (recent study with 130,000 heart disease patients,

You are still drawing on stored Vitamin A, B, D, K2 etc back from when you ate meat. It is usually the 5 year mark when vegans quit. By this time, 80% of people quit, and 90% of the 80% cite it is due to serious health problems they developed as a result of veganism.

Grass fed beef is the most environmental friendly way to eat. You kill 1 animal to feed many people for months. Production of grains, on the other hand, require destruction of animal habitat and use of pesticides. During harvesting thousands of rats and birds are cut up.. Eating meat kills 1 large animal, while eating plants kills thousands of small animals.
