I think it's also personality types. Cristine is pretty well known for being a introvert and has said multiple times that she often feels awkward. Ben is the opposite, much more extroverted (at least that's the impression I get from how they present themselves and talk about themselves) so it makes sense that in an environment without as much editing and which is much less structured, Ben would take the lead while Cristine takes more of a back seat.

This podcast was so weird to listen to as I'm listening to this more than a year later. They keep saying that the quarantine is for 2 weeks but when in reality I'm still stuck here in at home a year later. the quarantine is still on here in the Philippines and the situation is actually getting worst as we are getting hit with the second wave of Covid. I haven't gone to medschool (online classes) , to the club , the church or even gone home to meet my parents in over a year :-( I hope everyone is doing well and hopefully things get back to normal soon.

I'm watching this from Italy 🇮🇹, The situation here it's pretty bad we have almost 30k cases and 2k dead people; we used to say the same things like it's just a flu, it only affects the elderly. But it's not just a flu and by staying at home you could really help many many people, those with a weak immune system, older people, and you help the virus from stop spreading so quickly; our hospitals are overcrowded, hospitals are running out of space in intensive care units and sometimes they are forced to choose who to treat based on their chances to survive; and there are also young people who are attached to respiratory systems, and the economy is suffering too. So let's all make this small sacrifice which on a larger scale means a lot. Every day at 12:00 we clap our hands from our windows/ balcony to thank the doctors and nurses, in the afternoon everyday we sing the national anthem and other songs all over the country, like a national flash mob to cheer us up. We have online classes, exams, online university graduation and stuff. It's gonna be hard especially for those who don't have a stable job or work on their own. We can beat this virus, it's gonna be boring, you'll go a bit mad, but stay at home.

Okay I took a really awesome phonetics course (I’m a French major) and I learned that Quebecois French uses ‘old’ French and merges some English with it. So when someone quebecois speaking with a French person might say like an ancient word that noooobody uses and also the slang yeah. But definitely the whole “we’re better than you” thing is another factor. I mean even with metropolitan French (Parisian French the French most people would study) there’s prejudice against southern French accents bc of the way they pronounce words. I feel it stems from l’académie française just bc France has historical always been so patriotic and standardizing their language was very important for the country. Anyway yeah I love y’all and it’s so cool hearing crisitine talk about French immersion school
@lucieirl

It’s so interesting! My mum is french from the south (small town near nice) and when she was 10 a French Canadian girl started at her school and they all thought it was funny how she used words like “chariot” (?) for car and generally just slang differences. Then when my mum moved to Paris in her 20s it was time for her to be laughed at by all the Parisians for her dialect, despite the fact she never had a strong southern accent. The french are definitely strong in language preservation and proper ness though. Don’t they have laws about what % radio music has be french artists so it doesn’t become Americanised??

I'm about 18 minutes into the video and I just wanted to pause to add my two cents to what Cristine was saying about how bad living alone and this isolation can do to a person. Because I do live alone in a tiny apartment in Korea, one of the first big epicenters of the disease after China, and this country just shut down once they realized COVID 19 was spreading like crazy. I didn't teach classes from the end of February until the second week of April, so over 6 weeks. I didn't go into work the entire month of March and the first week of April. I just went back to work this week on the 6th (students are expected to go back to public school classes on the 16th). At first, I was super excited about staying home, because, yaay introvert, woohoo. But by the end of my iso I felt like I was going to go insane. I had gone 17 days without seeing another person, speaking to another person, and I don't think I had even spoken aloud the last two days before I finally went back to work. It was a very dangerous place to be, mentally, but with the government constantly sending messages of "a new case in this neighbourhood, a new case in this neighbourhood, make sure to stay home, maintain social distancing until such and such day" it creates this feeling of paranoia that you CAN"T leave the house. Even though it's perfectly fine TO leave the house, you can't feel like you can because, iunno, maybe someone will sneeze on you and then you'll die. Anyway, that's just my two cents.

I was really happy to see you mention students. I’ve felt very isolated and tearful over the past few weeks because all my plans I’ve made to get through grad school and into medical school are, well, destroyed. My class is currently in the hardest semester of our program, and they are almost entirely based on lab work and group work. Now we’re over halfway through the semester and I don’t think I can finish these classes online. I can’t learn this way, especially in classes like this where we all lean on each other. All my study buddies have gone into “every man for themselves” mode. No one else seems to be having the problems I have and I feel dumb. I’ve emailed my profs asking about my options and I have gotten no response. If I don’t pass my classes with Bs at least, I will not be eligible to teach for a year, and I can’t get paid. Im crying a lot and it’s been rough. I feel for everyone going through severe stressors right now. It takes a toll on your mental health.

I'm a senior in University at the moment and, while next quarter has shifted to remote learning, my commencement ceremony has also been cancelled. I understand why since it's a lot of people in a relatively small space, but it's disheartening since a lot of us were looking forward to it. Also, as a criminology major, I greatly enjoyed that brief discussion on the release of prisoners over in Iran.

Animal crossing is a relaxing game that is set in real time and has no real end goal. You are a villager who gets to collect bugs, fish, fossils, clothes, and furniture items. In animal crossing new horizon it is set on a deserted island where you get to customize the island in almost every way. You get to chat with the other animal villagers on your island travel to other random islands and collect resources. Plus you can upgrade your house and the other stores that are on your island. Some new things they have added to new horizons is nook miles which is another form of currency that lets you unlock different things, plus it introduces crafting that has never been in previous games, and the ability to change the landscape however you want. I’ve played other animal crossing games and can already tell I’m going to fall in love with new horizons once it comes out. It would be super cool to see some of my favorite you tubers play this game.

I’m just starting this podcast and maybe you go in details or wathevee, but your point of view about some good changes and innovation about working from home because of this is really interesting because, being from Chile, a not super deveploment country, my point of view about this is totally different. Like, here working from home sometimes can lead to poor working conditions because the employer don’t let the workers to have free hours and we have such bad laws about it and the stupid goverment is approving more bad laws that leave employees in a bad place. And other thing is the online class, because some students are gonna have to quit their careers, at least for this year because some people just don’t have a computer at home, or acces to internet, or the internet that some people have is so shitty that the online class don’t work for them. So, in conclussion, is was just super intersting listening the experience of people living in a “1st world” versus what we have to live now (even though Chile is was considered one of the more develop countries in the latin america area, so I can’t imagine what others countries are going through rigth now)

I'm glad you two touched base on Mental Health issues. I've been struggling with Social Anxiety (and anxiety in general) since my early teens, and part of my routine of combating that is my job - customer service phones - which has been closed, and just generally running errands around town and saying hello to people. It's made a _huge_ difference in my mental health not to do these things. My anxiety is sky high, I'm not doing anything with my days despite wanting to other than panicking. It's just nice to hear someone acknowledge that. I think it helps immensely with the isolation this is causing. And I am just as grateful that we have the internet to boot. There are silver linings to all this, despite all the chaos going on outside. I need to remember that.
