Radio in the 1960s and 70s in KC was WHB (World's Happiest Broadcasters) 71 on your dial .
The top disc jockey for years was Johnny Dolan (Rollin' with Dolan), who normally worked the afternoon shift, but seemed to fill in just about any time day or night
For about a four or five-year period in the mid to late 1960s and 70s.
My Brother, Terry and I would write down the 40-Star Survey when they played the top 40 songs in Kansas City every Friday afternoon.
Another memorable WHB personality was Phil Jay with his "Uncle Phil's Filthy Files."
I can also remember Jeff Roberts and Rock Robbins.
Both Phil Jay and Jeff Roberts returned to the station when it tried to return to its roots and cash in on the oldies craze in the 1980s.
Just reminiscing about the radio stations back in the day.....WHB with it's trendsetting formats and features. They were the first to play top 40 countdowns if I remember correctly. DJ's that I remember were Phil Jay, Russ Spooner (and of course) CHICKEN MAN (and the adventures of)!!!
"Live At 55", Listen to win, and the singing call letters "Yours Truly WHB....in Kaaaansas City" plus all the hits of the day. World's Happiest Broadcasters!
Johnny Dolan? Plus, I remember the racing "contest" they use to have featuring DJ's "racing" against one another and if you picked the winner you got a prize.
WHB 'platter pole' Every Saturday night the top 40 songs. Sat on the front porch listening to the music. Those were wonderful days
Phil Jay is still out there working the mike. At a friend's 60th BD party last fall and Phil Jay was the DJ.
