Objectively it’s not slow, it’s not a number you’ll see posted on what should be their direct competition, FWD or RWD, all having faster 0-60 but tenths of a second comparable 1/4 mile times? it’s the sensation of the car not having any power where you expect a surge, it’s a buzz kill. I own one and it plagues me to no end, but you keep the engine on the boil and it’s plenty fast enough for its purpose - that’s where people can’t seem to see through their biases, they can’t see that the platform was purpose built and think “fast” is only measured by straight line acceleration. In every other avenue of “performance” it’s eons ahead of hot hatches in the same price range and will always keep Mazda on their toes and keep Honda fans thirsting for a remake of the S2K or Integra Type R. I’ve also seen Alfa’s conceptual resurrection of the GTV as a direct competitor.. won’t that be interesting

Conflating the 1.4TSI supercharged/turbocharged Polo GTI engine with the Polo range that won Wheels CoTY is silly (your comments were not qualified, so one cannot truly know if that's what you meant). The 1.2TSI engine has some timing chain issues, and the dry clutch DSG gearbox ain't great on the reliability front, but there are plenty of high mileage Mk5 Polos still getting about and they are tonnes nicer to drive than the Mazda2/Yaris/Jazz equivalents. Their refinement superiority is marked.
@zaccy12341

Spot on, was going to say the same thing, love the channel but the polo was at least 10 years ahead of anything in its class, 7 speed dsg verse Yaris’s ancient 4 speed, refined 1.2 turbo verse unrefined and noisy natural aspirated 1.3 and 1.5, I know this as my mum has owned hers since she bought it in new in 2011, yes if you don’t service or maintain your polo it’s more likely to have issues than the old tin shed that is the Yaris, but if you have like my mum you have 13 years of fault free driving in something way way nicer than a 2011 Yaris, Mazda 2 good to drive which is what she had previous but also like the Yaris compared to the polo it was tinny, unrefined, crap on the freeway and a rubbish interior, I could go on 🤣

Agreed. I experienced both ends of this. That model Polo GTI was a great car to drive when new, which is all that Wheels could fairly assess on. Yes, the engine and DSG were unreliable pieces of crap, as I found out, repeatedly. But i don't think it's fair to blame Wheels for not marking the car down for this on the basis of testing it when new. You could, quite fairly, critique the motoring press at the time for being very slow to the story of VW's terrible reliability once the issues emerged, but that's in my view a separate issue.

Drove a CRZ a long time ago and it was surprisingly fun to drive. Not much slower than the CRX either. The i3 aged really well and it is a fantastic city car. Not a hot hatch or sports car at all but a fun to drive in a very weird way. Very easy to live with on a day to day basis where you just want to get in it and go do your business.

There was something exciting about the golf Mark seven. It was called the emissions scandal!

The more conversations you guys have the better. How about a segment on cheeky cars, I will leave that to your imagination. Rare cars in Aus. Muscle cars and how they stack up against todays average cars.

Should do a hidden gems episode for example and you will probably disagree but the second gen diesel X-Trail and Renault koleos are a bargain and reliable as hell as they have a standard torque converter auto and not the trash CVT that the petrols have. But yeah maybe just highlight a bunch of reliable gems potentially some BMWs that aren't a live grenade or something like fiat 500/panda with a manual gearbox and the 2 cylinder can be picked up for a song and are reliable as hell and the other advantage of the two cylinder is it's chain driven. Infact manual fiats in general can be had really cheap and are pretty damn reliable. But yeah anyway kinda like bargain or fairly safe bets when it comes to reliably questionable car brands.

In their xtrail review they said stay away from the diesel, though. So no agreement there.

How about a REVOTED Cars of the Year? Which models did better than the original winner???

No idea now the 6R Polo managed COTY - they’re pretty sh1t… i deal with so many with chronic rust and rotten sills. Would rather have a Mazda 2, Jazz, anything really. The CRZ is a genuinely lovely car and was well ahead of it’s time - a modern CRX and a really good looking car. Great video guys - really. Enjoying these videos

2018. The new look Camry would have been a better car of the year. Sold by the millions and reliability and resale value. Maybe a bit vanilla to win.

another good one. full of insight and a great guide for a used car buyer. however…….. hate country music with a passion? you’re ignoring the fact that it has the word music in its title and its performers are playing actual instruments. an appalling take on a fine genre sir!

Toyota didn't win car of the year because they haven't made an interesting car since the Twin Cam corollas of the late 80s. They made reliable but extremely boring cars.

Would you guys be able to review a Mitsubishi Magna? One of the all time classic sedans, and you still see them around, although I assume most of them have been beat to shit with 400,000 KM's by this point.
