I was a victim of hitting my 'easy' runs hard as well. And this constantly left me frustrated cos I wasn't running the times I thought I should. After July last year I started running in Zone 2 for roughly 80% of the time, within 8 weeks I finally dipped under 20 minutes for 5 k and 40 minutes for 10 k.

I am following your Sub-4 marathon 12 weeks plan, actually first time I force myself to run such easy for many times in the schedule. Now it's 3 week into the program and I start liking it much more, the feeling is good, I recover more quickly than before. I am having time target not KM targets and set myself more or less in the middle of the suggested pace rate. My max heart rate is 170 and run my EASY run around 120 bpm. If I want to hit the lower part of the range (which for E runs is 5:40/km) then the average bpm increase to 125-130. The intervals for me are around 155-160 not more which would mean zone 4 to 5 (the so called 'orange' zone'). Hope to see benefits mid of march simulating a full marathon

This is totally me: no distinct pace variation between recovery/foundation/long run. My heart rate yesterday during a long, easy run was a surprise: 150! Any slower and I'd have been walking! But, running into winds of up to 60km/hour may have played a part..?

How many 'easy runs' should one run before a marathon or ultra-marathon?

Ok, you can run these easy runs too hard (and too often). Can you also run them too slow and how slow would that be relative to e.g. a race time?

Hi Coach Parry, I'm new to the group and I'm struggling to load my strength programme. I need help. I'm also an elderly runner who would like to run the Comrades for the first time this year. I haven't yet qualified

To keep my runs in HR zone 2- I have to run at a pace that is so slow that it is physically difficult to maintain the required pace. My 1/2 pace is 5.30. Running at 6.15 is physically difficult as it feels unnatural

Is it a good rule of thumb to keep your heart rate on easy runs to less than 180 - your age? Are easy runs meant to be slower or same pace as recovery runs and or are they the same thing?

Easy runs should be 20 to 30 seconds per km faster than a recovery run and 5 to 10 secs per km faster than your Long Run. Hope that helps, Matt

That's MAF style. This guy's recommending even easier than that. 70-75% HRmax

Well, the basics make sense but the ways to gage rates, OMG so freaking confusing.

What is the best way to work out my maximum heart rate or my aerobic threshold so I more accurately determine my heart rate for easy runs? Do I need to go to a lab? If I alter my max heart rate my 5 bpm it means 75% changes by 4 bpm, even this small amount would change the pace I would run.
