"Every two minutes [...] you would just get disconnected." No, actually, they made this worse. It's related to EasyAntiCheat. You see, up until 1.04 or so, FromSoft's servers only checked if you were logged into EAC properly upon going online from the main menu; after that, it assumed you were all good, and let you carry on. Well, clever monkeys realized that you didn't have to actually receive a valid signature back from EAC's validation system, so they'd change the configuration .json file in the game's install directory to - the forum where someone posted the method publicly that I saw, anyway - "poopoo peepee". I'm not joking. Anyway, in 1.04.1 they added EAC's heartbeat system, where it checks for an actual connection to the correct, authentic EAC validation server... Every two minutes, on the dot. The problem is, this check isn't perfect - and if you get any amount of packet loss, or too much latency, or mild hiccups for that check, and EAC throws a fit and boots you out. Fortunately, this does mean that EAC is keeping incompetent, garbage cheaters out of the online system - but at a harsh cost to normal, legitimate users who don't know what Cheat Engine is to begin with. EAC also causes some significant optimization problems, and mid- to low-cost rigs simply can't play the game with it enabled. The Seamless Co-Op mod ignores EAC (it has to, to function), allowing my friends with toasters to enjoy a bit of jolly cooperation for once. Heck, the no-EAC version even works better on Linux through Proton and other methods, because EAC just sucks.

Too many factors that lower the potential invasion pool. No solo invasions, the people who summon that you actually can invade beat the game once and shelf it maybe till DLC, awful netcode even worse than previous games, no covenants/pvp rewards, bad invasion ranges (geographically not level) why if I invade Leyndell does it not also match me into the invasions in the sewers for example, lower play count from 6 to 4 don't know how this happened just stupid and now of course the coop mod which is really cool I even tried it myself with randomiser with friends but it does lower the already pretty much dead invasions. Even if it was, that isn't proof it's bad. Reusing something isn't inherently bad, I shouldn't have to say this. Hammers and flails aren't useless in either PvE or PvP. All of them do massive posture damage in PvE, and there's plenty of good options for PvP, though their paired moveset sucks. But that's fucking irrelevant to laziness, otherwise you have to call all the games lazy because of balance issues. Daggers are the best option for crits. Bows aren't the same as DS2. While I don't have the data, it's actually pretty obvious from experience that the BHS and RoB users are mostly phantoms. What even is the use of BHS in a legacy dungeon, for an invader, in a 1v1? @@Corrupted Incentive? PvP is a unique element while also being the actual endgame, or anything approaching that. The problem in ER is that the only way to approach the once natural organic invasion as a host is to taunt. Taunting is simply not a good way to play the game because the rate of invasions is nonsensical. Only skilled duos can get through a legacy dungeon with it on because the invasions are unrelenting. Single players usually turn it off for the same reason, as getting invaded by the same person several times in a row probably destroys the once mandatory anonymity and freshness of a new invader in a new spot. I know this because I've invaded and found exactly those circumstances. It's an invader rush for no reason, making the use of the item bizarrely niche. Now, you didn't say a thing about taunting. But if this is what you meant by not wanting to be invaded as a host, I understand. No need to bring BHS or RoB up, taunting is bad enough as a mechanic. If you get invaded by the same troll as you spend 45min in a legacy dungeon... yeah, not exactly "fun". Invaders can also get exasperated if they invade the same skilled-enough, great runed host in succession. These things are not exactly "fun" for most people. If you're seeing this below meta, used by invaders, I'm surprised. I have helped hosts wherein someone with Mohg's invaded. They trust low poise and the L2 and... it gets them killed. The arcane isn't high enough to punish rushing in at lower levels, as far as my experience goes. Meta though? Yeah, people are gonna die. Vyke's, however, is special in this regard. At lower levels, I have co-invaded and fought against "Vyke" reds and when they know what they're doing it's a very punishing thing to do mistakes against. Well-timed L2s will easily melt people, even with talismans to increase focus. Dual Vyke's are usually morons though, skill-wise, and actually easier to face against, ironically enough. PvP is always about player killing , you don't want to feel like a punching bag for the sake of someone else's experience and of PvP experience . But yes verdict is : if you're an invader , you are not supposed to kill the host , halt their progress and make them slow down . I have a character I used to invade in Caelid with. I'd go to Fort Faroth, invade there, and repeatedly get instant invasions 6-7 times in a row, exhaust them all on timers (or other invaders taking the slot), and warp to another Caelid region, such as next to the Dragon Communion cathedral, and do the same. I invade at RL80/+13, the most common bracket for the region, though I've experimented with other ranges. I now get one invasion in the entire region of Caelid, per half-hour. That's only during peak gametime, i.e. 6-7pm CST, when most of America is off-work and off-school and has free time to play. In off-hours, I get one an hour - or none whatsoever - in the whole region. The worst part is, half the time, it's not even a normal host, it's some jackwagon in Lenne's Rise that thinks he can AFK there and that I don't have a macro for the Radagon's Hammer moveset swap to get in there and kill him. It just sucks.

Unfortunately for me i got a little burnt out after beating my first play through in a month after 200 hours, i took like a 2 month break and came back to absolutely dead invasions. I managed to completely miss the peak of the game i was so excited to invade in for years to come, now its as good as dead for the time being. I’ve been invading a lot recently on ps5 and it’s really a shit show. You get the same people over and over again. The structure of it just doesn’t make sense and there’s no way to dwindle down the player pool to queue up a game because of the ginormous map. It’s literally Liurnia and Limgrave most of the time for me. Shunning grounds at 125 works most of the time as well. I have a 240 build that gets a decent amount of action still so I can’t say much there. What doesn’t help are the incredibly corny RoB guys or Moonveil guys who aren’t fun to play against ever and throw in some Stars of Ruin. The player base that I’ve encountered are just boring to fight. You’ll come across the occasional matchup that was great win or lose but those are few and far between. Everyone is just super sweaty. We desperately need covenants or a way to queue regardless of location or an actual arena. I love the game but there’s definitely room for expansion and extending its lifespan for the niche PvP goers.

In addition to the valid points made in this video, I also think damage values are part of the decline. Elden Ring has given us easy access to the highest damage numbers in the series. The skill floor to kill your opponent is just landing 2 or 3 Ashes of War, and that's it. Unlike DS3, spacing a lot less of a requirement for PvP, since it's so easy to make up for it by simply outdamaging your opponent. The only people who are really going to worry about spacing are souls vets who are purposely limiting themselves to make the fight last longer. The most fun I've had in dueling is a medium Shield Bash build that really only does 300 damage per hit. It takes much longer to kill anyone, but at least I'm able to learn how my opponent fights, and then actually adapt to it, as opposed to hitting a single Ash and deleting half their health. I don't blame the new players for using the biggest numbers, because why wouldn't you? We really need some kind of survivability buff, or else PvP may go cold entirely.

This is literally the reason I quit the game entirely. I love the pvp. Even obsessed with it for a while (among my 600hrs game time, 200 is basically learning the game and 400 to defeat Elden Beast with a ton of invading and duels) I love poison. So I use dual Antspur (no bleed cos it's not poison), Venomous Fangs and Serpentbone Blade. But as you might guess, my non-1/2 shot build just doesn't fit with the meta, so I get creamed a lot by the same builds over and over. I've even included Stitcher with Pebble against meta builds cos I'm not Gud enough. It's my first Souls pvp. I love it when I fight against non-meta builds because, win or lose, it's really fun. It feels like Miyazaki is getting closer and closer to "Souls" being a single player game as a core intention with invasions being the punishment for coop. The increasing parameters for invasions they add with every subsequent game for whatever reason in addition to how much more spread out the playerbase is due to how much larger the game is kind of just cut invasions off at the knees and its only going to get worse as the playerbase continues to reduce, theyd need to either A) remove one/some of the invasion requirements which I doubt theyll do because normies are already weeping over how they dont want to interact with the pvp or opening up the ability to invade into anywhere from anywhere which is maybe more plausible atleast on paper but knowing From they most likely have the most backwards ass system for matchmaking that will completely remove this as a possibility, duels are frankly just more boring due to horrendous balancing which, the series is no stranger to but I dont remember it ever being THIS wild, enabling almost every single build being capable of near one-shotting you off almost any hit. @ates423
2 жыл бұрын
I wholeheartedly agree. It’s absolutely ridiculous how they killed invasions and how outdated their matchmaking system is for such a large map. Where is the wex dust system for this game? Another thing to note is the replay value is ass, I just hopped on ds2 and got my ass whooped for trying to speed pass enemies to get to the boss about several times. Meanwhile, on torrent you can literally zoom past 80% of the game without any sort of engagement or obstacle whatsoever. To top it off, new playthroughs are tedious as fuck, nothing changes on new game+ and since it’s open world all you’re doing is hunting down flask shards before starting online. Which leads to the online. Password summons are so absolutely busted that this is the only souls games where people will beat the entire game without having learned a single damn mechanic about the game. The lack of covenants, the player limits, the connection issues, no solo invasions, taunters tongue taking priority, bad summoning pool system, and the shitty ass matchmaking in general makes it nearly impossible to get coop or invasions. The fact that you have to travel from cave to cave to invade, and there’s certain graces in the same region that will send summon signs is ridiculous. I’m on pc, with characters at each respective level bracket and I am literally sitting for 10-15 minutes, spamming signs and fingers going from grace to grace to find matchmaking, just to get connection errored. Which is sad because I checked one day, there was 40,000 active players yet I couldn’t get summoned once to malenia at lvl 125, nor could I invade at leyndell capital at lvl 70-90. To top it off, the pvp is trash, it’s literally l2 simulator, no spacing, super low skill ceiling, and super pandered towards noobs with the high damage values, one mistake and that’s it. All your builds will devolve to, “how can I make this attack hit reliably and do over 1.2k damage.” Its a boring as fuck meta, no satisfaction and reward. Atleast ds3 rewards you for having patience despite how passive the meta is. TL;DR terrible pvp, terrible matchmaking, and lack of online content. There’s a lot of stuff I missed which I’m honestly tired of talking about and I’m glad that Scott is listing most of my gripes about this game. The other souls games lasted for years in the pve and pvp scene, despite players experiencing burnout. Yet in this game people are already leaving and the online is already dying a few months in. I’m playing through ds2 again and I’m just now realizing how easy elden ring is. Like I know the starting areas and bosses, yet I still get my asswhooped for playing impatiently, not managing my stamina bar properly, healing at the right time, or dodging in the right place/direction. Which is what a souls game should be, you learn, adapt, and get rewarded for being good. This game rewards you for your build and that’s about it.

Elden Ring just straight up shouldn't have been open world. It kills replayability since you never engage with dungeons that you don't need for your build. From's current formula for the Souls games just doesn't translate very well to open world, and most of Elden Ring's issues can be attributed to that fact. DS2 was rushed as hell and the game still slaps. Imagine how much better Elden Ring would be if it were more in line with their usual formula.

I don't know about others but I have a decent PC and I can play every other FromSoftware Game and even Grand Theft Auto V, Rust, Arma 3, etc. just fine... but in Elden Ring the only area in the game where I'm not dropped down to 12fps and below when set to online (and some areas even lose frames badly offline) is Moghwyn Dynasty blood area.... and it's even lower frames if I'm online and it kicks you to the main menu and forces you to restart the game to go back online if your frames are too low. Restarting the game also takes forever on this PC. In some PvE areas, and in every single PvP situation (except in Mogh area) I am destined to just die 100% of the time because I'm in 2 FPS (and risking a kick to main menu) unless I survive for a second by using Bloodhound's Step (responsibly of course, mostly to avoid vets, and cheese like Rivers of Blood and Moonveil)... Anyway, of course I need a PC upgrade but it's just kind of not possible for me right now and I am sure at least a few others might have the same dilemma... I'm sad because I really want to Coop and PvP in Elden Ring it's so fun. I just don't understand how I can get normal frames and gameplay in the other FromSoftware games, and even in the Mogh area in Elden Ring itself (which they just go into the boss fight anyway), but the rest of the game is this bad for me, on top of that the graphics settings are so limited so it's unfixable and I tried every combination of possible things I could for a long time. I actually fixed all enemies being invisible and gained a very tiny little bit of FPS by moving the game to an external hard drive, but installing new drivers and changing PC settings, and a bunch of other things did nothing. My point is, is there anyone having low FPS on decent PCs preventing them from online play or is it just a me problem? Funny how it kicks offline and forces game restart if you have low fps for no reason, but those with shit internet that t-pose you into the shadow realm with Rivers of Blood don't get kicked to main menu... Also I do agree with the video and a lot of the comments. There should be covenants, more max player limit, and wex dust system...

The most frustrating thing is that balancing the PVP isn't really difficult, its just that fromsoft doesn't want to do it... - Give bloodhound step a slightly increased range and add a 4-5 seconds cooldown after it so that it still gets you out of hot situations but people can still chase you -Decrease the wideness of the moonveil WA (or reduce the tracking) so that people can easily dodge it by simply moving to the side making it so that it still a great wakeup for roll catching but you can't spam it like a bot and now will start considering the other WA of moonveil... -ROB WA now takes 4÷ of the players health per WA slash (28% of health in total). Which would make the weapon still amazing but now if you see a bot spamming it you know he will be lower on health after it and he will be easier to take out... -Fingerprint greatshield (and most greatshields for that matter) will take double the stamina damage and will now eat away at your stamina while you hold them up so that you don't turtle like a scrub, making it so that if you want to run a greatshield with Vykes spear, you now have to have stupid amounts of stamina or trading with you will be that much more beneficial... None of what I said is hard, From just doesn't want to do it...

The game's pvp will never function well without an authentic wex dust mechanic. In fact, I found myself often wishing that there was a coop wex dust mechanic too. And I sincerely hope they just didn't have covenants finished in time for launch and they will show up in a dlc, because it's beyond me why they didn't include them. Finally the restrictive player limit is confusing, as I would have thought they'd have taken the player limit in the opposite direction. With such big open areas, I thought it was am opportunity for more coop and invaders. But nope. Lastly, a lot of things the seamless coop mod does should have been in the game. While I understand and agree with maintaining the classic coop formula in the classic dungeons and maybe caves/catacombs, the open world should have been unrestricted in the base game and allowed for everyone to mount horses, etc. In a game that should have inspired coop, it's instead ground into the dirt by inconvenience.

What I think Elden Ring needs: - Add seamless co-op - Delete invasions on the open fields (it's just looking for each other anyways and there's no fun at it at all) - Amplify invasions in legacy dungeons, bring back solo invasions too (that way, designated areas will become PvP zones like in the previous titles so it'll be easy to find a match for everyone looking. Basically this would apply to every area where Torrent is unusable by default). - Make a distinctive difference between recusants and bloody fingers (make recusants sort of a bounty hunter covenant. If you invade, you have a random target assigned, that could be anyone, the host, one of his phantoms, or even a red invader). - Bring back covenants with appropriate rewards (the basics are already layed out. Recusants can work easily. Bloody fingers are self-explanatory but they could've get stronger ties to the whole Mohgwyn dynasty. The Great Jar could make an excellent duel-based covenant leader like the Everlasting Dragon in Dark Souls 1. The best covenant ever, being the Gravelords could see a resurrection as Godwyn Faithful who basically infect other players world with stronger enemies and hosts must invade them to rid their world of said dangers. Maybe the Moundmakers could see a return as Madness Servants, a wildcard covenant that basically can go after anyone, with the covenant leader being the Three Fingers. The possibilities are endless). All these covenants should get uniqe rewards for completing their tasks that they can trade at their leader for new weapons and armor. This ofc will never happen. But I think, is a fun thought. This might be enough to make PvP interesting again

Well, one addition I'd like to make: Another reason the game's multiplayer is drying out so quickly is that Elden Ring is far too generous with its weapons, ashes of war and certain talismans ~ Example: In DS 1,2 and 3 you were bound to replay the game one or two times at least since +2 versions of rings, certain weapons and multiple other items were locked into NG+ and NG+2 ~ In Elden Ring, every item is obtainable in one single playthrough so there's no reason to go into higher NGs - except for the last two achievements of Ranni/Frenzy ending, because the 5 Elden Lord endings are just recolours ala Mass Effect 3 Prepatched, have absolutly no impact to the story because even the subtitles are the same in all 5 of them - well, except the "Age of ???" I smell such great potential for DLCs in such a big world - I just hope some things will change over time because this game deserves better than what the 70% of toxic playerbase do to it's multiplayer system.

I still get very regular invasions, but I invade early game (level 1-15). The only major downside is that in about 80% of worlds I am fighting overleveled phantoms which are not scaled down properly. The main thing for me personally which causes it to be stale is that when you used to invade, there was always a chance that you'd come across a lone host or a dedicated gank squad, or anything in between. When you are invading knowing that you are going to be outnumbered by necessity, it takes away that element of wonder and surprise that anything could be in that world.

My issue is yea, the bloodhound step being spammed by 6 or 7 players out of every 10 i fought, but it was a lot more running away to spam spells as there are so many viable ones now, the common occurrence of healing in duels, the op weapons that kill you in 2 or 3 hits that are not even ultra weapons, and how quick fights go by. I don't define myself as a good PvP player but idk, felt more satisfying in DS3. Maybe I'm just stuck in the days where everyone ran a quality build of some sort. In duels this problem isn’t so bad, but if you invade then the combat will consist of almost entirely RoB spam, bloodhound step, seppuku, white masks and bull goat armour. It’s so boring. Additionally hosts are just toxic most time. You get T-bagged by gankers abusing the most broken shit because they are upset they got killed by a invader once. Part of the reason was having to go out of my way to get finger remedies every time I jumped off the same cliff trying to make a jump three times. The other reason was that I NEVER GOT INVADED. Was I leveling too slowly? Too quickly? Was it my weapon level? Was it the location? Who Knows! This game is just too big to not have Wex Dust. The shrine idea was neat, but the easiest option IMO would be to make it so that you can invade in the Roundtable Hold to invade anywhere. No need for new locations, no need to make a new model. I'm not a PvP hater at all, I've participated in it across all 3 Dark Souls games, but I truly think that in a game of ER's scale that it simply drags the experience down with its inclusion. Perhaps it's due to the outdated and poor inclusion, but from launch until now ER has felt like a SP/coop game- the lack of incentive for invasions, small player counts per world, no pvp covenants, simple access to one shots, higher overall levels, undodgeable magics, high stat cost weapons, and lack of simple two hit combos in the game with the craziest arsenal; all of this just makes it feel like they added PvP for the sake of it rather then trying to adapt it to how different this game is from typical Souls.

Ds2 still is the pvp king. There were pve covenants, dedicated arenas, wasn't a roll fest, magic could work in pvp pretty well. You could easily take a poopy weapon like a spoon and do decently well. Ds3 was good too with fight clubs. But once again Ds2 proves outside of bosses, that it is game with the longest longevity. I think ER has trouble with it because this is the first time they did pvp in 6 years. They might have missed some stuff.

It's because it's trash. Player damage potential is way to high. You can one-shot every boss in the game but two with the tools provided. You can make 1-shot builds no problem. They made no attempt to balance the game what-so-ever, and their utterly botched method of gate-keeping the areas of the world is the cause. The "JUST LEVEL VIG" meme is proof.

Most of those "way more players" are solo players. We know this is the case because that's how it was in literally all the other games. We can't invade those players, ergo there's less people to invade. Combine that with the other issues the game has and you've got a small SUCCESSFUL pool of targets. The cold hard truth is that From absolutely destroyed the multiplayer system. There's ZERO reason to not just have things go back to the Demons Souls, DS1, or DS2 (minus soul memory) era. The solution for future games is pretty straightforward- open up solos to invasions again (wow, you just made your eligible invasion targets EXPLODE with a single switch), make a Wex Dust-style system, fix level scaling for summoned phantoms so they're not stupidly OP, etc. The game's balance I personally think is fine. Yeah, you can get one-shot, but since you're only ever invading groups that's kind of necessary on your end since, even if nobody could one-shot, that group of 3 players are probably going to kill you just as fast in their R1-blender. And if we're talking about duels... well, let's just not talk about duels. Those obviously take a back seat to invasions or even arenas in Froms' eyes.

Old ds1 player, The main issue for eldenring from my point of view, is the dmg scaling. We have nearly same hp in eldenring as we had in ds1, yet the dmg of weapons and attacks are much higher. For ds1, in most cases, youd have to get a backstab to do 1000+ dmg. For eldenring, in most cases, you just have to hit your l2 to do 1500+ or outright oneshot. Maybe it's because we're mostly invaders here, but it seems like everyone's missing the main thing making invasions so slow. There is absolutely zero reason to participate in random co-op. No covenant rewards, lower rune gains, and you have to babysit a host for who knows how long it takes for him to find a boss. Most of the encounters are designed for a single player, so bringing phantoms along trivializes large sections of the game. Invaders are hated so much these days because they are, without exaggeration, the only challenging enemy in the game when you're playing with friends. So why would you ever summon randoms if it's just going to turn your cozy button-masher into an actual video game? I don't think co-opers give a shit about patches and updates, they're happy to spam rivers and moonveil for the rest of all time and I'm happy to keep walking into that blender. But there's a reason you only find summoning signs just outside the boss gate. Improving co-op will improve invasions. Simple as that.

_Agree with the PC connection:_ Is still terrible. I loved so much to do coop with random people in the souls games, but it's absolute pain in ER. _About fight clubs:_ Yes, I miss them a lot! Had some "fight clubby" moments in ER, too. But It's always fight the other red phantom and when one dies the host can summon the next. It's just not the same without the fighters waiting at the side and then jumping down into the arena. Where's the gesture spamming and the community fun in ER?! _PvP areas / covenants:_ I don't really miss that. Was always a huge pain to get through these zones, getting chased by 2 to 3 twinking invaders, while you're playing with a new character. The lacklustre online system: YES! That's what I called out FromSoft for on reddit already. They created a huge and fun open world in ER, but they didn't improve on the online part enough for this to work. I was really very hyped before the release to see what they did with the online and then got massively disappointed when I saw, there was very little improve and even a reduction in max player count in your world. _The patching:_ Yea, I see the trouble with the OP stuff not getting nerfed and not enough changes happening. But I don't think this would stop many people from playing. It would be neat, to have more frequent patches, but it is not that important in my opinion. I personally think the most important aspects of online slowing down so much is that it just doesn't work fine. Too little player count, constant disconnects and bad connectivity in general and an online system not ready for the huge open world are the biggest bummers by far (for me). --------------------------------------------------------------------- _What I would add to this list:_ Why the frick is there still this convoluted level and upgrade system for player brackets?! Why not just *create a good scaling system* and then have all players be able to play with each other. There's already one for summons with passwords. Why not improve on it and use this system for all summons and invaders?! This absolute pain and way more than it was in DS3. You have a huge open world and can go very different directions very early on. If you do a lot of exploring you automatically level much more, than someone playing more focussed. ER is just not as linear as DS3 was and this creates huge level and upgrade differences of players in zones. With the old bracket system, this means even less players to find! --------------------------------------------------------------------- In the past week I created two new characters trying to play through the game with as much summoning as possible (to also get invaded) and there's vast spaces, where I just CAN'T find anybody. With the first character I just played the game, I didn't skip around to collect tons of stuff, but just played the game in somewhat of a correct order. And in some places I wouldn't find summons in general while in other places I was on a totally wrong level / upgrade level when I checked internet. Created second character and strictly followed the suggested level from internet (which I think is a bit dumb, to have zones after Godrick to be +4 to +6 weapons, when you literally get a +8 gifted to you by an NPCs, right after the kill. But okay). And I got a few more coop options, but still many times, where I couldn't find any at all. Compared to DS3, when I did such a max coop and invasion run I had non stop summons and invasions. There were only very small zones, where you couldn't summon and basically never did you find no summon sign at all. Even years after game release. In ER I play like 80% solo, while trying my absolute hardest to get as much coop as possible. That's bringing me to the brink of shutting down the game. I had my solo experience already, now I want online chaos dialled to the max. Same goes for me, when I want to get summoned in these zones. I use internet to find the summon figures, activate them all and then plopp down my sign in the zone. And then I wait. And wait. And wait. I check again internet, if I'm really in the recommended level - yes I am - and I wait more. Maybe I get summoned after 10 minutes or more waiting in prime time. Only to get a terrible connection to the host and stuff happening with significant delay and an eventual disconnect (no, it's *not* my internet, I have VERY good connection in any other game and had way less trouble in DS3 than I have in ER). I mean, how is this fun? Of course people stop playing, when the online experience is pure pain with a thin sugar coat on top of it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Let's be honest: The online experience should have been way more similar to what the mod does with summons and players being able to ride on torrent, removing the forced disconnection after boss kill and instead refilling all the flasks for everyone after a boss kill and then have a good invasion system on top of that! I think the game was massively overhyped and it is NOT as much of a masterpiece as it was praised for. Too much technical trouble and the systems not clicking into each other as perfect as they did in previous titles creates a huge dent in the reputation. At least for me. I really hope FromSoft will massively improve on their online systems in future iterations or deliver upgrades to ER in the future. I really miss the online experience from DS3. (I have well over 1000 hours in DS3, played through the game countless times with new characters and engaging with coop, invasions, fight clubs and the community in general. I really really miss this in ER a lot!) I'm not sure if ER would have created a strong community on its own, if there hadn't been one already from the previous games. In my opinion the game is very fun to play through once and then you can shelf it, because there's not much replay value left. (I replay it, but I'm not happy with the experience, that's why I formed this opinion) Sry for wall of text. Thanks for anyone who took the time and read through everything.

The sad truth is that most of the community seems happy to let the PvP die. The #1 response I get from casual players when they hear the PvP is slowing down/dying is "Good" -- usually followed by a diatribe about how invaders are sadistic losers trying to ruin the game for everyone else. There was always some friction between the pure PvE and PvP crowds in previous titles, but I think with ER bringing in a much larger audience that's primarily PvE-focused, that tension has intensified like ten-fold.

Seriously. Plenty of good ideas for covenants. Redmane champions of Radhan Malenia's cleanrot valkyrie knights. These two can be focused into full on war in Caelid areas. Ranni's darkmoon sentinels. Could invade whenever people set foot in certain parts of Liurnia or Nokron/Nokstella. The bloody fingers of Mohg could be made into a full covenant as well as the recusant fingers. You could have something like Godwyn's deathless champions where you do what is basically gravelording from ds1. When you use a deathroot seed, another person's world is infested with undead where they usually aren't. Just like the distaters from gravelord convenant. You would have to find the infestor's sign, reverse invade and kill him to make the undead enemies stop spawning at various parts of the world. Frenzy flame convenant would be literally perfect for a Mound maker's variation. Literally invade anyone and kill anyone to include enemy NPCs. You can also be summoned to help someone to show that the gift of frenzy isn't bad. But you could also betray the person who summoned you. You could have guardians of gold or something. A sunlight bro equivalent. There's just too much that they simply didn't bother doing.

The way the game and invasion systems are structured just sorta makes it so the only people getting invaded are either people who want to be invaded (a large percentage of which are probably gankers), or people who are already dealing with the most annoying aspects of the co-op system (bad connections and no Torrent). That last bit in particular I think really cut down on potential invasions even before the seamless co-op mod, the overworld is obviously meant to be traversed on horseback and thus turning the horse off (which also means your limited flasks are going to be taxed by field enemies that are harder to just run away from) in co-op means people are going to mainly summon in dungeons/outside the boss doors - since only people with summons get invaded, people are very unlikely to just be walking around the overworld with randoms, and invading people who are summoning in front of a boss fog gate is useless, that narrows your invasion pool down to basically just gankers and people who are already handicapping themselves to run around and have fun with their friends, who are probably not going to be super excited about being invaded. I'm not sure exactly how I'd fix any of this - I considered the prospect of making it so fighting invaders is more rewarding, but 1. I can't think of anything that would be a good reward that already exists in the game (i.e. they'd need to create something new/exclusive, since stuff like rune arcs are easy to get by other means), and 2. idiots are already "invader farming" when the rewards are practically nothing (how many hours of AFKing does it take to equal like, five minutes of Palace Approach grinding?), so making the rewards actually worthwhile would just make that worse. I think some Farron/Aldrich-style "area defense" covenants that could invade you even if you're solo could have been a really interesting aspect to add to Elden Ring, especially with so many interesting factions in the lore - I could easily see a covenant of Haligtree defenders or Leyndell knights or something. As it stands, if you're not playing with friends, you're just never going to get invaded ever - I was invaded 0 times across 2 full playthroughs. I think taking some pages out of the co-op mod's book (specifically co-op horses and being able to rest at grace with summons) might make people more inclined to summon in the open world rather than just with a specific goal (dungeon clear/boss kill) in mind, which in turn would boost the invadable population. I've never been super involved in Fromsoft games' PvP, but even I can see it's in a pretty sad state here. also they gotta fix the pc netcode holy shit, i'm taking a break from the game and a big part of why is because like 7/10 times where i was helping someone with a boss i'd get booted back to my world before the fight ended.

They should've just limited invasions to dungeons and overworld structures. Leaning on fog gates caging hosts in and fighting. No one on either side wants to invade in an open field. Just remove that feature entirely and create fog gate airlocks for field bosses in co-op (or just make field bosses solo only). Or just let everyone ride on horseback and enhance how you can combat them. Maybe one hit melees knock you off your horse and projecticles damage only torrent until you get knocked off; then have torrent be on a 30 second cooldown and you can't summon him if you've been by someone on foot in the last X amount of time.

Scott, have you considered using the co-op mod FOR PvP? Seriously. It doesn't do shit for invasions, but for everything else my friends and I have had more fun with it. There's no need to re-summon if anyone dies. Including the host. So you can fight club...ish with a 4-player lobby to your hearts content, just constantly swapping out who's up. You can effectively 2v1 or 2v2! Again, if anyone dies then they just respawn at the Grace and sit on the side until one of the teams win. 4-Man FFA? You got it. Not looking like red jell-o without wasting a talisman slot? Absolutely. Know of a cool place to PvP, but the game won't let you put a summon sign there? Don't need a summon sign with the mod! Oh AND since no one is treated like a summon, everyone has full flasks! We've spent so long not allowing healing that including it (especially with the stupid high damage of ER) has felt refreshing for my friends and I. Could probably make tournaments a lot easier to set up too... I'm not fucking around here. There's some actual potential with this mod for PvP on PC. Food for thought.

Great video Scott! The pvp is so broken and the tryhard meta with crouche poke, moonveil, double naginatars, rob, vyke spear is just boring. The game is nearly 6 months out and just 1 patch....

Went back to invade at pontiff and was surprisingly super active still and I was playing at like 3am. Elden Ring at lvl 90 with +7/+17 weapons constantly traveling around the map took like 10 minutes to find a single invasion. Shit is just sad.

Mixed feelings on this bit. Not a fan of pvp atm, don't like being invaded but also I got my fill of pvp from the previous games. Currently just enjoying co-oping with my brother or running around solo. I've got mixed feelings because while we don't care for pvp at all atm, we know there are people who do. I'd be in favor of making it easier for people to invade by grouping areas together (like if you invade in caelid it'sll search all of calid that you've visted including dungeons and what not.) I'd also like better rewards/incentives to let people invade you (covenants for invades would be nice as well). However I'd also want more options for people to opt put of invasions without having to sacrifice co-op. Probably not a "free" invasions off button but maybe some item that you either have to craft, buy, or earn that'll keep invaders away while still letting you co-op and explore with a buddy.

I would rather have covenants than great runes. I didn't know where or how to activate or use them until ~70 hrs in. With how each sorcery and incant has it's own "class" it would make for some fun role-playing. Imagine auto-invading in Altus plateau or Leyndell as a Dragon Cultist for example. They should have had a designated Covenant for each major legacy dungeon.

Bleh, I didn't like that items and spells were tied behind covenants. They're not worthwhile if the only reason we're doing them is just to complete a build. Even worse when those covenants die and then you just... can't make the build. Getting DMB in DS3 was miserable. If it was just some matchmaking criteria, that would be fine. Probably would be better if there were fewer, but more expansive covenants - like one covenant just invades all the legacy dungeons. That would kill a couple birds with one stone.

Yeah can only invade gank squads and no covenants really kill the purpose and longevity of invasion.

I played about 120 hours with only Godrick and Malenia's runes unlocked. The truly egregious thing is that once I unlocked the rest I realised that I had missed nothing of value. Godrick's great rune is the only viable one in the entire game. It beggars belief, HOW could they end up making the successor mechanic to the humanity system so utterly POINTLESS?
@daryla4430

@@monsieurdorgat6864 that makes more sense. The open world aspect makes it too hard to pinpoint level ranges for specific areas. You can easily get lost exploring and be RL 50+ when you finally fight Morgott at Stormveil.

@@retrozombie29 The first great rune you get is the best followed by Morgott's for the extra HP and Mohg's for invaders.

I really hope we get covenants the way they were in DS3. It gave invading a feeling of progression because you were grinding for that wolf knight greatshield, or the dark moon blade! Dont know how everyone else feels, but I need to feel like I'm progressing when I play, and curerntly invasions and duels doesnt give me that. And at that point, it stops beeing fun after a while.

Man.. lack of gank city areas is the biggest detriment to this game's online for me.. no swamp, no Aldrich ganks, no bell keepers, nothing. These were the most fun areas for chaotic casual PvP with epic 3v3s

I was very big into Dark Souls 1-3/Bloodborne PvP. But Elden Ring’s just felt off, it didn’t feel good to me. It has actually been the first Souls game I have felt negatively towards the whole invasion system. Elden Ring is so big that being invaded every 10-15 minutes just kills any enjoyment of playing with friends. In Dark Souls 3, the areas were much more manageable to squeeze both PvE and PvP into one run through of a section. All of it, doesn’t feel good. I’m very happy for the Seamless Co-op mod, been having such a blast with it, I’m never going back to vanilla for playing with friends. The balance is off, but also the controls feel off. There’s delay, or something that makes the gameplay feel worse than Dark Souls 3. It’s manageable for PvE, but feels terrible when fighting players… it makes me feel, well… disappointed because I love invading and being invaded, the cat n mouse game, putting your skills to the true test of another player and their summons. Sorry Elden Ring, you’re just not doing it for me this time around.

Honestly, the biggest thing making me NOT want to play PvP is how fkn broken so many things are in this game. Completely broken Ashes of War, fingerprint shield oneshotting you, bleed curved swords oneshotting you, and a ton of the weapon types just feeling completely outclassed. There's a million weapons to choose from, but if you try and mix it up you're at a huge disadvantage because someone will just have a broken setup. I can get constant duels at Raya on PC which seems to work fine for me, but yeah no invasions really.

I am mixed about covenants and rewards but they casual players a reason to invade and pvp. It took me like 60 hours to beat ds3 because it was also my first souls games and now that own account is at 170 hours because of invading for rewards and I still find it fun getting those rewards all except mound makers but also I just find invading in ds3 if much more fun because it’s fare and balanced which is why I play souls games if I die and lose it was my fault I misplayed or the other player is better. I don’t feel that way with Elden Ring because all you need is rivers of blood and a bunch of spells. Every invade and every duel feels the same. And more people are chill in ds3 like if I want to goof around while invading I can but in Elden Eing I slightly can do 2/3 people are just going to be blood thirsty animals who hunt me down and the first step to doing that is spamming spells. It’s just not enjoyable like ds3 or any other games also because you don’t get any rewards for it. I just hope when dlc comes out and we get the pvp arena stuff then that would be good but i don’t think it would change the invading issue. Also whenever I start a new play though first step is going to dragonborrow and cheesing night cavilry for bloodhounds step because in the areas where you can’t use a horse goes by 10x faster because of it.

Wex dust shine after you drop Elden Beast is a great idea, and for the love of God if you invade anywhere in a zone you should be able to match to people anywhere else in the zone except legacy dungeons. Damage boosting talismans need to be nerfed significantly for PVP so 80% of Ashes aren't a one shot kill. They already have the functionality there for some talismans, they can easily extend it to all of them. Poise needs to be reduced across armor by a decent amount, or again functionally changed for PVP only. There's a dozen ways to balance BHS without ruining the PVE whiner's crutch. Just pick one already FROM. RKR should provide way less of a damage boost, but do a ton of stamina/poise damage. Chain casting needs to be fixed. Two handing a weapon needs to make it cause more stamina damage so powerstancing isn't just plain better. Let everyone use their great rune, and let them carry over to NG+. Let bell bearings carry over to NG+ too. Put +10/+25 Bell Bearings in the game that you can get in NG++ like the +2/3 rings in DS3. Severely limit what items can be dropped to other players, and finally add a damned shared stash to the game so people can hand stuff over to new characters without having to summon a phantom to do it for you.

Passive poise being in the game is what caused the 150 meta cuz everyone wants to rock the best armor. No dedicated dueling arenas, no leaderboard or win/loss record, no covenants, literally nothing to be gained whatsoever by winning in pvp. Also throw in how you can no longer invade solo hosts, and this game's multiplayer has no other path than dwindling away slowly, with a few ppl coming back whenever dlc drops.

The game was just too big for invasions to work the way they are programmed. That's one of the flaws with open world games. Didn't think I would say this, but I would probably have preferred a smaller/shorter game, or one without open world.

For me theres no reason to keep pvping and you bassicly summed up my reasons. Biggest 3 is just im tired of fighting 2 or 3v1 all the time. Sure sometimes is fine but unless im honor dueling in like raya its always going to be a 2v1 and that gets old. Next is simply disconnects I made a madness twink in the first month of this game and I would say a solid 85% of all invasions ended in disconnects and that gets old. Finally is simply weapon balance. Everything in the game is a one shot and when I try to mess around with build variety im fighting an insane uphill battle. A man can only invade into so many 3v1s against the host and his 2 level 150 buddies all duel wielding rivers of blood only to DC anyway about 25 seconds after finding them before he just gets tired. Shame to invading into random catacombs in the first week was very fun. Sure even then alot of people were using shit like the moonveil but it was still just noobs and their friend against you in a pit of traps. God I miss the rat covenant. I dont think From wants to have pvp in their games in all honesty they just put it in because first people kind of expect it and second they have the code lying around so might as well toss it in there.
