Angela R. Deering's 2013 ASCP Career Ambassador Application Video which answers the question, "Why did I become a laboratory professional?"
The video does have a couple issues with audio cutting in and out. To make sure everyone can clearly understand what I'm saying, here's the video in text form:
Hi! My name's Angie Deering and I work at the Transfusion Services Laboratory at the University of Michigan Health Systems in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I'm a Medical Technologist.
So why did I decide to become a Medical Technologist? First and foremost, I liked the hands-on aspect of the work. Growing up I always liked doing crafts, and I really liked science. I really pretty much was a nerd. However, school taught me that science was a lot of paperwork, and a lot of reporting and research-and that's sure as heck not what I wanted to do! How boring! Um, Medical Technology, though, it allows me to work hands-on with the things that other scientists are researching. I can plate sputum and watch bacteria grow. I can place a drop of blood underneath a microscope and see the red cells and white cells, and do a proper count of the blood. It allows me to explore the microscopic world that other people pretty much ignore, and it's pretty fascinating. It makes Medical Technology a lot of fun. It's definitely a perfect fit for me.
I also like the idea of helping patients without being in direct patient care. And yes, don't get me wrong, I love people-I'm a people person and I love talking to them-but I don't want to be around them when they're at their worst and when they're sick; I'm going to leave that up to the doctors. Medical Technology allows me to do diagnostic work behind the scenes while the doctors and nurses take care of the rest-they're the ones dealing directly with the patient. It's the perfect way for me to do what I love and still help others.
I also really like the idea of having an outlet for my-- my detail-oriented personality. I mean, in high school it would take me twice as long to do any project because I always added that extra step, I always went the extra mile. When I finally got involved with Medical Technology, I felt at home. Everybody else was just like me, they were just as detail-oriented-and it's a good thing! Being detail oriented is one of the great things a tech has to be in order to do their work properly. You have to report the results properly and if you're not detail-oriented you may not do that.
Another thing that drew me in to Medical Technology is the instrumentation. I know, I know, I said I like hands-on work, BUT I also find it very intriguing, and it kind of drew me in when I knew about the cutting edge of technology that's involved. Um, you know, things like PCR where you amplify DNA to do genetic testing or diagnose diseases. Or flow cytometry where you use lasers and forward and side scatter to do complete blood counts. These are things that they weren't around 50 years and they're things that I'm pretty sure they're going to be developed upon in the future-and it's pretty cool if you ask me.
Finally it brings me to job security. And no, it wasn't the main reason why I become-became-a Medical Technologist, but it is a really good reason to become a Medical Technologist. Um, the fact that we always are in demand. You always need a Medical Technologist. It's physically impossible for a doctor to order a test, run to the lab, perform it properly, and report it to your patient--and then make a decision on what to do. You have to have a Medical Technologist. Medical Technologists are a vitally important part of a hospital setting, and we're going to continue to be around in the future and we're going to be in high demand.
And those are the reasons why I became a Medical Technologist and I couldn't be happier.
