This one popped up on my to watch list and I can't believe I hadn't already watched it. But I have now and even if it's a little late for me to watch, thanks for posting this camp. You two remind me of my grandson and his wife so much and I've watched so many of your camps that I actually feel like one of the family. I think it's your laid back attitude, your dry humour and the way you seem to feed off of each other that makes you so endearing to watch. Are you sure you are not Australian? Oh well, maybe just across the ditch so pretty close. So glad I subscribed to your page and joined your KZitem channel. Looking forward to lots of your camping adventures in 2024 with your camp cooked meals along with more walks and film of your beautiful country. And maybe learning more about you two in your after dinner banter with your subscribers. Hope you don't mind the long winded comments mate. Happy New Year.

Yeah the Sony camera and 1.8 aperture lens allows for some really nice low light shots. It’s pretty cool. It is good to have Victoria come also I think this trip was abit cold for her though. Thinking some goose down pants will be good for her maybe some insulated boots too.

@@AbelandVictoria Really enjoyed that, and Ryan got into it too because he recognised bits of track from last weekend, and he was diving into Lake Lockett off the big rock on the left point back in 2018 when he was 9. @@kanehartill4178 yeah had an look around your camp site. There were several nice spots along the stream I thought. Lake locket in the summer would be very nice. Think I’ll do a travers of the locket range in summer maybe stop in a Ruby lake also. Cameras are intriguing. I want more zoom capabilities. Think I gotta learn to work with what I got atm first.

You said hardcore to my mish, but you guys were going for way more hardship than me! I could see from the weather fx and looking out the office window at the Dragons teeth shrouded in stroppy spin-drifty westerly that the conditions late week were grim. It's probably bit tricky deciding in balmy Nelson... there was a cruel wind in GB. Were you nervous getting that fire going? Your morning fire skills are on point! It's a pity there's that nasty little creek at the start of the quarry road eh, and the bush has closed in a lot over the last 5 years. Steph is starting to enjoy winter camps now that I've got her goosedown pants and sleepbooties. We have light down jackets like yours and also thicker baffle construction Mountain Equipment ones for piece of mind. NZ retail is pretty useless for range of down gear, they just don't have it. It'd be great if Gearshop imported a bunch of down pants, and sleephoods for with quilts, sleep socks etc. It's amazing the hole in the market, NZ is balmy compared to Nth China or Europe, Canada, but parts still get cold enough to make sitting around in 2mm longjohns or 4mm fleece under windproof pants totally inadequate. I just got some new 850FP pants from Ali, went for the Naturehike ones in narrow baffle version which are ample, eightyfivedollars. Aegismax ones likely good too, I love their G series sleeping bags. I slept in them last night to make up for 500gramsofdown 3seasonbag. Iron lake and sylvester froze over in large sections, was chilly. Also slept in a sherpa fleece pullover I got from Kmart of all places, have never had one of those shaggy fleeces. The AlphaDirect fleeces from Macpac are the bomb apparently. Also If looking for rainjackets kathmandu have a momopoly on goretex Shakedry jackets which USA reviewers rave about, on sale for 280dollars. For hanging out around the fire and getting about doing frigid night photography etc it's best to wear water/windproof overtrou over the down pants to protect them, but they have to be daggy loose fit so they don't impinge on down loft. We also have 4 different tent sized floor pads which are 2.5mm foam with aluminium foil laminated each side, 14dollarseach... makes quite a difference having the whole floor insulated + our pads are convective insulation only, so good to add the radiative heat loss barrier too. I think I prefer it under the floor as a footprint. When the air is cruel cold I have a fave sleephat, it is from the warehouse! two layers of fleece with synthetic insulation layer between, long, extends down to the tip of my nose so only breathing apparatus exposed.. Important to keep eyeball internal fluid warm plus blocks out sleep disrupting fullmoonlight.

@@kanehartill4178 where we had the tent was pretty sheltered really. Lots of wind rushing in trees above. It’s pretty satisfying when there are still embers in the fire come the morning I was surprised. I reckon the outback could have gotten over that washed out creek alright but it was a bit overgrown so didn’t really want to drive up there. I think we need some down pants. I had a quick look couldn’t find anything available for-sale in nz. I usually don’t get to cold but Victoria suffers. I’m thinking we should completely change our winter gear and swap it out for lighter and warmer options. The mac pack sleeping bags seem to not have enough down in the baffles and you get cold spots. I want a lavish 950 fill power -10 comfort rating quilt at some point as well as the neo air xtherm pad or something like it. I still have a long way to go to reach a fully optimised gear load out.

@@AbelandVictoria Flanagans is worth a look. 8 crossings of the Baton River, actually more of a stream, an overgrown track in places, in a dark little valley, but you get out into a lovely basin not unlike Ellis. Heck mid winter snow camp at 1300m ! . Mad or just super keen ? Is there now a marked route to Lake Locket.? There was as a good marked route to Diamond lake. Back in the early 90s it was a real rough goat track from downstream below Diamond lake.

It was October I think. Surprised it was so cold. Personally I like going out in winter but the wind on this camp was brutal. In the sea to summit tent all the cold air just rushes through. Our mac pac sleeping bags struggled. There is a really well marked track from the quarry. Goes to locket then continues on to diamond. Old dude made it and has traps up there. Meet him on the trail once good guy.
