We raced those YZ 490’s in the desert here in Australia . I machined the rear hub to put a much smaller sprocket on it I can’t remember how many teeth it was . That bike did over 100 mph all day . Re jetted the carby and played with the exhaust a bit . Tidied up the ports and that was all they needed .. Weapon of a bike . Thanks for bringing back some old memories.

I had an 1988 YZ 490, bad ass bike, fast as Hell, until your wound out in 6 seconds! they should have made them with 6 or 7 gears, 4 raps out way to fast! need a trench dug? grab the 490 and dump the clutch, you can plant your garden very easily because you'll have a 4" deep trench with just the twist of the throttle! great for Hill climbing too! I couldn't keep a back fender on mine, everyone that rode it flipped it over backwards when they twisted the throttle! not for the novice rider!

That is such a cool old YZ! A friend of mine had one back in the mid-80's but it was the older, yellow one. I got to ride it and couldn't believe the torque, and power at any rpm, just pure power everywhere, so much fun! Many years later in '99 I bought a new KX500 that I still have. It feels about the same as I remember that old YZ490 as far as how the power was. The KX is a 5-speed of course, but I rarely ever need to use anything other than 3rd gear when trail riding or riding around on a track. I measured the top speed once, years ago with an old garmin gps, and it hit 85mph in a grassy field, that's all she had. My KX still remains completely stock.

The primary exception, of course, is in the United States where “z” is pronounced “zee”. The British and others pronounce “z”, “zed”, owing to the origin of the letter “z”, the Greek letter “Zeta”. This gave rise to the Old French “zede”, which resulted in the English “zed” around the 15th century.

The letter 'Z' is called: 'Zed' (/zɛd/) in British English and Commonwealth English (i.e., UK, Australia, Canada, India, South Africa, etc.) ... 'Zee' (/ziː/) in American English and Newfoundland English (parts of Canada)

Both “zed” and “zee” are acceptable pronunciations for the letter Z in Canada, though “zed” is much more common. Be warned, however, that some people feel very strongly that it is a betrayal of Canadian nationality to say “zee” and you may incur their wrath if you do so.
