Thank you so much for that short clip, it's very rare you see video, of early drum and bugle c o r p s. Brings back memories my first drum and bugle c o r p s, the olph cadets, from Brooklyn New York, I was a member in 1956. Then went on to the Floyd Bennett golden eagles 1960 and 1961, then joined the Long Island sunrises after turning 21 in 1964 through 1968. Then started American Spirit senior alumni from a bugle coreps out of the Tampa Bay area Florida. With John Dowling, may he rest in peace. Great memories again thank you for the Post. Today is July 23rd 2022. God bless all of drum and bugle Corps Personnel, throughout the country that are no longer with us, and God bless all of us that are still fortunate, to be alive today. Great memories.

This is what a real drum and bugle Corps competition was. Receiving stand ovations, playing loud and proud and to the crowd. The audience would go crazy and excitement cheering, a real drum and bugle Corps. Unlike today which is really marching band competition, with all sorts of props, electric guitars amplifiers loudspeakers trombones dancing and prancing, drum lines doing warm-up exercises for their entire routine with head bobbing juggling, and Body English as though they did something special. They need to stop calling it Drum Corps International. That no longer exists it should be marching band International, call it what it really is, nothing but marching bands superimposed on the three-ring circus. Plus due to the demands put on by the activity today hundreds if not thousands of real drum and bugle cores no longer exist, they were priced out of business due to the extensive traveling that was that is totally unnecessary. Old school you would compete local then State competitions if you were good enough and if you did well in your state then you would think about going to Nationals wherever they were held. Do's in those days were 10 $20 or $1 a day in some organizations, today I believe that paying up to if not more than $6,000 per season. Again in my opinion DCI is the reason for the demise in what was one of the greatest youth activities throughout the United States and canada. I competed against the Connecticut hurricanes many many times when I was a member of the Long Island sunrises from 1964 through 1968. Had several friends in the Hurricanes as well as several friends in most senior Corps. Today is July 20th 2022. PS no offense against marching bands they do a great job but they are not a real drum and bugle c o r p s.

Thank you Fish, this is just awesome!! How did the Hurc's fare in "72 at DCA's? I know the Skyliners and Cab's dominated the 70's but the Hurc's were a consistent top 3 - 4 right?

Love it, just love it! I can watch a Sr. Drum and Bugle corp any day over the Junior Corps that look more like a Broadway Play on a football field. The Hurc's horn line was so clean and their M & M just makes me smile. The kick off line, the 2 minute gun to exit the field while playing hang 'em high and of course killing Stormy Weather. The Hurc's where the bomb! I marched and watched them in the '70's and it was quite a feat to beat the Cab's but the Hurc's did it with superior brass and a killer drum line, so clean!!

The recording here of the Hurricanes is a little weak, but the video is excellent quality. This was a very good show by the Hurcs in1970. If My Friends Could See Me Now OTL, Stars and Stripes Forever color pre, excellent. Rhapsody in Blue played superbly by Hurcs brass. Their performance at the Dream in'70 was great. Not quite as great as '69 the DCA title year but very good nevertheless.

Wouldn't exactly say it went downhill. If my friends can see me now, very good. Star's and Strive Forever, good performance of it. Joe Genero's arrangement was spot on. And the 2nd. half was excellent. Rhapsody in Blue, Walk on the Wild Side , Hang em High, Mag. Seven theme, Also Speech Zarathustra Fanfare were all great. I saw them at The Dream this '70 season and they wer very good. Not quite as '69, but very good nevertheless.

Any Hurricane fan should contact John Fisher (who posted this video) to order his newly released book, "The Connecticut Hurricanes"! Pictures, memories, and all the inside stories of one of the corps that made the activity what it has become, with BYFBO renditions of classic pieces such as Rhapsody in Blue and many more. A well researched, well written, and most important, well lived love letter to a great corps and a great activity.

I agree with you 100%, that category is missed by millions of people. Marching bands that they have today don't require military bearing. So activity has turned into marching band International. We no longer have real drum and bugle Corps. May they all rest in peace. August 18th 2022

Very nice tribute. I remember being 'fitted' with one of the old black uniforms in Oct 1958 at the old rehearsal hall on Howe Avenue in Shelton (the Clark Building?). Pretty sure the photo was taken in North Haven High School in Jan (?) 1959. Nice to be able to recognize Art Hylwa, Tom Brady and others in this shot.

No one asked you that and I find it ironic and a blessing that you should make that your comment. Thank you .! I made it my personal pleasure to speak to Harvey in 77 on the warning track at the Barnum festival. Harvey in his 60s at least . Just small talk . Why did I do it ? Probably because I felt his passion and commitment should be recognized by all . I at 29 would make it my lifelong passion as well . A.commonality that would transcend time and distance . He was warm, friendly, welcoming . A good soul . Glad to say I took the time . ... A good memory A fellow competitor on the field yet much beyond that , I miss him .

Ah geez, you're kidding me, right? Genero didn't know how to end a song? Did you hear the 69 Hurcs and Rhapsody in Blue? The end of "Halleluiah Chorus" any time they played it? I hate to even bring this up, but 77 Matadors' "Rocky"? Genero knew more about drum corps, and shows, than anyone in the activity. I could go on, but I got a headache reading your post.

I was a 14-year-old kid watching DCA Finals that night in NJ, and the Hurricanes completely blew me away. My favorite corps of the evening. The "Impossible Dream" color presentation, with the music segments representing each of the five leading U.N. nations at the height of the Cold War, and the underlying "If we all worked together for peace" message, was absolutely brilliant.

Should been a photo finish between Hurcs and Sky at '72 DCA at Roosevelt Stadium that night Old Time. Joe's arrangement of Fanfare for the New and he Jewish folk song arrangement were masterpieces and superbly performed by Hurcs brass line. Joe's Malaguena chart arguably the best all time in drum corps! This was the best show in DCA that year and Sky's was very close. But as usual the fix was in and the Cabs got the title. What the hell else is new.
