This is what a real drum and bugle Corps competition was. Receiving stand ovations, playing loud and proud and to the crowd. The audience would go crazy and excitement cheering, a real drum and bugle Corps. Unlike today which is really marching band competition, with all sorts of props, electric guitars amplifiers loudspeakers trombones dancing and prancing, drum lines doing warm-up exercises for their entire routine with head bobbing juggling, and Body English as though they did something special. They need to stop calling it Drum Corps International. That no longer exists it should be marching band International, call it what it really is, nothing but marching bands superimposed on the three-ring circus. Plus due to the demands put on by the activity today hundreds if not thousands of real drum and bugle cores no longer exist, they were priced out of business due to the extensive traveling that was that is totally unnecessary. Old school you would compete local then State competitions if you were good enough and if you did well in your state then you would think about going to Nationals wherever they were held. Do's in those days were 10 $20 or $1 a day in some organizations, today I believe that paying up to if not more than $6,000 per season. Again in my opinion DCI is the reason for the demise in what was one of the greatest youth activities throughout the United States and canada. I competed against the Connecticut hurricanes many many times when I was a member of the Long Island sunrises from 1964 through 1968. Had several friends in the Hurricanes as well as several friends in most senior Corps. Today is July 20th 2022. PS no offense against marching bands they do a great job but they are not a real drum and bugle c o r p s.

I was a 14-year-old kid watching DCA Finals that night in NJ, and the Hurricanes completely blew me away. My favorite corps of the evening. The "Impossible Dream" color presentation, with the music segments representing each of the five leading U.N. nations at the height of the Cold War, and the underlying "If we all worked together for peace" message, was absolutely brilliant.

Always liked the Hurricanes. That brass line played with great power and intonation. Drum line was always superb, and Ray Lieder one of the all time great percussion arrangers/instructprs

Joe Jenero didn't know how to end a song...and thank god for that, plus the suicide wheel mag7 and 2001 ending was just incredible,an extremely high showmanship corps.Loved them since I was a kid!

Ah geez, you're kidding me, right? Genero didn't know how to end a song? Did you hear the 69 Hurcs and Rhapsody in Blue? The end of "Halleluiah Chorus" any time they played it? I hate to even bring this up, but 77 Matadors' "Rocky"? Genero knew more about drum corps, and shows, than anyone in the activity. I could go on, but I got a headache reading your post.

Suspect? You must not have seen Hawthorne swallow the field like an invading army. It’s on KZitem. Hurcs were great! But not #1 in72’

Should been a photo finish between Hurcs and Sky at '72 DCA at Roosevelt Stadium that night Old Time. Joe's arrangement of Fanfare for the New and he Jewish folk song arrangement were masterpieces and superbly performed by Hurcs brass line. Joe's Malaguena chart arguably the best all time in drum corps! This was the best show in DCA that year and Sky's was very close. But as usual the fix was in and the Cabs got the title. What the hell else is new.

@@droadcman I was at that show and I absolutely disagree with you. Cabs were very good that night, but Hurcs were superb and should have won '72 DCA title. You have your opinion, I have mine, with all due respect.

Power house . Ray Ludee was the drum instructor for me growing up . I marched in the Stateliners . We had a killin drum section. I thought I would march in the Hurricanes but started playing pro drums at 18 . Ray was an amazing drum instructor instructor. I remember him dearly

Thank you Fish, this is just awesome!! How did the Hurc's fare in "72 at DCA's? I know the Skyliners and Cab's dominated the 70's but the Hurc's were a consistent top 3 - 4 right?
