We always bring a backpack that will hold our Yeti cups. My son has a smaller cup that's the perfect size to fit in a mesh side pocket. We fill it with ice, and it lasts all day, doesn't melt quickly, and provides us with refreshing sips when we're hot and waiting in lines. We also buy lots of glow in the dark necklaces and braclets from the dollar store. At Dollar Tree, you can get 4 necklaces or 8 bracelets for only a buck. They're fun to wear at night, and buying them ahead of time saves tons of money compared to buying the ones that appear in the parks at night and cost a small fortune. We braid and twist them together to make crowns and ponytail holders, and we put them all over our child so we can spot him easily in crowds if he gets separated from us for a moment. Brick phone chargers are also a lifesaver! Cell phones die quickly when you're constantly snapping pictures or posting updates to social media about your vacation. We always bring one for each phone and bring in one of the wall chargers too because sometimes you get lucky and get a table at lunch or dinner that's near a wall outlet. In addition to ponchos, a garbage bag makes a great raincoat for your backpack (with cell phones stored safely inside it) when going on river rapids water rides if you don't opt for a locker. :-) Deana

Here's a tip that people (including myself) always look over: find out what is and isn't allowed into the parks ahead of time! Like how Disney World doesn't allow selfie sticks. And until one of my friends told me, I had no idea that I could actually bring in some of my own food, could've saved me a lot of time and stress if I knew that in advance.

Tip, from what I can tell at Disney, if you want to sneak in food, just grab something that looks like you can buy it at a resort or something. I usually carry a small bag or two of chips and I've never been stopped for food! This is just my observation so it changes for everybody but this is my advice.

Great tips! A few I'll add, especially for Florida parks: 1) we use an inexpensive mesh backpack to carry sunscreen, water, hand wipes, phones, etc. Everything goes inside ziplock bags, so if it rains or we go on a water ride, no worries! Very lightweight to carry, too. We take turns carrying it throughout the day. 2) We bring Crystal Light powder packets for whenever we want to add a bit of flavor to the free cups of ice water we get at restaurants/kiosks. 3) I found a great mister fan on Amazon that's smaller to carry than the one you showed. Also, it's USB charged, so I don't have to worry about batteries going down during our trip, slowing the fan power or stopping altogether. It was my best purchase ever for June at WDW! I also wear a frogg togg around my neck in summer at the parks to keep cool. 4) I agree @ the cheap ponchos not being as good as vinyl, but they are much lighter to carry several at once. I keep one cheap one for each of us in the backpack or pockets at all times, for emergency. But, if I know it's going to be a rainy day, we pack the vinyl ones. 5) Shoes - comfy and quick dry are best. Nothing worse for me than walking around in wet socks. I love my Keens...not pretty, but comfy & quick dry! 🙂

Our home park is Adventureland Park in Altoona, IA. We've been a season pass holder for a few years now. We always try to go on Sunday because the lines are shorter. With a season pass, if the lines are too long for a ride, you know you'll get a chance to ride it next time. Also, we tend to exit the park so we can eat cheaper at a nearby fast food place, and then go back for more rides.

For any park really: Get there at opening and go to the back of the park first and work your way back to the front. Especially for parks like Hollywood Studios. Can easily get in two or three rides on Rock n' and Tower of Terror each before the lines get above twenty minutes on just about any day. For Disney with food: You can bring in food in coolers and things like that. Super easy and much cheaper to make sandwiches and sides and just rent a locker to store it. Best part is, if doing a long day at Disney World and park hopping, can pack dinner in there too and rent for another locker at another park for a heavily discounted price if you keep your receipt from the same day.

I like the hints! One I definitely make sure to stick to is to bring a variety of snacks in, so that everyone can munch on what their body is telling them they need! Protein from nuts and/or jerky, dried fruit for natural sugars, crackers for carbohydrates and a bit of salt (to replace what the family loses in sweat) and I ALWAYS try to get the fun snacks that the family doesn't get often. It helps everyone feel like they are being treated rather than missing out on something. It can be a morale killer if you're the kid eating PB&J when all the other kids get to feast. Also, I make sure to think through what kind of crackers I bring. Some will turn to dust in a bag or pocket before you get a chance to eat them! Wheat Thins work really well, lots of food and very compact.

Number 6 about comfortable shoes is so true. I once saw this family who was dressed up with jeans ( LONG HEAVY SPARKLY JEANS) with 6 inch heels and full blown make up. They were in front of me on the universal studios barge water ride ( which of course everyone gets soaking wet). When they got off, I felt so bad for them. They had saggy wet jeans in 90+ degree weather with 100% humidity. I can't imagine how much they suffered for the rest of the day with wet jeans. *shivers*

For Disney, we would eat our packed lunches in our car. Since we had a van, it was easy to fold down the seats to make tables and since we brought our own lunches, we could bring quite a selection of chips and dip, vegetables, salads, sandwiches, etc. and nothing was wasted, because whatever we didn't eat we'd just bring again the next day.

One method my family always uses for cheap lunch is we bring an ice cooler from home, stuff snacks, water, and food in there and then at about lunch, we would exit and just eat in the car. Disney World does have some sort of bundle discounts on occasion when you stay on property, mostly for Dining Plans, which takes care of your food basically. Disney parks don't have the souvenir cups, but the hotels and resorts do, free drinks with the cup for your stay. Mid March is a bad time to go to Disney because all the Canadian children are off on March break, and everyone goes to Disney then.

Throw in a couple of telescoping chairs and an umbrella and you have a relaxing place to eat. - We usually bring some type of trail mix in with us to keep the munchies away. Everyone has their own bag and have never been stopped. -We usually bring in empty water bottles. Find a drinking fountain and fill them up. -Disney will let you bring in small coolers. When we stayed off property we had a collapsible soft sided cooler we kept in our backpack. Easy to tote around and so much cheaper than buying food on sight.

A small piece of advice for security: Use see-through/transparent bags, especially if you're just bringing a few small things. Chances are, they won't even have to open it. Plus, they're often waterproof, so your stuff is protected if a random storm hits (since in places like Disney/Universal...Yeah. You just never know.) And if you don't want people in the parks to see your collection of items, that's where your light jacket can come in handy. Just throw it in there on top of everything after you get passed security.

5:48 George, you hit the nail on the head. Comfortable shoes are EVERYTHING. When I was in Disney my last visit I saw a family sitting on a bench in Epcot having to pop a blister on their son's foot. The kid was SCREAMING and it was a HUGE blister. I felt so bad for the poor kid. The last place in the world you want to get a blister is Disney. It will RUIN your day because walking with it is going to KILL. I personally love new balance as I'm a larger guy (around 320) and for me they're like walking on clouds. My new balances have done 3 tours of Disney and I've been blister-free, wouldn't trade them for the world For those that want some tips, your shoes should not create any friction on your foot whatsoever and definately not pinch. Also with the heels for the ladies... up a hill in those? The risk of pinching a nerve in your spinal cord is IMMENSELY high. Then you'll have bigger problems. Theme parks aren't my first experience with good shoes. As an eagle scout who's done his fair share of hikes, I've had plenty of blisters in my time. Never again

I am an annual pass holder at Universal Studios Orlando. This is what I do when we go into the parks. From Universal's City Walk (area you walk around with shops, bars, restaurants before choosing a park) I see where the majority of the traffic is going to. Generally, it's towards Islands of Adventure, mostly because of The Hulk coaster is what attracts people and Harry Potter with Hogwarts is there as well. So we go to Universal Studios through the secret entrance, this allows us to get to rides more quickly in the morning. We'll hit Hollywood Rip Ride Rocket (HRRR), then the Mummy. We then head back to the front of the park, not far away, and go to the right. We do this because people are drawn to the coaster (HRRR) and we hit the park in reverse. We stop by Finnegans to say hi to our friends who are the bartenders there. At this point, it's lunchtime, we then hop on the Hogwarts express and go over to the other park and hit up the rides there. Usually the wait times are below 30 minutes because everyone is eating lunch. Just some tips for Universal Orlando.

I agree with this list 100%. One of the worst things is being miserable at the happiest place on Earth. Disneyland, universal, etc are too expensive to waste on a bad time. The water tip is so important. When I went to Tokyo Disneyland, it was unbearably hot and humid (worse than Florida) and you need to drink water every 30 minutes or you will get heat exhaustion. It's amazing how water is taken for granted these days.

yep, one I didn't mention because not every park has an app yet. But if the park does have one, get it!

my younger sister has created a game where she has us guess the times for different rides just for fun, and I have to admit it's a fun way to get excited about an upcoming trip, or just thinking of what you want to do next time

Cedar Point has a lunch area where you can bring in coolers of food, that however was years ago I believe they still do it but now they have to do a check on them

A good tip for getting through security bag check: Have your bag(s) open and ready before it's your turn to be checked. Saves a lot of time!

If you get a season pass, look into a meal plan. Disney has a few levels, most Cedar Fair parks offer an option, and they can be worth it. About $120 here at Kings Island gets you a meal every 5 hours.
