Stanford receiver Chris Walsh caught a pair of touchdowns in the second half, including a go-ahead score from 12 yards out with 1:11 to play, and a USC field goal missed short and to the right as time expired as the Cardinal defeated the Trojans 24-17 in 1991 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
Early in the third quarter Walsh caught a pass from Steve Stenstrom on a comeback route, then outran the USC secondary for a 71-yard touchdown, giving Stanford a 17-7 lead. The Stanford offense, however, stagnated after that score, and USC scored 14 unanswered to take a 21-17 advantage.
With 3:37 remaining, Stanford began its final possession at their own 35-yard line. They methodically drove down the field and converted on 4th and five from the USC 34-yard line when Stenstrom found tailback Glyn Milburn open on an out pattern. Milburn caught the pass at the 30-yard line, then tiptoed down the sideline as he evaded defenders before he was tackled at the USC 12-yard line.
Two plays later, Stenstrom connected with Walsh on a post pattern to put Stanford on top. Stanford's other touchdown, a reception by Jon Pinckney, also came on a post pattern.
USC had the chance to win the game with a touchdown or tie it with a field goal on their final possession, but Cole Ford's 45-yard field goal was well off the mark.
It was Stanford's first victory over USC since 1975. The game was a turning point for Stanford and USC, as it was the second game of a seven-game winning streak for Stanford and began a six-game skid for USC. Stanford finished the regular season 8-4 (6-2), with USC going 3-8 (2-6).
Through 2012, USC maintains a 59-23-3 edge in their series with Stanford. However, the series has been evenly matched going back to 1991, with both teams winning 11 games apiece.
