Stanford regained The Axe and started a seven-year winning streak over California with a 29-24 victory in the 1995 Big Game at Stanford Stadium. With the win, Stanford ended the 1995 regular season with a record of 7-3-1 (5-3).
Tailback Mike Mitchell rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns for Stanford, while cornerback Kwame Ellis made several big plays for the Cardinal defense, most notably a strip of Cal's star tight end Tony Gonzalez, who caught 10 passes for 150 yards and one touchdown, early in the fourth quarter.
With Stanford leading 23-17 early in the fourth quarter, Cal took possession of the ball with the chance to take the lead with a touchdown and an extra point. Ellis, however, had other plans, as he ripped the ball from Gonzalez as the tight end fought for extra yards. Gonzalez insisted after the game that his knee was down (the replay shows it wasn't) and that his forward progress had been stopped (a call that could have gone either way). Regardless, Stanford took possession of the ball and quickly scored their final touchdown of the game to take a 29-17 lead (the two-point conversion attempt failed).
The 1995 Big Game was the first for Stanford head coach Tyrone Willingham, who would complete his tenure 7-0 vs. Cal. It was the final big game for Cal head coach Keith Gilbertson, who was fired after the game. Gilbertson was 2-2 vs. Stanford.
