Here is the REAL rule that governs when to use the indefinite articles A vs. An:
- Use A if the word that follows starts with a consonant SOUND.
Use An if the word that follows starts with a vowel SOUND.
Today, we will review 5 contexts in which you really need to pay attention to the SOUND the letter makes, regardless of whether it is a vowel or consonant letter:
1) Words starting with U: U does not always make a vowel sound. For example, in the sentence: E.g.: He bought a uniform.
2) Acronyms:E.g.: An MRI, or an NDA (Non-disclosure agreement)
3) Words starting with O: E.g.: It was a one-man show.
4) When referring to letter names: E.g.: Fan starts with an F
5) Words starting with H: H can be silent. If it is silent, use an. E.g.: It is an honor to be here.
There are some words where both A and An are considered correct because the words can be pronounced in 2 ways. All of these rogue words start with the letter H: hotel, historic, historical, horrific, herb. Some dialects/regions produce these words with a silent H. In this case, use An. Some dialects/regions produce these words with a /h/ sound. In this case, use A.
