This is an introductory video on the study of Jesus. You will learn the general storyline for his life, evaluate the issues that shape our contemporary views, learn about the Biblical background and claims, as well as explore tensions and the benefits to a belief in him.
Session 1: Introduction | This video series is part of a Bible reading plan at Anthem Church, which provides the key scriptures that form and support 10 foundational Christian beliefs.
Section 2: My Story | Pastor Phil explains from his lived experience how he grew deeper in his relationship to God through his encounter with Jesus. .
Session 3: Outcome | You will form a more coherent Christian belief about who Jesus is and what he has done as revealed in the scriptures. Pastor Phil lists his five goals for you from today's lecture.
Session 4: Summary of Jesus' Life | Pastor Phil briefly reviews the general storyline for the life of Jesus, according to the Gospel accounts in the Bible.
Session 5: Contemporary Views of Jesus | You will learn about the tensions explored and addressed by our modern scholars, including the key issues and assumptions in the debate.
Session 6: Recent Trends in Modern Scholarship | You will learn the source of these recent trends in modern scholarship to separate the Christ of the Bible from history. Pastor Phil highlights the key leaders, and their influence.
Session 7: Critical Methods in Modern Scholarship | You will learn about the four methods, including their strengths and weaknesses, which were used to 'find' Jesus in the Gospels.
Session 8: Conclusions of Modern Views | Pastor Phil explains his evaluation of their pursuit, including what is both concerning and helpful. You will learn about his view of the 'Jesus Seminar' and the importance of a comprehensive historical study of Jesus.
Session 9: Biblical Background to Jesus | Jesus is part of a larger Biblical story. You will learn how the Old Testament story was building towards the person of Jesus, and how unique he is as the fulfillment of the promised 'Greater Moses.'
Session 10: Biblical Support for His Divinity | You will learn about the Old Testament and New Testament claims, which describe Jesus as God. This includes a reaction to the Jehovah Witness Controversy, and and explanation of why this matters for us.
Session 11: Biblical Support for His Humanity | You will learn about the key New Testament claims, which describe Jesus as a human being. This includes an in-depth explanation of why this belief matters for us.
Session 12: Following Jesus' Example | You will learn about the significance of Jesus identifying with our humanity, and how he gives as a model example for us to follow.
Session 13: Virgin Birth & Gethsemane Prayer | With all this said, Pastor Phil briefly comments on the significance of these two related, but often confusing passages. Why does it matter that Mary was a virgin? And, why would Jesus pray to God to not go through with the cross?
Session 14: Resurrection of Jesus | How can a body be resurrected? What did Jesus look like after he was raised from the dead? Pastor Phil explores the significance to this belief, the evidence of the resurrection, theories that argue against it, and then an explanation of why this matters to us.
Session 15: Hypostatic Union | How can Jesus be both God and man? Pastor Phil explores the significance to this belief, defining terms, explaining what it means and does not mean, as well as why this is important to us.
Session 16: Kenosis of Christ | What does it mean that Christ 'emptied himself'? Pastor Phil walks through Philippians 2:5-11, explaining what it means and does not mean, adn then why it matters for us.
Session 17: Sinless Nature of Jesus | Did Jesus sin? Was he able to sin? Pastor Phil explains the issues, what we know and do not know, and then how to make sense of this belief in a consistent and thoughtful way.
Session 18: Significance of Jesus for the Church | You will learn how the incarnation of God in the person of Jesus reshapes our view of the church, our mission, and what it means to glorify God.
Session 19: Concluding Thoughts | Pastor Phil reminds us of the importance of what we are doing and how this study of Jesus builds towards our next video.
