Miss those Killinger handles. I have a handful I’m saving for the perfect heads. They really made any axe look and feel great but I especially like them with Connie’s.

I know exactly what you mean! I recently in the "Axe Handle Talk" video I talked about the killinger french curve handle I haven't used yet. It's a work of art in itself.

Great job. I have a Collins "Bonded" Connecticut and Killenger French curve reserved for a future project. I haven't hung a head in a couple years, so I need to get my chops back before circling back. Very interesting!

Very cool and gladl you enjoy. Collins BONDED line was supposed to be of even higher quality than the legitimus so that should be a very nice setup when done! Feel free to reach out and let me know how it goes. I'd love to see.

Thanks, man. I actually had this axe out on the bench today's for making an introduction to a new build video I'm thinking of doing. The killinger handles are definitely cool if you can find one still. They always pair well with those tall eye patterns like Connie's and tassies.

That Plumb is a Tasmanian pattern axe. Therefore the high centre line. Tasmanian pattern is modified Connecticut pattern used on Australian and New Zealand hardwoods. These Tassies are the best type for splitting.

Thanks for checking out the video! It's possible that the plumb head is a Tassie since it was a used head I found on eBay. I do believe it to be a connecticut, though. My reasoning is that tassies typically have a very short poll, and it does not taper in width from the eye. While a Connie has a thicker poll that tapers as it goes back from the eye. You are absolutely right about Tassies having a higher centerline that lends them nicely for use as a splitting axe. It's my understanding that plumb had a hand in developing the first Tasmanian patterns, so it makes sense that there are many similarities between them. I do have a HYTEST tassie that I want to rehang. If I remember, I'll dig it out and do a bit of a comparison video.
@michaelcatherwood4088

I'd like to see that Hytest you have. I have a Plumb the looks identical to the Plumb in your video. Kelly Dandenongs have smaller polls as you describe but the Plumbs are usually larger. Another factor to remember is that they are all hand forged and no two axes are the same.

Nice build! I followed your previous videos and shaped a scroll knob on a hardware store handle recently. Your tutorial was great but as you mentioned, it does take a bit of time. I can see how the Whiskey River Heritage handle is a good alternative.

Absolutely! The whiskey river handles feel great right off the bat. I enjoy the shaping of the handles so I'll likely continue it. However I will certainly be picking up more. Especially with their 32C release. That's awesome that you followed along and shaped up a hardware store handle. It's really nice to be able to tune something exactly how you want! I'd love to see some pics of how yours came out.

i hung two axes today. one handle was pretty fat and needed a lot of work. i soaked the wood in the eye with oil. came with doughnut shaped ,metal things to look in the wood, but not sure about using them. i filed the inside of the eye to take the sharp corners off. working on a blacksmith hammer tomorrow. needs a sledgehammer handle. is a big boy

Very nice! I try to avoid steel wedges whenever possible. Same with gluing in the wedge. My school of thought is if it comes loose I'll just seat the wedge deeper or put in a new wedge. Both gluing and steel cross wedges make that harder. Sounds like you're talking about a steel barrel wedge. Lots of other guys love them. Lots of others glue wedges too. As long as the heads tight do whatever makes you happy👍👍

@@Nsvens89 one axe channel i watch he does the wedge in with pva and around the wedge with epoxy to the eye. would be hellish to remove.
@Nsvens89
Жыл бұрын
That definitely sounds like it would be a full project to remove if the handle broke. My experience is wood glue will help a wedge from waking back out. But if a wedge is walking back out chances are it was never a good fit to start. And the wood glue will prevent you from seating the wedge a little deeper if the humidity changes enough to where you get a tiny bit of movement. But this is all just my thoughts. I'm not claiming to be an expert lol. Plumb used epoxy with what they called permabond and that worked well.

That turned out very nice. Connecticut's are definitely one of my favorite patterns aesthetically, but I think more convexity in the cheeks would make it perform better in more woods.

They are one of my favorite patters also. I even prefer the looks of them over a tassie. It may only be trumped by the rockaway for me. I know a high centerline helps pop the chips when cutting but I would imagine it also lessens the depth of the cut slightly. I may need to do some head to head testing eventually. I've got the axes to test it, finding the time is the hard part haha. Thanks for watching and the kind words man! It was a fun build.

@@Nsvens89 I picked up my first Rockaway recently. I probably watched your Rockaway build video 10 times trying to decide which way to go with the restoration. The pole mushrooming has me vexed. Leaning towards leaving it so I don't mess up the patina with shiny metal.
@Nsvens89
Жыл бұрын
That's awesome man!!! Rockaway are definitely not the easiest pattern to find. It certainly is a dilemma as to try and correct poll damage or not. A while back I did a plumb Connie build that I sold on ebay where I did what I called a blued and blended method. I fixed a little poll damage and kind of fethered the bare metal into the patina. I then blued it so it wasn't a stark contrast. If I still had the axe I'd take a video for you explaining it. If you're on Instagram shoot me a DM and I'll send you some pics I took of it. It might help you decide what to do with your rockaway, I'm @nsvensen89 there.

I was fortunate enough to pick up a French curve while he was selling them. Maybe a handle comparison video would be interesting. Killinger French curve, whiskey river 30C, tuned up house handle and perhaps a vintage one.

That's definitely a good suggestion. I don't have any experience welding but it's something I would love to try in the future. As long as the bit was kept cool it shouldn't impact the performance at all. You would need to be careful on pattern like rafters though, as some have hardened pols. The welding would likely ruin the heat treatment on it. Thanks for watching and the suggestion!!
