VIDEO DETAILS
On Thursday 28th March 2024 two Wildlife Guardian investigators took to the high moors of Exmoor in a gale to attend a meet of the Devon and Somerset Staghounds at the usual cattle market at 'Wheddon Cross' but there was no sign and for a short while we thought they'd had the good sense to cancel but this hope was short lived when news came that they'd relocated down to the 'Upcott' area a mile or two south.
It took us a long time to get a view of any hunting but at 14.20 we parked up close to a hunt crowd in the village of 'Winsford' . In a short while we saw and recorded the small herd of deer that were being illegally hunted with three hounds. Amongst the herd was a small young stag that got separated and came back on his own and ran south.
At this point a huge charge of 4x4 vehicles and quads headed up the Exford Road leaving no sodden grass verge safe from being trashed and at some points blocking gully's and adding to an already fragile flooding situation. Meanwhile The stag had now taken refuge up in 'Nurcott Firs' but he was soon turned back to the village of 'Winsford '.
Worrying news now came to us that the stag had been sighted in the swollen River Exe right in the village and sure enough when we got there we saw a very large gathering of hunters all staring at the river and the huntsman on foot recklessly casting hounds in those conditions.
Mercifully they could not find him and we eventually left the scene with hope that the stag managed to get out the water unscathed and remained lost to them.
Before his summer season of taking money from tourists, the proprietor of the business 'Red Deer Safari' was out on his own in the safari vehicle following this stag hunt.
