Actually, when you see a French text you know 99% how to pronounce every single word including word boundaries (liaison etc.). If you see oi it's always [wa], ai is always [e] or [ε] (strictly defined by the context). The rules are sophisticated but there _are_ rules with little to no exceptions (which are usually sub-rules). English has no rules. Hose, dose, whose, lose, rose, chose - in French all these would be [...o:z] (long oh plus z). English? Well, watch Loïc again. I studied French more than 20 years ago for a short time and I can still read it, with an accent but consistently (I can't gargle my R). I started learning English a bit later and... I still check for the pronunciation every now and then even though I guess the meaning from the context most of the time.

It’s because English is a conquerors language and has multiple language roots instead of the usual singular one, As it conquered it changed and adopted phrases and words from other languages and after all that grammar was haphazardly tossed in there, So the English we have now is neither the original language nor a single language of its own.

Also as a dyslexic person, no English spelling is not intuitive at all even when it's your native language I can spell other languages better. I refer English words based on greek/latin too as their pronunciation is always regular including the stress Currently learning Italian atm and noticed my dyslexia does actually effect my Italian a bit but nowhere near the same cos spelling and pronunciation are so regular. You learned the words as the words themselves. They are your conceptual reference for said thing. Anything else refers back to that in your brain. English isn’t simply visual (can be read and directly interpreted once you know the “sounds” of a language - IE Spanish) We’ve got a bunch of different things that don’t occur in other languages like letters making completely different sounds with no actual rules to it all. Other languages typically have a character representing that different sound. Homonyms are a whole different beast…
