quick explanation for non-french (or french) speakers É translates to "High pitch accent", where you pitch it up a bit, as demonstrated È translates to "Low pitch accent", where you pitch it down a bit, also as demonstrated Ê is a little tricky, usually sounds like the low pitched one, but is used when a letter that was once there gets removed from the word, and to pay homage to that letter that died, we put 'Zeh littelle hatt' Ë isn't originally a french accent iirc, but it does appear in french, and basically means that the letter it's on isn't at all related to the letters before or after it, making it pronounced entirely separated Ç is to make sure people know that that C is a soft one I can't remember any other ones rn, but those seem to be it for now ig

We also have à which is basically used only in là (there) and à (to) to distinguish them from a (has) and la (feminine the) and ù for où (where) to distinguish it from ou (or). They both sound the same as the original letter tho. Also you can put zeh littele hatte on basically any vowel (beside y?), although on ô it basically ensures it's a closed o, like in Romeo as opposed to the o in dog. Aaaaaand that might be it?

Back in middle school, I once called that little hat a "rooftop" in class. That's how my mom would teach me to remember that accent so I said that in class when I was asked about accents. Keep in mind he's going for the spectacular issues. é and è works in the sens that when you see them, you have no ambiguity on the pronunciation. ê while it may be confusing with è is supposed to have a slight accentuation over it (although it doesn't really matter). On the plus side, you also know how to pronounce it when you see it. But yes, you have quite a lot of words that will pronounce é or è without those letters appearing. TBF you have quite a few of those in english too. I'd be curious if anyone has quantified what language has more discrepancies. Pretty sure it's not German :) kzitem.info/news/bejne/uYyC4HiXiIuGl6A

Fun fact: the french changes the "es" from other languages to "e" with others accents, like in spanish the word write is "escribe", we change the "es" to "é", so it makes "écrire". Or forest, we change the "es" to "ê" so it makes "forêt"

That is actually the only use for the circumflex! At least, it was regularised to have this meaning, when ‘s’ was elided. Of course, the acute accent is used in the Latin ‘s’ -> ‘es’ -> ‘és’ at the start of words. The accents in French all do make sense from a linguistic viewpoint though, and English has always been worse.
@andythierry5402
2 жыл бұрын
@@thomaspearson9566 No it’s not, the circumflex is also used to distinguish tenses (third person of the subjonctif imparfait -> qu’il eût / il eut), it’s also used to distinguish words written the same but with different meanings although the word that did take the circumflex of the homonyms, when looking at their etymology they did use to have an s so it does kind of fit into what you were saying but when it comes to the subjunctive I haven’t been able to find anything which goes that way because it wouldn’t explain why only the subjunctive takes the circumflex in the third person.

@@andythierry5402 No he is right, it's here to synbolize an old "s" from old french. In the case of conjugations it's more likely that it used to be written or pronounced with an "s" but got lost in time.
@hugobourgon198
2 жыл бұрын
@@thomaspearson9566 The circumflex is supposed to make the sound longer. That's why "théâtre" has it even if there were no "s" in that word. "Âge" never had an "s" either. The circumflex replace a double "a" in "âge" (old French "aage").
