I know it's paradoxical but you have to pretend you're not and then you get over it. When you're scarier than the dog, they're least likely to bite. I used to be scared of my dealer's pit bull because he'd want to play and the more scared I was, the harder he'd come at me (and especially my face). Until I really put him down and held him down. I showed dominance and now each time stare him tf down. He cool now. Dogs need clear boundaries and if they're not sure which one of you is the dominant one, it's in their nature to find out.

As someone who’s had multiple family members been randomly attacked by dogs on the street, and myself who has had many negative childhood experiences with guard dogs specifically, this person’s fear is legitimate. As the owner, your dog protects you, not necessarily everyone else. Many dogs are powerful and easily capable of severely harming someone. Please keep your dog on a leash and ask before you let it approach people. Don’t be that person who just shouts “he’s friendly!” As your dog comes running up to me. Be respectful of others, thanks.

Even people woth no fear of dogs can be allergic, or dont like being jumped on and/or licked, Or want/need to leave your home without too much dog hair on their clothes. But a visible fear of dogs in a visitor, above all, is a peak reason to show compassion and good manners as a host and dog owner, and keep your pet away from their personal space, even if that's inconvenient for you. It's not your sweet pup's fault, nor the visitor's, who (while it might be hardfor you yo understand if you don't have a phobia) can't help being afraid and may be making superhuman efforts, internally, to appear as near-calm as they can.... It's incredibly difficult for a person to navigate a social situation while also suppressing a panic attack that their brain is trying to trigger. Please be a courteous dog owner!💗

The amount of times people have turned on me even when I thought I did everything right has given me great amounts of anxiety. That being said I understand why it can be the other way around and it's fun to see autistic people with different experiences to mine. I have a fear of tight spaces. Guess what I don't do? Blame the government if I decide to go caving and get scared. If you don't like being around dog owners, then don't be around dog owners. Find new friends. If you're referring to strangers on the street, then re-read your comment and think about it a bit more. They don't understand that you have a phobia because they don't know you, and they're not going to keep their pets locked up just to make you feel comfortable. Again, they don't know you.

thing is, as someone who is afraid of dogs myself, if the dog randomly did this as i was walking past its owner or close to the dog its self, what i 1st think is its trying something really weird to approach or warn me to back off in some way. as most people actually dont properly train their dogs mostly doing it to be hostile to other people just to defend its owner or not training it to be far more careful around other people who are scared of dogs that tend to keep a distance from them when possible. if its a golden retriever, they are the only dogs i can really trust as they are well known to be well trained loyal and obiedient dog breeds which are usually extremely friendly to other people. so when i see those, i tend to be fine around them. if its any other dog breed even the small ones ik they re likely not friendly dogs and pose a threat to me.

It doesn't matter how much you explain to someone that there's nothing to be afraid of, they will still be terrified. Buddy of mine knocked on a neighbor’s door without looking at the steps underneath him. Steps were pretty bare bones and had a beehive underneath. No problem until… He knocked on the metal screen door which you could see through. The actual door was wide open. When he knocked he heard something big headed his way. A large mastiff barreling around the corner headed straight for him. He had a choice: run or hold the screen door shut. He ran. Ended up getting chased by both bees and the mastiff. He and I were hanging out later on when he told me this story. Every time we saw dogs he would walk the other direction. Poor guy.

From that moment, I don't know what happened, I went from being someone who would run a mile from a dog to someone who just sees how amazing lovely they are. Even if they bark at me, I can see that it's not real. But that little puppy completely melted my fear of dogs. Wish it had happened sooner.

The best advice I ever heard in dealing with strange dogs, was from Cesar Millan, the dog whisperer, who said “pretend you’re the popular girl at school and everybody wants your attention, but you’re too cool to look at anyone”... in other words, completely ignore the pooch as if it is invisible. I live in a southern US state where dogs are as likely as not to be unleashed, and pit bull types are popular... this approach has given me a lot of peace of mind. Dogs are neither hostile nor overly friendly and jumping up on me. However, it has offended a lot of dog owners who think their dog should be praised and petted by anyone who meets it. (edit: to be fair, many dog owners are hoping to socialize their pups to remain calm around strangers, and they are happy for their dogs *not* to be fussed over by random passers-by) Please excuse the long comment but hopefully this will help someone who is afraid of dogs
