Yes, Stonemojo1, I've said it many times. Sagan may have had no interest, and there may have been characteristics he lacked for such a role (though none come to me at the moment), but his combination of vision, compassion, intelligence, knowledge, and articulation is both critically important for a good leader and shamefully lacking. In my 60-some trips around the sun, I've known very few people, percentage-wise, who possessed that combination, and frightfully many whose traits were nearly opposite. Sagan and Donald Trump,🤮 for example, are at _opposite ends_ of a spectrum of human leadership qualities, and I hated even citing the two together in the same sentence. Anyone who could see anything competent or leadership worthy in the latter🤦 could not possibly have voted for Carl Sagan. They were far too ignorant or deluded to realize he was precisely what America and the world needed to thrive.

but analogies are failures in logical transference. nuclear weapons aren’t matches the world isn’t a gasoline soaked room. it’s of paramount military necessity to have best and latest military technology, having a weapon doesn’t mean you have to use it for violence. the possession (effective) weapons are a two fold defensive strategy. if your enemy knows(thinks) the massive extent to your destructive capabilities they are dissuaded from attacking you, or to actually have the destructive capabilities to counter attack. i’m willing to bet the the numbers of nuclear warheads either superpower possessed were probably exaggerated to make either country seem that much more indomitable, as a military tactic.

@@mikedaugherty5501 While it's true that nuclear weapons aren’t matches and the world isn’t a gasoline-soaked room, the analogy seems highly appropriate to me. I'm well aware of the deterrence factor you mentioned. But it assumes that "the enemy" is sane and behaving rationally -- specifically to preserve his own life. We both know that does not describe all the world's leaders, and _specifically_ fails to describe the most aggressive & authoritative among them. Nor does having the "best and latest military technology" mean it has to have the power to indiscriminately kill millions of people who had nothing to do with getting their country into its leader's insane fight. On top of all that, accidents could potentially happen, only one of which might be necessary to set off this nightmarish chain reaction Sagan alludes to in this short clip. Finally, even if you're correct about an exaggeration of the number of nuclear warheads (and you offer no explanation for that), what does it matter if only a tenth of those numbers would be enough to kill half the human population on Earth, billions of other organisms, and a large percentage of the infrastructure it has taken centuries to build?

Unfortunately not really this is the same conversation humanity has been having roughly since the Invention the sword you don't Hunt with a sword it's not a tool it's a weapon it's now on mythical weapon has been for a a few millennium but the point is the first swords and modern nuclear weapons are part of the same conversation . we probably had toughened leather before the Invention of the sword as a response to people using hunting implements in war the arms race against defence I will probably go on for into the future as it stretches into the for distant past one human killing another human with a tool designed for hunting non-human mammals nobody knows who did it first mythologies sometimes eulogise the moment and it's sometimes celebrated murder is the darker side of humanity much like the Dark Side of the Moon it's probably best to wear a nice warm jacket if I lived in America I would regularly dress in Kevlar they are crazy. What interests me these days is defensive measures ways to get around these nuclear disasters in the future some crazy conceptual stuff could be possible the battle between defence and offence probably isn't going anywhere because some guy says a nice speech because there's been so much of that some of which actually predate the Invention of the sword. people have been stabbing and shooting each other on the regular since the Stone Age judging by archaeology and mythology around about the time we all started living together suddenly mythology is very concerned with the act of murder it's quite fascinating really the interplay between violence and humanity not quite as beautiful as a lion chasing down a dear what not but Society is still stuck in the same situation dark twisted unnatural harrowing version all the same pretty popular in Media. Nuclear proliferation and this point seems like a miracle I think if we pulled it off we may have to consider the immensity of what it would mean to turn the progress of violence around I'm not easily impressed that would do it. We're all to dumb or to sick we brought the sun to Earth a little more scary then 3 feet of Bronze forged and sharpened to us conversations the same.

In California you can only work 12 hrs. Yes that's socialism. In America we have choices. The government doesn't allow us to have choices. It's not a government right to give us choices. We are born under God, he gives us freewill. If you need to be forced to do what is correct for you to do, without infringing on someone else's rights and freedoms. You are the problem.

@@Behemoth_Rogue humans are the gasoline. That "solution" would require radical population control while simultaneously spreading out the remaining population in such a way it renders the destruction of nuclear weapons ineffective. I don't think Sagan truly understood the flaws in his analogy.

And the estimated lives those two bombs saved are astronomical compared to the lives that were lost by the bombs. Cause it stopped the war. Some say it would have gone on for 2 or 5 more years.
