Limnocharis flava is an aquatic plant native to Brazil and other Latin American countries. This plant may be known in Brazil as kale d'água and gulf; in other American countries as water hyacinth, junquillo, malanga de río; in English-speaking countries as yellow velvetleaf, sawah flower rush, sawah lettuce; and in some Asian countries as genjer.
The Limnocharis flava plant has the benefit of purifying water, it has phytoremediation potential to eliminate part of the pollution from aquatic environments, including heavy metals. Another benefit of this plant is that it serves as a food plant and has many nutrients. Its leaves, stems and flower buds can be consumed sautéed and cooked, but the plant should only be consumed if it is in an aquatic environment free from contamination.
