I also love hearing the "foomp!" sound as the JT8D lights off. Brings back memories of my old ramp days. I can recall one day I didn't get to hear it. Was walking a flight out during pushback, and while the engine wound up it then stopped and a cloud of fuel vapor came out the tail end of the engine and blew towards me. (A "wet" start). As the vapor cloud enveloped me I'm thinking a possible short in the David Clark headset it going to light *me* off (I was new), and that's when I learned the truth about Jet-A...

this is technically the oldest passenger commercial aircraft still in service and knowing its in nolinors hands gives me a good feeling it will age on to more than 50 years old!

Very close to being the oldest passenger commercial aircraft! Correct me if I'm wrong, but a Transair Hawaii 737-200C (N326TR) is just about two/three months older than this aircraft of the same type. All 737-200s (you can also say all 737s) older then N326TR that remain operational to this day are owned and operated by the military air forces of both India and Peru.

Air New Zealand had -200s. I miss the sound of their JT8Ds, esp the thrust reverse on landing. Sadly there are no more 737 passenger planes flying in New Zealand apart from freighters as the -300s were replaced with Airbus A320 and A320 neos.

See also the probes extending from the bottom of the turbine engines. Those are also critical components of gravel kitted 737-200s.
