[Note: Apologies for all the background noise. It was a busy day on roads and nearby properties the day this long hooting fest was going on]
Heard them before I saw them. Followed the hoots to their origin coming from a nearby oak tree. Was able to get a lot of the Great Horned Owl located on the lower branches; its mate was hooting from a higher branch and captured in the last 1:44 of the video.
From my reading on owls and this time of year, it seems paired owls are reestablishing their bond and reaffirming their territory with their long hooting sessions. (If listening closely, other pairs of owls can be heard hooting off in the distance) This particular pair I recorded were hooting in that tree from about 5-11am and 3-7pm on that particular day.
Please let me know if you have different or additional information about Great Horned Owl hoots during mid-autumn. Thanks for watching!
