This video is comprised of actual reasons behind why people were admitted to the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum between the years of 1864 and 1889. The Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum itself, which was located in Weston, West Virginia, operated from 1864 all the way up until 1994. It would ultimately be renamed the Weston State Hospital and, at its peak in the 1950s, housed 2,600 patients in badly overcrowded and severely run down and squalid conditions.
Some of these grounds for commitment will be expected, some will be sad, and a few may appear outwardly humorous…but they will all work together ward helping us better understand the history of mental illness and the mentally ill on a collective basis. And it should also be noted that, during the time period covered by this video, people being committed to insane asylums (which would ultimately come to be known as “state hospitals” beginning in the early 1900s) faced an average of 20 years being confined to these facilities, with many ending up spending the rest of their lives imprisoned within them.
And understand this. While this video will no doubt help reveal how far our society has come in terms of its understanding and treatment of the mentally ill, in today’s world and within our country, we still have every bit as far (if not more) to still go in our understanding and treatment of the mentally ill. So, we cannot afford to watch this video, sit back, and feel proud of “how far we’ve come.” No, as you watch this video, understand that we today still remain on the exact same journey as our forefathers and ancestors and that we dare not allow ourselves to become apathetically complacent within it. Tomorrow will only become better if we continue to dedicate ourselves toward traveling the journey that was begun yesterday and that still continues today.
