This is exactly the type of "filler episode" to give us the much needed expansion of little joel's character. Chess always reminds me of my dad. He was pretty into chess, and when I was a kid, starting around five, he would sit me down and play chess with me every day. He had decided I was going to be a child chess prodigy, so when I started moving randomly because I was five, I didn’t understand chess, and I was super bored, he would inevitably get angry and start making snide comments. Anyway, I didn’t turn into a child chess prodigy.

i think i like your chess videos so much because i’ve been stuck at 600 for the longest time. sometimes it feels like i’ll just never be good at the game, but your videos prove me that even 1000+ players are still human. you make a higher rating seem so much more achievable… other chess youtubers just make me feel hopelessly dumb.
@TP3200

Same here. I play daily games and sometimes when I think carefully and calculate every move, I win and the engine says I played like a 1500. But then I’m afraid I need to condense that level of calculated play down to 10-15 minutes for rapid games and I get discouraged. But seeing Joel hang a pawn early on and still get himself into a winning spot later is making me realize that repetition and gradual improvement will be more important in the long run then me trying so hard to calculate the best possible moves (which can lead me to tunnel vision into blunders more often anyway).
